Yeah it’s got a traight up comedy concept (guy who’s awful at revenge tries to take revenge) but mostly plays it straight. Kinda like Ad Astra.

I could buy a lot of his foibles and cockups in a more serious picture, they feel very real to me. It’s the looney toons racist killer family with guns strapped to their chaise lounge that sends it over the top.

I'm legitimately only on here to talk about movies and board games and books so finding out there's some weird struggle with nazis happening elsewhere has made this a pretty crazy month, and it keeps getting weirder and stupider apparently.

Same. It’s kind of funny that I grew up to have a major political dimension in my life and to be involved in local political organizing, because I sort of dread talking about politics and I never had any interest in online communities related to debate or philosophy etc when I was in my formative years. I just view working against capitalism as a responsibility for life as an ethical adult and something I simply have to do even if I’d rather be doing basically anything else.

Lmao, I’ve always wondered if the rest of the movie is that psycho.

Know what was decidedly not psycho enough? Cats. It was definitely the product of a soft-boiled brain, and there’s plenty to gawk at and be bewildered by for sure, but when it comes to like, an enjoyable spectacle, there’s very little there. It occupies the losing position of falling short of the Moulin Rouge type glitz and fire I’d expect from a cinematic adaptation, but it isn’t a straight reproduction of the original, either. It’s just kind of plodding and, despite looking technically fairly good, always sort of cheap looking. The songs aren’t catchy or arresting, either, they’re just sort of there, even though they take up most of the runtime.

Pretty rotten to insinuate that I’m virtue signaling for greatly enjoying a movie with a black director and cast.

Us is a phenomenal movie with resonant imagery, a sharp sense of humor, an incredible soundtrack, and engaging politics. The script might have some minor issues, but the problem of plausibility that many seemed to have did not concern me in the least.

If you’re subscribing to plain-jane Crunchyroll, there’s no reason not to be using VRV. I’m really looking forward to getting a new computer built so I’ll have a means of watching the Criterion streaming service.

I can't think of any jobs where you won't be answering a phone. That said, you can mitigate your phone use depending on the job. Do what I did. Leave a clerical job for social work! I don't get paid much, but it's the most fulfilling job I've had. Plus I get to spend most of my day driving around the greater Phoenix area.

Three more months until I finish up my masters program. Just three more months.

I’m exaggerating a little. The truth is, talking on the phone is one of the things I find least pleasant in life. I don’t want to get too explicit about what I do for work, but I started in a call center and clawed my way up to a professional administrative position. However, staffing crises and an unwillingness to increase payroll for the call center has meant that I get busted back down to working there several days a week. I want to work somewhere that isn’t a call center, using the skills I’ve gained in that environment.

Real talk though I am looking to get out of my job. I have a fair amount of experience working with common business software, handling high-level paperwork (as in, stuff that has immediate legal or large financial implications,) and using lateral thinking/creative problem solving/multi-tasking all the stuff people look for. But figuring out how and where I can apply my skills to move to other industries and positions is something I’m less certain about. Are there like, career counseling services for people in a position like that?

I know I’m being exploited and underpaid here. I just need to know where to look elsewhere.

If there isn’t one already, it’s probably coming, since they released a dub of the three latest movies, too. I didn’t wait for the dub but I agree that the English cast does a great job. It’s just sad that Zenigata’s English actor passed away, his unique voice was missed in part 4.

Of the things to dislike about Wes Anderson, I can't really imagine it being the aesthetic. His movies always look great, they production design, costuming, staging, make-up and cinematography is always great.

Now, if we're talking about how the emotional core of many of his films feel aloof and don't really echo the struggles of the character, I am more prone to agree.

On the contrary, Anderson’s immaculate cinematography and cynical obsession with kitsch, while often visually appealing, are a key component of his repulsively bourgeois filmmaking.

Yeah you kind of hit the nail on the head. As much as I love Grand Budapest it's hard to ignore the fetishization of wealth and class. And speaking of fetishization, the guy seems to have a... peculiar fixation on childhood.

Not only with depictions of the rich, but depictions of poverty are given a gauzy, fairy-tale treatment that makes it seem like a romantic adventure.

Seent Uncut Gems last night. A technically good movie with a kickass soundtrack but also the movie sucks and it's unpleasant to sit through, and goes on like 35 minutes too long. The worst bit was his crying scene. I was kind of sarcastically remarked that he was going to have a crying/breakdown scene if he was serious about trying to get an award nomination. There is such a scene, but it's so bad folks were actually laughing at it in the theatre. He was pretty good at playing an insufferable douche who you wish bad things to happen to him, but good lord, I can't imagine why they'd let that cut of the scene in the movie. Did they only try it once and just rolled with it or were the other takes somehow even more laughable?

People were laughing at the scene because it’s masterfully written humor.
