i liked that the show explored the cultures of its space-peoples and never showed any of them using fiction for entertainment. there were religious stories and myths and histories and maybe a teaching story here and there, but no pop-culture fiction

except for the poo poo crichton was saying all the time!!

humans were physically unimpressive and did not have the technology to do gently caress-all, but crichton kept up with everyone because he had cultural knowledge to give him context, and metaphors, and even genre tropes to process the mad cosmos around them. centuries of human storytelling were crichton’s alien superpower. it ties in with him being the social glue for the gang: humans value community just because people are :krad: and we will try to get along and entertain one another, just for the hell of it. humans in farscape are morons, but we are storytelling, play-staging, cartoon-animating morons and that is both a source of strength, and an outgrowth of our other social strengths

it was neat that lani tupu both voiced pilot and played crais

be got to play both a depressed character whose nervous system was plugged into a leviathan, AND a manic character whose nervous system was plugged into a leviathan

i just started rewatching and it's way less rough than I remember. although I didn't even give I, E.T. a fuckin chance this time round. that poo poo killed my interest in Farscape immediately as a kid.

so i guess it saved me some expensive fetishes?

misfits on a spaceship is a tragically unexplored genre but Farscape is a clear number two, with Red Dwarf a close third and Firefly a distant fourth.

Lexx is of course the best thing in any relevant category.

As something that is much better read about than actually watched today.

Though it did have its moments. And its "which English rock quarry are we visiting today?" low-budget aesthetic could be fun.

pretense is my co-pilot

i spent way too much money on the dvd set and now i dont even have a dvd player :rip:

i wish the streaming versions had the commentaries though. one principle they talked about there that a lot of shows should pay attention too is the concept of the unhappy ship. they never wanted a ship full of people who got along. there always had to be idiots and crossed wires and conflicting agendas. which is probably why they were constantly rejiggering the crew.

also the behind the scenes clips of dargo yelling at people and then they just loving fall over are the funniest poo poo (cgi tongue)

Also one of my fav Crichton bits: when he comes in acting like an important dude with a super valuable deposit and they ask what his super high roller important deposit is and he says "i have in my possession all. 11. Herbs and spices."
