Tonight's Super J Cup is easily the biggest show New Japan's run in the us since covid and also the one that has the most implications to the main product. Like every Super J Cup, it's a single elimination tournament and despite obv resrestictions they've rounded up a good field of eight North American juniors from several different mid major and indie promotions. Chris Bey's inclusion here is particularly notable as I believe it's the first official and friendly mention of Impact since the relationship broke off after Okada's infamous excursion and the Bushiroad takeover. Winner gets not only a cool gold jacket but a match against Hiromu Takahashi in the Tokyo Dome on 1.4. The winner of that match will presumably get a title shot against IWGP Jr. Heavyweight champion Taiji Ishimori on the second night of Wrestle Kingdom but that has not been officially stated yet. According to expats I've talked to things seem to be loosening up as far as bringing people in to the country and the company seems to have some clout in that department so this doesn't necessarily mean anyone specifically must or alternatively couldn't win. As a bonus we'll also see the debut of a new LA Dojo young lion as Kevin Knight makes his company debut in place of an injured Karl Fredericks. I liked Bey, he doesn’t hold back on his strikes. Little bit weak on his timing (I think he dropped a pin attempt too early) but that’ll come.
