And if this were, like, 8 years ago, he may be able to pull them off both due to cultural context and senility. For example, a decade ago the Corn Pop story would have been kinda neat if he told it well. I bet he told it all the time, and everyone thought he was just a man of the people. I fear Trump is going to win this first debate. His entire campaign is on the line, any October surprises are likely to target him, and unlike in 2016, winning is not optional. He doesn't have a resource advantage anymore, and this first debate is going to be his best chance at clawing his way back into the race. Trump is going to lie 100 times a minute, toss in the Tara Reade stuff, and Biden is going to get flustered and visibly irritable, trying to interject during Trump's time on the clock, leading all the pundits to marvel at Trump's success in getting under Biden's skin. Even if the debate descends into a complete mess, that is a win for Trump. Biden needs to come be able to quickly dismiss Trump's nonsense, and launch into an attack on him at every opportunity rather than playing defense against a shower of poo poo. Trump is terrible when he has to defend his record, and if Biden can stay on the front foot, he is halfway home. The next debate is 16 days away. Trump is not going to be able to wash away the stench of a defeat for half of the remaining days of the campaign, all the while votes are being locked in as people go and vote early or return their mail in ballots.
