Any more trip reports from Brew Barons? Thinking of picking it up this weekend. Worth getting now? Not worth it til more features are built out? How's the flying?

i've been enjoying it, it's essentially a few minigames put together (flying/harvesting/exploring, brewing, outfitting your bar), similar to dave the diver

the flying is very arcade-y but it's fun and feels good on a controller... i think some review described it as "like pilotwings" and that seems about right. you of course can customize and upgrade your plane with the resources and money you collect etc etc etc

i appreciate that it's something i can pick up and mess around with for a few minutes or more vs needing to block out time to get into msfs

I'm enjoying it so far, but it seems that the brewery aspect is a much bigger part of the game than flying. I haven't gotten far enough for any combat though, so that balance might change later on. Flying mechanics are definitely on the arcadey side of things, but it's pretty fun. I don't regret picking it up.

I've been enjoying Brew Barons so far as well. There are a few things about the gameplay aspect that aren't very clearly explained but the steam forums seem to be catching up and you kind find answers to most questions now. The devs seem to putting out quick patches every day to address issues as they come up, which is good.

Flying is definitely very arcade-y, but works really well with a controller - there is absolutely no need for HOTAS for this game, and in fact I imagine it might actually be a worse experience. I would definitely re-buy this if it comes out on console, just to chill on the couch and play it.

Yeah, I don't care that much about the voices sounding totally human. The real killer feature is ATC that makes the right calls at the right times and responds correctly to what you say. Give me that and I'd be fine if the sound came from a fuckin MacinTalk TTS.

Honestly I see tremendous value in an AI-powered ATC that can deal with contextual information. Mentioned it somewhere else but I rarely fly into controlled airspace IRL so there's a real chance you'll hear me go "uuuuh say again slow what sorry". Having an AI that can react humanlike and realistic would be really really good.

The fact alone that these voices have the same accents (mostly Germany dutch, french) that I hear on the radio is strangely powerful.

What I am wondering is how much realistic procedures you can expect. Will the AI be able to read through the published procedures and vector me to the correct reporting points? Will they have templates for flight information services? Can you feed it information to use? That sort of thing.

I wish this type of faux retro games would do a more Zarch/Virus style landscape instead of the "flat plane with pyramids." You could adhere to the retro style, but add something that was impossible 35 years ago. But Thunder Helix looks fun nonetheless.

MSFS SU15 is delayed until sometime in April. That's really unlike Asobo, historically when an announced release day rolls around they shove whatever they've got out the door no matter what's still wrong with it. Hopefully a good sign for the future.

Asobo does seem to be learning from their mistakes with MSFS, and since these SU's are also being used as a guinea pig for some FS2024 stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if Asobo is taking a chance to get stuff tweaked now to reduce how broken Fs2024 will be at launch.

I wonder if this has anything to do with this inibuilds neo situation. The stolen a32nx project code got ripped out but the replacement fms and fbw law implementation seems to have some issues.

I'd be happy with the a32nx neo but its fms cannot do go around guidance or final app and those are both rather important features. The v2 fms will supposedly implement them but it has been in development hell for something like two years and the sole developer on that side of things seems more interested in playing with the a380 anyway.

If you're not on the Beyond ATC discord, they have a poll up looking for input. They say that they're basically done with the IFR experience and could release a solo IFR product very soon. They still need 3-4 months to properly finish and test the traffic injection part of the program. So the poll is asking if they should release the solo IFR component now, at full price, and then release traffic injection (and VFR later) as a free update in 3-4 months or hold off and release IFR and traffic injection together when it's ready.

Same, the atc is great but honestly after many years I have so many add ons that do ore-files atc really well. The traffic injection stuff, that’s great. I remember in the waning days of FSX a solo dev started tinkering in that direction but stopped after a proof of concept.

But most of the activity nowadays is on Discord.

AIR GOON RECRUITMENT

First type of event:

quote:

The Long Afternoon War, a dynamic, player commanded war that combined DCS, Arma 3, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Command: Modern Operations into one game! It is mainly played in DCS. Played every Saturday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhAwpb5XYOQ

So wots all this then?

DCS World is a flight sim with modules, individually purchased planes that simulate various helicopters and fixed wing aircraft of mostly the modern era. The game includes non-flyable AI assets, and tons of ground units of all kinds. Game requires a lot of patience, as these airplanes are started manually with each system modeled, and the nerds that fly them click the buttons in the cockpit to achieve what they need to do. The sim is good enough to be used by real air forces for training for planes, such as the US Air National Guard for the A-10, and the French Air Force for the Mirage 2000. Our players will talk on the radio channels with air traffic control and air battle management, and they will use different channels to communicate with their wingmen. Each flight will have its own objectives as part of the package, and the flight leads will write up their plan before game day, and after the game, their after action report. Each days’ game will probably last about 1.5 hours to 2 hours. We’ll stream it both from the perspective of a pilot, and from the air battle manager station’s radar screen.

Does it sound complex? Oh gently caress yeah, it is! But it’s a lot of fun. We hope to attract the interest of non-plane goons and are more than happy to explain terms and describe what we do. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, and we look forward to sharing nerdery in this thread or the Discord.

