You need a ten foot ladder, a sawzall, an outlet tester, a copy of the Black & Decker guide to home wiring, a tack hammer, a claw hammer... hey, have you decided on which 18v battery ecosystem you're going with yet? Ryobi is the home depot one and it's fine for homeowners, lots of people swear by bosch or milwaukee, definitely don't get the black & decker ones (they make a good book about wiring but everything else they sell is garbo). You're gonna want a shop vac, maybe a power washer, a squeegee, get yourself some knee pads/pucks if you have a crawlspace, think about what sorts of shovels your yard/driveway/weather conditions call for. Got grass? Any bushes? The Fiscars shears are fine, maybe consider some loppers, hedge shears, or some of the power tool options in that arena, I'm assuming you're already thinking about the lawnmower and/or string trimmer to go with.

Welcome to home ownership, the above represents some fraction of your first two month's purchases, not a full list, but it'll get ya started.

For tools I am very much in the mindset of buy as you go, but when you do by, go big. Get a big ratchet set because it will have screwdrivers with all the tips you could need, wrenches , an allen key set and a bunch of other things you will never need until you do. For a ladder get a little giant adjustable, they are great and last forever. My oldest one has to be 25 years old now and still rocks out hard. Claw hammer. I always carry a leatherman Surge on me at all times and I use it nearly everyday. Tape measurer. 2 ft level.

Everything else is how far are you going with home improvement things. Milwaukee M12 are great light drills that I use even in contracting. M18 for everything else.

I keep looking for things to say the world is going to get better and I only find things pointing in the other direction.

quote:

Umberto Eco Makes a List of the 14 Common Features of Fascism

1. The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”

2.The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”

3.The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”

4.Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”

5.Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”

6. Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.”

7. The obsession with a plot. “Thus at the root of the Ur-Fascist psychology there is the obsession with a plot, possibly an international one. The followers must feel besieged.”

8. The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”

9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”

10. Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”

11. Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”

12. Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.”

13. Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.”

14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning."

I thought that January 6th would change some minds but nada. I see a lot of talk on the internet and in here of people believing in fascists but I'm unsure if they actually mean it.

I believe that we are past the point of "can we stop fascists from corrupting the government." I believe its "when will the fascists start the police state in earnest" "when will the war with china begin" "when will US citizens be blocked from leaving the country" "do the nukes come first or last"

And for me personally, "when do I stop fighting a losing battle and leave the American hemisphere"

Now that pipes have frozen the whole house's system will be draining on its own through whatever damage the freezing caused, which is going to cause a lot more residual damage to wherever that water goes.

I'm assuming most of the videos of gushing water are people who don't have access to the shutoff and just have to sit helplessly watching.

Major breakthrough last night. I have a friend who is a crazy movie /TV series person. 300 steel case Blu ray with bonus editing room floor clippings edition + hundreds of regular blue ray bought in two years.

He refuses to watch anything old, pre 1990 is the rough cutoff line.

Last night he deemed nothing watchable on HBO max and I said let's watch blade runner. He called and went all in with 2001. I had to walk that back because while 2001 is an epic movie, I couldn't chance it back firing on me. So we watched the other, not quite as slow moving, Sci fi opus.

It was deemed good. And progress was made.

He watches *nothing* from before 1990? Is this guy only a sci fi/blockbuster kind of watcher? Like, there are a mind boggling array of great movies from before 1990.

I think the, massively flawed logic, is that there is just so much coming out now that there isn't time to watch the classics. He really doesn't have a genre but if I had to pick it would be sci-fi. He's big into starwars. This is a guy that would go to the movies at least once a week to watch a movie. Doesn't matter what it was, only that it was a movie. This is what happens when a person stops their drug of choice. He replaced heroin with movies. I replaced alcohol with shitposting.

Android Apocalypse posted:

Just curious, what is their Mt. Rushmore of movies? I'm curious what they consider their favorites if the cutoff is 1990. It would also give us a feel of their tastes, though if they were interested in 2001: A Space Oddyssey & Blade Rhnner, I'm guessing heavy on the sci-fix.

Before I forget, the most obvious question: which version of Blade Runner did y'all watch? Have they seen Blade Runner 2049?

Give me final cut or give me death. Yes, they saw 2049 so I had to kinda explain they mysteries that og BR left unanswered that were answered in 2049. Deckard is a replicant. Gaff knows everything.

Mt. Rushmore of movies? "The Revenant"

Ehud posted:
