Lockpicking is a fun little puzzle, but its most practical use for me so far has been to use it as a meditation on risk assessment for junior level infosec people while I teach the basics. If the lock takes extra effort to open, will that make users hate it? What does putting a visible lock on a closed door say to you? On an open door? What's the point of spending more than the cost of a trash masterlock when there's windows on the back of your house that a person can just break? What kind of attacker wants to pick a lock vs. just breaking your door down? What other problems are you likely to have if you have those kinds of enemies? If someone does defeat your initial defenses, what then? Luckily, my ADHD "hobby of the week" brain has decided that I'm done lockpicking for now. I made it to the point that I have a decent kit and can sometimes get through spool pins, which is far enough to know putting effort into getting better at single-pin-picking is going to get expensive and time consuming. Beware that "interesting" locks are expensive and heavy (expensive to ship). Also, you're now "that guy". If you don't want a hobby/new lifestyle, I'd still recommend learning how to rake a masterlock, if nothing else but your own amusement.

I also learned to lockpick during quarantine times. I can go after pin tumbler locks okay now. Have a feel for spools and serrated pins. Mostly it's just a fun puzzle requiring you to visualize the inside of something by touch alone. My favorite lockpicks so far are Dangerfield. They've been super resilient. Sparrows has some good stuff too. Their cutaway locks even make a nice desk decoration when you're not picking them. They're easy to repin if you get the kit too, but you might want a desk vise if you're going to be repinning anything.

pro starcraft loser posted:I broke my favorite pick in the master lock I have to screw with It takes a while before you can really feel the difference between a jammed pin and warding. Ease up on your tension (is the advice 90% of people gave me to start) and try to apply force farther out on the tensioner so that core movement is magnified a little more into what your finger is feeling. For masterlock No.3s the space where the pins are is surprisingly short, since there's only 4 pins. It's really easy to go past the pins and start trying to pick the metal chunks out the back of the core.

Ngl this was one of the few VHS tapes my parents owned when I was a little kid and it made me very confused and horny Anyways, the thing that always surprises me about picking locks is how easy it is. My half half brother showed me how at my sisters wedding and we broke into the county club lockers for fun. Most locks are purely for show, which is usually enough, and would never keep out an actually determined thief. My favorite lockpicking lawyer vid is the one that reveals that the gun locks which police all across the country use to secure their firearms can be defeated by simply dragging a magnet across the outside of the lock

lockpicking is this fun nerd thing that people look at you funny about, like "uhh are you a criminal", but they don't realize that criminals basically never pick locks. master padlock? yeah you can rake it but who cares, a big bolt cutter takes care of it in 2 seconds. piece of poo poo kwikset on your front door? kick the door in, or smash the nearest window. circle lock on a vending machine? smash the glass, grab the poo poo. bike lock? angle grinder. picking a lock is only necessary when you want to get access without doing any damage

anyway my point is, you might figure out that most common locks are not pick resistant, and this leads you to look into high security locks to protect your own property. but unless you're defending against lock nerds, you have the wrong threat model. replace your front door lock with some high security assa abloy poo poo? wouldn't make sense unless you also have a solid steel door, and a steel door jamb, and there are no windows to smash, etc

protip for anyone looking to make their own picks or shims. there is a tool machinists use called a "feeler gauge". its basically just a bunch of different standard strips of metal in various thickness. they are the perfect size for making tools and they are cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Hotop-Blades-Feeler-Imperial-Measuring/dp/B06XHXJG31/

Also check out ebay for lock lots. I got a couple big ones for a decent price a while back. One of them was like 30 shlage 6 pin locks and I rebuilt them into progressive training locks for a little class I taught on picking for some of my coworkers and their kids. My boss went from never touching a lockpick to opening 6 pin locks in 45 mins. That was a tad concerning. EDIT: I've mostly given up on the hobby after I basically ruined it with gear fetishization like I do every hobby. Ask me about having hundreds of dollars in ~*premium*~ lockpicks that I don't use for anything lmao

Jumping in as another (part-time) professional locksmith. Like Fanelien I'm mostly automotive but I also do some residential, mostly rekeying houses and some unlocks. I got into the industry through my father, who got into it after deciding he was over being an attorney but not yet ready to retire. I worked full-time for about 4 years and now I just do weekends. When it comes to lockpicking, at this point I just want to get things done as quickly as possible, so Lishi tools are my go-to. They've had automotive ones for years, but now they're starting to come out with residential. People look at you like you're a wizard when you use one, even though it's much easier than regular lockpicks. Happy to answer any questions.
