For anyone who hasn't heard the story beyond just her name, Typhoid Mary's a really good analog to the modern anti-quarantine protesters. Even after she was identified as the carrier and informed what she was doing she wouldn't stay in. She just really loved spreading typhoid.

I remember reading about Typhoid Mary a few months ago and thinking "I can't imagine anyone being this selfish these days" and boy the last few weeks have really opened my eyes to the amount of garbage people I live with.

I read the one about the hospital ships and that's where I already bailed. Those things have been ready and active across the world for literally decades, there's no "getting them ready".

A 3 year old also asks a lot of "Why" questions and it doesn't make them smart either.

There's also some Christians who claim that Christianity isn't a religion, but a "connection to God" or something along those lines. I'm not sure what the difference is supposed to be.

It's the convenient way in which they can still label themselves as a Christian (and therefore Are Good People) without having to actually bother with pesky Christian tenets that require effort, time, or sacrifice.

Actually, while this is relevant, what's the Eco quote about the way fascists use language? Was talking about it with a mate today and couldn't find it.

Did you mean the Sartre quote about bad faith arguing?

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

Genres are fake. Sometimes you'll get a science fiction setting but the actual story is a murder mystery or a horror. A lot of science fiction is straight up westerns in space (the term "space opera" comes from "horse opera" which is, no poo poo, an old term for westerns from when they were contemporary stories). The line between fantasy and science fiction is almost nonexistent, based more along the lines of what we think is and isn't possible, but that's arbitrary and tends to change over the years anyway.

I'll accept Bladerunner as cyberpunk, or at least cyberpunk-adjacent.

As far as Cyberpunk 2077's "working with the cops," I'm never comfortable judging a storyline when I only hear it taken out of context, and since the game is a buggy mess that's been taken off the market I'm unlikely to be able to play it myself. Maybe I should find a let's play.

I don't know what mission that poster was referring to, there's no main line mission(s) where you're forced to work with cops. You can do optional side gigs by tracking police scanner jobs where cops pay you (you are a merc after all), but nothing mandatory as far as Ive seen.

I saw a blistering takedown of Cyberpunk 2077 by a Japanese person who is fluent in both Japanese and English. A lot of the stuff presented as weird and alien is just normal Japanese culture; he called out a particular dish (a non-ramen noodle bowl? I forget, sorry) that the viewpoint character thinks of as bizarre but is just daily food in Japan. It's Orientalist (not surprising from a Western studio) as gently caress.

Do you have a link to that takedown?

Netflix is more like "We have a ton of shows for you! 2 have the subs in your language, 1 only has them in English, 1 only has Japanese captions and the others only have French subtitles". I dont know if thats just more region licensing fuckery or just Netflix being stupid about which subs to allow in multilingual countries, but its really annoying to find a show you like and then the only subs available are of no use to you.

I don't understand why the choice has to be "company can take money out of your bank" or "1960s paper checks". Can you not just wire money from your own account to your landlord/utilities manually?

Why would I do either of those when I can just tell the bank “pay this much every month”.

It’s not “letting the company take money out of your bank”, it’s “giving your bank instructions to send money to the company”.

That sounds like a recurring wire transfer, rather than a direct debit ? According to what I can find DD does in fact authorise the company to initiate a transfer:

https://gocardless.com/en-us/guides/intro-to-direct-debit/guide-for-payers/ posted:

A Direct Debit authorizes someone to collect payments from your account when they are due - for example, an accountant collecting a regular fee from you, or even Netflix collecting your monthly subscription.
You give this authorization by completing a Direct Debit mandate form - also known as an ACH authorization form in the US. This can be a paper form or a web page that you complete online.

Once you authorize a company, they can automatically take payments from you (provided that they comply with certain rules).

Platystemon posted:

The U.S. version of this is that you go to your bank’s website and fill in a form.

The bank will print and mail a check to the entity you named, in the amount you named, at the address you named.

The recipient deposits it with their bank, often instantly via scanning the check, but potentially taking it physically to the bank.
