That’s a Krayt Dragon according to wookipedia. I’m ok with them upgrading it to a giant sand worm.

Here’s the old entry, looks like they’re already cleaning up the new entry with Mando lore.

I like the new version of the dragon - it feels more coherent with the skeleton in ANH than the other versions in Legends.

Them not using the same model and texture for it from KOTOR1 is a huge misstep.

For the record, I would be one million percent okay if the Fett cameo at the end of the episode was absolutely just that, and we never saw him again, but I understand that no writer alive has the restraint needed to not follow up on that, so I'm okay with that, too.

Boba was always going to come back, there’s money to be made! I’m surprised Disney had the restraint to wait 8 years after buying the franchise instead of making him a main character in the sequel trilogy or something else dumb like that.

I'm honestly surprised he didn't turn up in Solo, the one place where he would have actually made sense showing up.

I'm really baffled by this attitude of "introducing concepts and characters that existed in the universe, in a logically consistent way with other stories in the universe, is actually a bad thing"

I slept on it and warmed up to the episode. Problem is I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre right before hand, and obviously 70's art house misery porn isn't the best lead up since I went into this with a "Subvert my nipples, daddi" mood, which obviously isn't what Star Wars is about (most of the time). I'm about Boba now.

As for the HDR, I'm not sure why Disney never does a proper HDR/Dolby Vision grade for this show. My quick fix last season was turn up the vibrance and crush the blacks in my settings by 5%, so that should do it.

I actually applaud their restraint for not using him in Solo. I always thought Han and Boba having some long standing rivalry was one of the dumber parts of the EU. Like, he was hired by the Empire to find Solo. He just happened to ALSO have a life long rivalry against the guy the Empire hired him to bring in? Seems weird.

Yeah, after a while it got to the point where someone good enough (especially if they had Legendary weapons) could drat near solo one, and only the best weaponsmiths and richest Jedi could get the best modified weapons and highest-quality pearls.

Yeah, I kinda half-heartedly expected a tongue-in-cheek 80s-quality toy commercial after this instead of the credits art.

Yeah, I try to pretend the Holiday Special doesn't exist, so I forgot about that. And I'd like to point out that it's not canon. But fair enough, the EU was just picking up something and running with it, I guess.

All the other clones would be way older than that by this point. Fett was the only clone created to age like a normal human, so he'd be the only one to be the right age now.

It's Fett.

SCIENCE

Hell yeah. Star Wars.

Very straightforward episode without a lot of surprises aside from the stinger, but it's a season opener so I'm not gonna complain. The :tunnelsnakes: (edit: what happened to the tunnelsnakes gang tag) didn't look like they did anywhere in the EU but I guess they had to canonize it eventually and they had to reconcile it with the skeleton in ANH.

That was pretty intense, huh?

Just wanna make an appreciation post for the aspect ratio opening up during the krayt battle. I had to rewind it during that part to watch it again because the transition was executed perfectly. I remember the same feeling during The Hunger Games Catching Fire when the AR transitioned to full IMAX at the part where Katniss rose up into the arena during the countdown. Are there any other movies or shows that have done the same thing? It's a pretty effective filmic technique to indicate poo poo's about to get real. Love that.

chitoryu12

I said this in the last thread and I'll say it again: not every TV show needs to be "prestige" with every episode being drama and plot twists. Not only because it's easy for that kind of show to start breaking down (because it's almost impossible to plot things out for dozens of episodes in advance and eventually you have to start getting into asspulls or repeating plots and character beats), but because that kind of show also makes it hard to just be fun. This is Star Wars, man. You get the overarching plot but you're also here to see a badass in gleaming silver armor fly around on his jetpack and shoot a bunch of people, or get into dogfights with his cool spaceship.

It's also doing a great job of fleshing out the setting in a way that you normally had to dive into EU novels or even the RPG sourcebooks to see (Sand People culture, graffiti-covered slums, actual boats). The willingness to do things that are "un-Star Wars" has made the setting as a whole much richer and feeling more organic. As someone who loves doing things like tabletop RPGs and writing fiction and really wants to do a Star Wars game (once I figure out what to do), The Mandalorian really invigorates me and makes me feel like a kid again.

Christopher Nolan famously did it for The Dark Knight for the opening bank robbery scene, and a few other scenes if I remember correctly. Pretty sure he did it in Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, too.

Grand Budapest Hotel changes aspect ratio all over the place in fun ways, changing with the decade to reflect how things were filmed at that time, but I'll never recommend people watch that movie, because the aspect ratio changes are the only things I liked about it. But I do mean it does it well, focusing on the vertical more for less wide ratios. Still though, ugh that movie.
