yeah, of course. iirc bad brains were co-headlining a show with discharge and spit on them during their set.

but bad brains weren't good people in general; they once stayed at the big boy's house during a tour, and in the morning big boys came back to find bad brains already having left but not before trashing their place and writing "bloodclot" on their bathroom mirror.

lol I never really liked Discharge so I wasn't aware of any of this. I don't know how it could happen for a loving punk band to be so technically bad that they get booed. Were they literally holding their instruments upside down instead of just figuratively?

I saw American Hardcore a while ago and the lead singer of Bad Brains clearly has a mental illness of some sort. It's kind of weird, since in terms of musical proficiency they blew everyone else out of the water. They could make any early hardcore band look bad, let alone Discharge.

lol its even worse. discharge at their height were clearly just winging it most of the time, demonstrating a lack of understanding of the structures of their own songs live. but grave new world saw them go full hair metal, so it wasn't a question of them being technically inept at that point, but more that it was just awful. The new music, the new aesthetic, the refusal to play early stuff, they really just poo poo the bed in the most complete way conceivable for the pioneers of d-beat. discharge were never musically adept, but that's not what makes them appealing - if you want that, then anti-cimex is the answer.

HR clearly has a mental illness, but they were all very rasta at the time, and between that and the sketchy beginnings of the nyhc scene homophobia was very common and embraced. john joseph from cro-mags formed a band bad brains + roadies called "bloodclot" that would sometimes open up local shows. those guys all dance around it, but if you want proof its pretty much everywhere when you read between the lines, or just read cro-mags lyrics. hell, raybeez was in a skinhead band before warzone and had a song called "bashing", and dedicated it to harley flanagan and their group of friends who would go out bashing - but no surprise there, harley was (and still is!) an avid skrewdriver fan. raybeez on the other hand went on to become a pretty hardcore krishna and positive force in the scene, a real turnaround for a guy who did home invasions on puerto rican immigrants.

the real deal on bad brains' musical proficiency is that they were a real and accomplished reggae band; but one day they all saw Ramones play and decided to just go for it. Their eventual sound was just the result of playing faster and faster, but most of those songs that appear on Rock For Light had been workshopped since 78-79.

It absolutely is not 'exclusively for Nazis' even today (I'm pretty sure both SHARPs and trads have actually had a major resurgence since the nineties, mostly thanks to the Internet), but the public perception which you exemplify quite accurately in your post is why you won't see me walking around dressed as a skinhead. You can see how it's a self-perpetuating thing, aesthetically.

99% of the public knows jack poo poo about the history of ska, punk, and skinheads. They're not going to be able to interpret your color-coded laces. All they see is a skinhead (=bad).

i'd argue that nazi skins aren't as prevelant these days explicitly because of orgs like SHARP. You don't see so many boneheads these days as you see proud boys.

and yeah, the laces thing was very scene specific, if was ever actually a thing. some scenes the red meant commie, in others it meant like, idk blood of your enemies or some wack poo poo.

Apparently they released a demo in 1981 or 1982, but I've never been able to find a copy.

You must be the punk brother I unfortunately never had, I went on a French punk YouTube bender a year or two ago, and those are some of the bands that came up. Komintern Sect I already knew, but the other two were solid discoveries. Here's some more:

Les Collabos:

Kochise (if I know you, which I don't, these guys will be right up your alley):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZwvMd5jbqI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQLgTZgWbF4

They have more good stuff but there aren't a lot of individual songs on YT. Most of their albums are on there, though.

Haine Brigade:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHwDYf9qUC4

^ This is a really cool song, I don't even know what to call this sub-subgenre of wistful long-form Oi!, Camera Silens has songs like that as well.

Warrior Kids are one of my favorite French punk bands. It's just three nobody eighties kids from the garbage-ridden city of Marseille coming up with their own awesome take on Oi!, it's...good-natured and melancholic somehow. Don't let the audio quality fool you, these guys could play (although the singer couldn't sing):
