there is a yospos discord, and with some settings adjustments you can use stock discord client and server voice channels to do `good enough` live jamming together. theres some delay of course but its still a fun exercise

fl studio allows you to set a wallpaper as your background, and I realized i could use it to embed information that is helpful when im making music.

music theory isnt the end all be all, but its helpful to have a guide during a jam, and so I digitized "the chord wheel" into two layers, the overlay layer and the background layer, and can now generate a bg for any key I want by rotating the overlay layer to the key of interest. other info I have are keyboard shortcuts for my looper. Heres a transparent export of the chord wheel

and this is what my full background looks like

and here it is in the daw

that is slick. I love little things that help with implementing workflow like that. I just downloaded Ableton 12 and have yet to fiddle with it.

thank you, yea same here. it was such a eureka moment for me when I realized the bg image can be more than just for flair. after i set it up i realized that i've known about this kind of technique for a long time - IT depts have been doing this for years to help manage their equipment by making the desktop background have key info like ip address, computer name, etc. now i dont have to carry the physical book around with me, and I did the image editing in gimp so i dont have to worry about a file format disappearing in the future or being locked into expensive software, _and_ i can spit out a new image (or render them ahead of time) during a jam session in like less than a few seconds because the laptop running my daw also has gimp installed to edit the files.

I've been finger drumming on the pads of my controller and practicing some looping but quickly realized it was missing something. my foot. translating my kick drum foot to a third finger just isn't hitting the right spot for me. coordination wise it's not allowing me to leverage all that intuitive experience I've built up, and physically it just doesn't feel as satisfying of a release.

so i picked up one of these, and ill connect the kick assembly from my digi set to it so i can start using my foot again while finger drumming. hopefully it's not a buggy mess

update: this solution sucks, trying to get the device to work as a drum trigger receiver is offlabel. hypothetically it'd work, if the software supported it as an additional category of input type.

so it looks like my options are to get a drum module for like $165 or diy my own arduino implementation. or use the little bit of midi signal i was getting through the device (only saw it happen once and then couldn't recreate it) and use the fl studio python env to write some code to clean it up

currently reflecting on one of my guiding principles - "gently caress with the computer less, play music more"

what device are you using? i could've sworn my padkontrol had a hole on the back for a sustain pedal's mono plug in to give me a kick drum but I can't find it right now (also that might not be good enough if you're a good drummer because it was just on/off and velocity had to be added later)

btw my supersonic showed up

Super tiny mustang/jag profile neck, everythings reversed - it looks like a left handed guitar, doesn't it? lets just put a lefty jag neck on a lefty jazzmaster body and then we'll reverse the bridge pickup angle and use these right handed jazz bass pickguards up - and it loving CRANKS. the seller double boxed it with a shitload of bubble wrap and it's now hanging off my wall with zero problems. I'm really happy, I've wanted one of these for a few years.

Still clownin'

I love sessions like these. Super meditative. My go-to on the projector is usually Reboot at 0.5x speed with video filters.

Appropos of nothing, my favorite compressor settings are +6db in, -10db threshold, 0db output. It helps keep my tracks audible across all devices, and makes me feel like an Audio Engineer whenever I post about it :V

Newest experiments!

https://soundcloud.com/5plat/say-you-wont - Tried the Beyonce method of just having one vocal hook and just vamping it for an entire song. Surprisingly effective! This one also makes heavy use of the Total Scene Control pipeline for Reason I've been working on this past year.

https://soundcloud.com/5plat/it-had-to-be-2023-revisited - The drum kit on this one was made entirely from samples I got by dropping a 9mm casing I'd found at a Potbelly Sandwiches on surfaces made of different materials. Vocals are from another song I've been kicking around for a while and just endlessly remixing.

https://soundcloud.com/5plat/triple-pillow - The last version of this one was the exact same, except its mix was absolute garbage. I went back through with the new mixing/mastering knowledge I acquired this past year, and that new mix parlayed into a massive increase in play count.

https://soundcloud.com/5plat/ambience-zen-forest - Sometimes I just like making a sound that sounds chill as fuuuuuuuck. Like, chiller than you're thinking. No, keep going.

That's it for now but before I go, I wanna make sure to emphasize this dude's latest:
