with drums it can also be fruitful to, instead of using comp/distortion as an insert, to put it on a send. Just set up some absolutely brickwall compressor or a Metal Zone from Hell distortion on an aux bus and mix it in with clean. Crank the send level and use the return for the level control so you can keep the signal in the input range for the dynamics you want. Can add a lot of color and harmonics without trashing the attack of the drums themselves

Every single track I get to the mastering stage i do an aux bus compressor set to 2002 CD Mastering Levels of compression and fade it in till it adds body and interest. then the whole mix gets gentle comp and limiting.

Izotope Trash 2 is so Boss (no pun), I think everyone should have it, it's frequently on sale or included in bundles.

Share Bear you just got "crossfader dominator" playing in my head, as probably last heard by anyone ever on Thrasher: Skate and Destroy

yes yes parallel comp and saturation are my secret weapon on drums, also i have an LA-2A comp i love the sound of on drums. it's set up in my default project and dialed in to exactly the way i like it

this is how i've always seen it, "oh cool you made it fart, where's the song"

i haev a few virtual modulars and i mostly understand the concepts and i guess appreciate the freedom but if you give me a synth with a real workflow and like a mod matrix i can dial in the sounds i want much more quickly and get to composing and arranging much more quickly. idk they're just not for me. ive never been impressed when someone's like "hey check out this patch"

did it in reaper. it's easier if you render the part you want to cut up first. then you can just drag it so it's how long you want it. attacks work best since they make a good chopped up sound with their variation, or you can use a fast volume envelope. then copy it however many times, take the last one and shorten the end of it more, rinse and repeat. putting a bit of a gap before them amplifies the effect even more. i used a separate track so that it didn't have so much reverb on it

if you dig that sound and dont have any, look for "trance gate" plugins or FX, or something like stutter edit. they can vastly simplify the process for you. e.g. i'll take a step sequencer and use it to trigger a gate in a pattern and just let it run, no having to edit things meticulously
