I’m pretty sure if someone’s abusive the goal should be to stop it not try and destroy their life in every way you can think of

While in this case I definitely think the OP could easily have been more careful, tactful and still been able to warn people about her ex, the dilemma behind it isn't a new one.

This has been hotly debated for years, at least in the UK after Peter Tatchell as the spokes person for 'OUTRAGE!' in the late 90s started outing closeted politicians who backed anti gay legislation. It caused a massive rift in the LGBT rights movements and lead to a splinter group called "F*ggts Rooting Out Closeted Sexuality" (FROCS) who supported the tactic fully (but then later claimed it was a hoax). One of their targets was an MP called James Kilfedder who died of a heart attack on the same day his outing was due to take place in the press.

While not the same as outing a trans person, outing a gay person in the 90s definitely had serious and dangerous consequences and its a moral mindfield especially as its hard to question the massive leaps forward groups like outrage were able to make for LGBT rights in the late 90s and early 00s with these tactics.

Most of this is due to old laws that just have never changed. In the UK we recently updated ours for the first time in 50 years because of a famous case similar to this that caught the media's attention.
