one thing i would suggest is that since not having a map in areas can be punishing, listen for the sound of someone humming. he will give you the option to buying the maps for various areas so you can fill them in. that will really help when you want to bounce back and forth between areas until you get a feel for it.

all of this is real good to know, thanks, also just bought hollow knight on a friends kid's reocmmendation when seeing it was 50% off on steam, i get the feeling a thirteen-year-old might have a lot more patience for grind-y combat

i am very much not a fan of dark souls and also bounced off of a sci-fi souls like game (hellpoint) so we will see how much i like this

which way to the MACHINES?
Dark Souls is such a weird thing because there's no way to describe how it works other than there's a point where it clicks. I played DS1 for maybe 15 hours the first time and absolutely bounced off of it. I picked it up again months later because something made me think it was worth another shot, and was absolutely hooked. Something changed where it clicked.

Hollow Knight doesn't seem as gruelling as the early Dark Souls sections but ymmv. The way it leans on Metroid tropes sort of makes it feel more forgiving to me at least, like having an effective map and obvious interconnections between areas.

Cyberpunk 2077 is on sale for 30 bucks so I picked it up and am enjoying it. The setting is cool and it feels like a very large game. So far the plot has been guns boobs guns cars sex hookers boobs sex guns porn Keanu Reeves sexy ladies Japan sex hookers porn guns.

Gameplay is fine. Guns are kind of meh. I set it to hard difficulty and haven't had any trouble and have like 50 medkits stacked up in my inventory after playing it for a day. Mostly I've been playing it the same way I play Deus Ex, sneaking around frying people's eye implants and knocking them out. I am looking forward to getting the monomolecular wire.

A year of patches must have made a big difference, because I haven't encountered any major bugs. A few brief graphics glitches and one reoccurring kind of funny bug where I walk into a room and a random physics object rockets off in some direction.

Looks real pretty too. With a 3070 and a mix of high and ultra I can get about 45 fps with raytracing on, or 70 with it off. I've mostly left it off cause it doesn't make an enormous difference to the look, though sometimes I will turn it on in a place where they were clearly trying to show it off and it's worth it.

The dialogue was clearly written by people for whom English is a second language. It's not bad at all, and vastly better than say a Bethesda game, but the characters do sometimes have a tinge of the Family Guy European dudes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnUv2fhFy5E

Also I guess all the people buying the game on sale now are enjoying it and starting to counteract the mass of negative neckbeard reviews from last year, which has made one of the devs really happy in a cute way:

that's been my experience and i bought it after the epilepsy patch shortly after release. it's less janky the better the system, so it was abysmal on a last gen, fine on a new pc, and wonky everywhere in-between

Yeah that was the issue for me. I wanted deus ex in the cyberpunk 2021 universe but instead got GTA in the cyberpunk 2021 universe. I really do think the ability to drive around a huge city, run people over without consequence, etc, makes the game feel shallow. Like no game treats fighting and death with the gravity it deserves but its next level when you can drive across town, run 10 people over, blast 5 people with bounty stars walking to the objective and then try and have a conversation.

I'd much rather have had less (but more detailed) environments, characters, everything than a million variations on the same dumb pedestrian NPC that I remember them bragging about at one point

there is a sequence in cyberpunk where you the detective guy is driving you into the trailer park where his family lives and when I played he ran over an NPC. obviously a bug but I went back and retried it and it happened again. pretty funny

yeah it really makes the world feel disposable, it reminds me of a sequence in GTA 4 where your talking to your cousin or whatever and you're saying that you're trying to be a better person, etc, and I'm having that talk while in a car, driving down the sidewalk, killing probably 20 people. I've been in the mood for a CRPG btw so I tried out Pathfinder WOTR but ended up giving that up, the story seems generic and the writing isn't great. Plus the crusade aspect is a super watered down heros of might and magic type game that I really wasn't into.

I picked up Pillars of Eternity a couple of days ago and have been enjoying that, playing a heart breaker aristocratic rogue

I picked up Pathfinder Kingmaker over the steam sale, and have just been playing a mix of older games. I've liked Wasteland 3 (outside of the combat), Disco Elysium, and Divinity Original Sin 2 (the first area is awful though, so you will need to bare through that).

I heard about the pathfinder series from Mandalore's kingmaker review, and it looked pretty cool. I should have just gotten that, but I'm not a fan of clumsy combat feel that's inherit to the "real time with pause but also turn based if you want". Since real time with pause follows the turnbased system very closely, you'll often give commands to characters and then wait 5-6 seconds because it wasn't their turn, this is especially grating when combat starts and you issue a command to someone with the lowest initiative.

The 50 or so classes Pathfinder seems to have was also pretty overwhelming. I appreciate Pillars of Eternity's dumbed down D&D type system, with just 8 or so classes and some nice twists on the D&D versions of things (rogues are sneaky glass cannons, instead of primarily utility classes like in D&D/Pathfinder, for example). I also find the visual style nostalgic, reminds me of playing baulder's gate in 1999 or so and barely understanding anything that was going on, just making min/max characters, etc.

I've heard PoE II is good too which I'll probably check out after I finish the first game.

Yeah, basically they focused on the part of the game I cared about the least: a big game world to barely pay attention to as you drive your car around in it.

I mean, I put about 50 hours into it, the main story was surprisingly good, but I won't be replaying it.

in GTA V, when you reunite Michael's family, the conversation starts off with "trying to be a better person" but completely changes to "WTF, you maniac?!" if you start running over people.
