I wonder if Nancy saw the meat shaped rock whilst in Taiwan.

Or ate at the toilet bowl restaurant.

if nancy only sees one rock that’s shaped like something that isn’t a rock then the meat rock is a pretty good choice. definitely better than the jade cabbage and the rock that looks like nefertiti.

if they made weed legal just for tourism purposes it’s worked pretty well, quite a few people i know have been there and judging from their instagram stories just spent the whole time going to various dispensaries

Cambodia: sihanoukville is the single sketchiest place i have ever visited, god. very unsurprised that all the taiwanese ppl who are getting human trafficked over there ended up in sihanoukville. the islands off otres are unbelievably beautiful tho. when i went there kampot was full of white guys in their 50s and 60s propping up the various bars complaining about their cambodian wives so if that’s your scene great i guess. also i have a friend who worked at a school in Phnom penh and the stories he has about his coworkers there are just something else. e.g. there was a guy who carried around a bottle of his own piss, which he would drink for “health benefits”

malaysia is somewhat underrated, the food in particular is unbelievable (penang is probably the best food destination in SEA and i’ve been everywhere bar indonesia and the philippines), but agreed that the whole country is Pedestrian Hell

it’s unusual to see it in taipei city but pretty common basically anywhere else. you guys would be horrified by vietnam. how about an adult with three children on a rusty bicycle veering about on a six-lane road with huge trucks going by doing 50-60mph?

back on topic, what's the difference between scallion pancakes and the taiwanese savory egg pancakes you get at those breakfast shops?

egg pancake (蛋餅)is like thinner and soft and chewy (usually) and always has egg i believe and scallion pancake (蔥油餅)has more flaky/crispy pastry, is thicker, and doesn’t necessarily have egg though if u get one without egg you’re definitely fuckin weird. also i think the scallion pancake is made with more oil. at least that is my understanding

buy a dill plant and just put it outside. dill absolutely LOVES taiwan weather. i bought a tiny lil plant and despite my terrible gardening skills it grew like crazy and it’s basically a small tree

edit: i should clarify, dill loves taipei weather, less sure of how it would do elsewhere

Lol i was gonna say in response to korea/japan legalising weed discussion, i don't see that happening in taiwan any time soon. they banned vaping just a couple of weeks ago and i'm always quite surprised by how anti-drug a lot of people here are, even though the people i talk to and work with are mostly young, progressive, educated etc. it's weird

edit: i had a look on shopee and all of the tobacco vape stuff is gone, but you can still buy weed vape batteries lmao

I don’t think education is going to make people from other cultures inherently see the world the way you do. I largely agree that marijuana legalization would be good, but I don’t think that a person should just expect someone to instantly agree with them about it just because they had access to higher education

it's just as odd - if not more so - that people in the west have access to lots of information about how alcohol is loving terrible for you, and yet in the uk for instance alcohol is such a huge part of life and so many people (including very educated people) drink dangerous amounts pretty much every weekend. every culture has its weirdnesses and things that don't quite make sense. i'm not judging them for it or expecting them to agree with me, but i can still think it's weird. it's ok! everyone is weird

jiufen is great and especially worth seeing if you like ghibli, it was the inspiration for the town in spirited away

however it will be absolutely full of people if you go on a saturday/sunday and IMO not really worth it if the weather is bad (which it is supposed to be after tomorrow)

Thanks for Taiwan tips. Jiufun looks cool, but I’m only in Taipei for a few days and given this is my first time I suspect I’ll be tied up completely within the city. For a longer trip, Jiufun absolutely sounds great as mining is an adjacent industry to my career

I fly over to Tokyo on Monday for a few days there too, but I know that’s a bit more planned.

close to jiufen you also have houtong where they just opened a mining museum in an old coal washing building. by 'small town Taiwan museum' standards it is extremely good - sensitively restored, lots of English, displays aren't just dry technical descriptions, 10/10 would recommend. also there are tons of cats everywhere (this is the main attraction of the town tbh)

If you only have a few days in taipei then yeah there's definitely enough to see in the city to fill your time. tamsui is nice and the sunset there is famous, but if you want a cool sunset without a 40-minute MRT ride then dadaocheng wharf is basically in the downtown area and you can also gorge yourself on fried food at ningxia night market afterwards

I had this naive thought that it'd be neat to be in something like that as long as you were decently secure, but that went away with the Zhengzhou flood.

When it started I was like "wow neat I've never seen so much rain in my life!" then when poo poo started collapsing and holes opened up in the ground around me it was not very cool.

I'm guessing an earthquake would be the same thing. Little earthquakes are probably all "hah did you feel that?" , water pouring off the top of buildings less cool.

Yeah little earthquakes are like ‘oh cool lol’, this one was more ‘am i going to die’, not great
