I’m being harassed into posting here again, so maybe I’ll do that.

I’ve been trying to take advantage of my Shudder subscription but also haven’t felt like watching anything too traumatizing lately, so I’ve been leaning on bad British stuff from the 70’s.

Well, not entirely true. I watched Ganja & Hess a few weeks ago and can’t stop thinking about it.

But then I watched Psychomania, which made no goddamn sense but the motorcycle gang’s aesthetic was so good I was rooting for them (even though the film didn’t want me to) and The Vampyres, which was 90 minutes of soft porn that was so boring it felt like it was Snyder Cut length.

I guess I’m saying that not even boobs can make a bad British horror movie from the 70’s interesting.

The pink lettering on their jackets ruled. Their helmets ruled. Sure, running over the baby was a bit much, but for the most part I had a hard time not thinking I was supposed to be rooting for them.

The Horror Thread could probably give you a lot of great suggestions.

La Casa Lobo, The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears, Knife+Heart, One Cut of the Dead, and Stranger by the Lake are all great, non-traumatic, and on Shudder right now. They also have Asylum if you want to stay bad awesome and British.

I haven't reacquainted myself with CineD since my recent half-return to SA, so that hadn't even occurred to me.

Just hit play on Knife+Heart. Thanks for the recommendation.

And I seriously can't say enough about Ganja & Hess. I hadn't heard of it until I was watching a documentary on Black horror movies on Shudder and have no idea how it completely slipped under my radar.

That monkey lizard fight was a lot of fun.

I watched the OG Godzilla vs. Kong a thousand times on a lovely VHS as a teenager, but watching it on the Criterion Godzilla boxed set release was painful.

How did I not notice how racist all the scenes on the island were? I mean, knowing teenaged me I know the answer to that, but god drat is it bad.

I can’t decide if the Kong costume was kind of racist or if the island scenes were just so racist it made the whole movie feel suspect.

(In before CPL says “yes” to that question.)

My local police are terrible (lol acab), but my favorite part of this letter is probably how they were totally taking a Surviving Edged Weapons course.

“Conflicting directions on knife issue
In 2019, we observed an in-service defensive tactics training course that included direction on using knives in a stab-stab-shoot, close-quarters scenario. Instructors also encouraged class members to try a selection of potential knives which they could purchase individually. These included t-handled and gut-hook knives intended to be used as weapons, not utility tools. PPB had not presented this change in the defensive tactics lesson plan to us prior the class. Numerous PPB members had already received this knife class before PPB informed us of it. PPB did not have then and does not have now any approved policy on use of knives as force tools. We immediately notified PPB of the problem of giving direction on use of a force tool without an approved policy.”

Every time I watch Superman '78 I'm actually surprised at how well it holds up.

I can't imagine any reason I'd watch Man of Steel, ever again.

The Superman and Lois tv pilot from earlier this year is the best Superman movie since the Donner cut of Superman 2.

Superman 4: A Quest for Peace or whatever it's called is absolute garbage. Jon Cryer's worst work. Which, Cryer seems like a nice guy but I feel both confident in my assessment and like I'm really saying something there.

I'm okay with this dying simply because I never want to see Johnny Depp act in anything, ever again.

And plenty of super racist people have spouses who are BIPOC. More importantly, racism should be thought of more in individual actions than in a category of people. He might have a huge blind spot because he thinks there's no way he could accidentally do something racist because he loves his wife. The status quo is super racist, so not resisting it can be argued to be an inherently racist action. "Racist" doesn't always have anything to do with white hoods and voter ID laws.

If it makes you feel any better, it’s probably as difficult to see a medical professional for yourself as it is for your dog right now.

The clinic I work in is the busiest I’ve seen it in the roughly 5 years I’ve been here. Vaccination rates going up doesn’t just mean that people are taking care of things they put off, it also means they’re leaving the house and doing stupid poo poo that gets them hurt, thus requiring medical attention they wouldn’t have needed a few months ago when they were still in lockdown. Additionally, you have a ton of people who put things off that are now in pretty terrible shape because they should have addressed it sooner.
