She's got a thing for stories about men forced to do violence. I listened to an interview where she talks about being like 90% of the way to starting filming a movie about Chris Benoit but stopped because she realized it was too hosed up even for her.

One of her more regular TV gigs was directing episodes of a SWAT remake I only know exists because she worked on it and if you follow her twitter she's most definitely not a fan of cops.

She's iconoclastic and an important voice but I definitely don't agree with her 100% and I'm pretty sure she'd say you shouldn't agree with any celebrity 100%.

I think there's a significant (and older, and more influential) segment of the American movie-going audience that just hates abstraction and artifice. It's this nexus of people who prefer "realism" even when it's loving hideous, the attitude that cartoons are exclusively for children, a little bit of chauvinism towards other countries whose filmmaking industries don't always have the budget to make everything look photorealistic, and probably some other factors I haven't thought of.

One manifestation of this is that, rather than making films like Who Killed Roger Rabbit where two aesthetic worlds overlap while remaining distinct, you get movies where Sonic looks like a disgusting blue rat because you're only allowed one aesthetic at a time and that's what Sonic "would" look like in real life.

e: I might be overstating the extent to which the fear of artifice, the fear of silliness, and the love of uniformity are the same phenomenon, and it's very possible that some of them will outlive the others. They all seem pretty tightly intertwined to me for the moment, though.

I agree with everything you say in this, but just lol at the idea of going for realism in a film where, even before there's any CGI, you have Jim Carrey playing a character named Dr Robotnik.

No no, it’s because she’s been blacklisted for supporting Israel. Don’t tell anyone but The Jews run Hollywood. And they act in concert behind the scenes to further their aims. (It’s not some kind of Jewish media-controlling conspiracy though). That’s why we haven’t heard from Mel Gibson for years, and Ken Loach’s films don’t get US distribution.

The blacklisting idea is because she doesn't support Israel, and it's loving evangelical Christians that will cancel you faster for not supporting Israel than American Jews.

Edit: It's also entirely possible possible she doesn't get more work both because she has correct but unpopular political ideals and is terrible to work with. One will often compound the effect of the other, "I know he's a tyrant on the set, but he says all the right things to all the right people" "Yeah she's a firebrand, but when you're shooting with her everything works smoothly."

It's actually sorta hosed up that criticizing Israel as a state for committing genocide against the Palestinian people is considered more anti-semitic than screaming "the Jews control everything you loving oval office" in a drunken rant at a female cop that pulled you over for a DUI.

So I don’t know how much backlisting because of support for Palestine really goes on.

I will defer to your obviously superior knowledge of how the movie industry works, since you work in it and I don't, I just took offense at what I thought was you equating criticism of Israel with being anti-semitic, which I now don't believe you were trying to do.

I will point out all the people you mentioned speaking out against Israel and being fine with their careers are white men and Lexi Alexander is a German/Palestinian woman.

I dunno, maybe I’m being paranoid or over-sensitive but that first post about blacklisting definitely set off an alarm bell in me.

Point taken about men being ok. I definitely think misogyny could be a factor.

I think if you say anything against Israel's campaign of genocide a bazillion different groups will spend a lot of money to try and destroy you and most of those groups aren't run or organized by jewish people. Look at what they've tried to do to Ilhan Omar.

Edit: I'm starting to understand why Lexi Alexander goes full on gently caress You at criticism, since me pointing out criticism of Israel often gets misconstrued as anti-semitism get's me accused of anti-semitism.
