His actions at the time I think are fine. He was already by the car trying to get his wife back inside when the passenger threatened violence, he responded to this with violence. Maybe not the wisest decision but human. And its clear he was right to not let her go and that this friend is a lovely friend. But his actions afterwards however show some deep paranoia towards his wife that I think are concerning.