SECOND EVENT

MERCENARY CAMPAIGN, Brownwater Corporation.

quote:

Ludicrous plot lines, lots of free planes, crazy stuff, insane plot, and even more. Played mostly on Sunday in DCS. Very newbie friendly!

An example mission guidance from a few weeks ago:

"Once we start bombing the vatican, the adrenochrome festival will be effectively disrupted, and the cyberPope should come down off of his throne and start tearing poo poo up
5m after he's disconnected from the adrenothrone, he'll be vulnerable to mk84's and other lamer munitions
He won't pull out his superweapon unless he's threatened
We will get a vague text description of whats happening when he uses it"

THIRD EVENT:

quote:

FALCON BMS, The original, the free, the legendary. The absolute queen of F-16 simulation. Older than most, yet better in so many ways.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHQmTmq0T7c
I'm calling it "Regular BMs with Gorson" - I see no problems with that name. I will frag the missions and post them to discord ahead of time. 🫵 choose the mission and post results (if you want). Feel free to request missions, or escorts, whatever. You can also frag your own missions if you like. The idea here is to get people over the hump that is the janky-rear end BMS campaign interface and right into flying with goons.

I know we have a small handful of people who would like to play this game but if there is no interest that's ok I will likely not cry. I am tentatively going to run this on Tuesday nights Central Time USA, but am open to other days and times.

Scenario:

In this timeline Khomeini was installed as a religious figure in 1979 thus avoiding the revolution. Iraq continued their military build-up through the 80's. The US, fearful of a Iraqi strangehold on the region, supported the Shah and provided Iran with modern planes and equipment. In the meantime Khomeini worked behind the scenes to consolidate power and undermine the Shah's rule. Calls for reform and increased representation by religious figures were ignored; riots exploded across Iran in 1991 (organized and supported by Khomeini) and in 1992 the Shah was overthrown and Khomeini put in place as supreme leader. The US immediately pulled support and cancelled all contracts with Iran, retreating to their Saudi allies and consolidating power there.

Iraq, sensing that both Iran and the US were on their heels, launches a full invasion of Iran on Sept 5, 1992. The Gulf War has begun.

Don't know what BMS is, why you should play, what makes it better (and worse) than DCS, issues with setup or configuration? Just ask.

An after action report from Long AFternoon War heli ops:

Mederlock posted:

Package Lead AAR

We were tasked with escorting some grievously wounded soldiers and some VIP's out of Rio Gallegos, as with the PLA fleet just off-shore fixed wing assets weren't available to evacuate them. Our operational leads decided to send us out during twilight to reduce our visual signature, as we received intel that some disgruntled rioters may have had small arms and were willing to use them. After establishing our route and approach, we took off and flew together out to Rio Gallegos. The evening darkness came quickly, and with the cloud cover and weak moonlight, we had to engage our spotlights and NVG's to stay on track.

As we dropped our altitude and started flying over the city, we started taking small arms fire but it didn't cause any serious damage. Orca and Bandido successfully made their landings at the makeshift hospital's at 25th Rgt's base in town and loaded up all of the severely wounded soldiers successfully. Delfin also landed successfully and got the VIP's and their family's out, however the lighting was inconsistent at the LZ and gave Dragones trouble, leading to a loss of one airframe and leading to a wave-off for the rest of the flight, meaning they didn't extract any of the VIP's favoured staff.

The flight home was extremely challenging in the pitch black, and it seems the small arms damaged the nav systems in the Gazelle's. With a mix of navigator help and RWR pings from our EWR, we were able to get oriented and got our pax to FARP Sophie successfully, where they were shuttled further back on C-130's

What went well

Excellent pilotage out there last evening! Low level flying, at night, with small arms fire, with tight and poorly lit LZ's, and limited SA options, and we still managed to get on target, land, load our passengers, and get back to base successfully. Coordination between flight's was good, and we managed to work together well to get back to FARP Sophie.

Where we can improve

We need to emphasize the need for appropriate lighting for our ground crews, as both FARP Sophie and the LZ's were lacking appropriate illumination. Our spotlights must have been pretty dirty too, as only Orca's was effective enough to see clearly. The ADF beacons all seem to have been targeted by PLA EWAR, as we couldn't get a fix on them for the whole mission.

Is there anyone still using CH products? I'm having a hard time having them working on my pc, Win11 updated and all checked. Drivers are from 2006 so I mean... thanks CH for the effort of not giving a gently caress so hard for almost 2 decades. That being said device manager recognizes them, it says they're working good but if I open the CtrlMgr app and try to calibrate them the app freezes (not the pc, just the app). MSFS doesn't see them at all.

Another concern I have is that they made me disable the 'core isolation/memory integrity' feature, and if I have them plugged in during at boot, they make me go into a reboot loop for some unspecified reason. So, I need to unplug them, boot up, then plug them in, but yet they won't work in MSFS.

I'm clueless also because I used them in the past and IIRC it was already on Win11 so wtf is going on?
