The X-Men movie world is kind of grim. Just a few decades after WW2, the United States funds the creation of robots that's only purpose is to genocide mutants.
The original timeline is especially grim when considering this. https://xmenmovies.fandom.com/wiki/25_Moments

Even in the good timeline created by DOFP, the US government basically forces Xavier to use the X-Men as special ops team or risk them doing nothing about anti mutant sentiment. After saving a crew of astronauts and seeing an alien force invade one of the X-Men, they almost immediately turn on mutants despite any help they've given them over the years. They were clearly planning to do something to mutants at some point based on the anti mutant weaponry they had days after the Phoenix event in Jean's old neighborhood. In general, unless a human is a known friend to the X-Men almost every human is a bigot to mutants immediately upon learning they are near one. The main exception to this is the start of Dark Phoenix when the X-Men go to save the astronauts. Even when facing an unstoppable alien force, humans don't try to work with the X-Men until the train is overwhelmed and basically one solider is left. About a week prior, that solider's son's hero was one of the X-Men. Despite this, he hates them and doesn't consider freeing them to fight the aliens until after his entire unit is basically killed.

In Logan, mutants are experimented on well into this decade and there has been a plot to remove them from the genepool by putting chemicals in the food supply.
In Days of Future Past, the genocide robots have been extremely effective at their goals.

This is why X-men rule even when their movie franchise is a horrible mess dragged by way too much poo poo
Most other superhero comics and movies are about preserving the status quo from invaders or corruption, while the core idea of X-men past the initial Kirby/Lee run is that the world is a horrific place that wants to kill you and you shouldnt trust people in power at any point in time. Your parents are either real or metaphorical monsters, the president is one signature away from authorizing another madman to vivisect you at his whim (and if you are born not in the first world - you are probably already sold on slave or organ market), your teacher WILL fail you either from hubris or from going mad with power. Maybe someone will try to make you a false catholic pope or a vessel of space force.

In case you don't know, it's the Marvel Universe's ruling group, comprising, at one point, Iron Man, Dr Strange, Namor, Professor X, Black Bolt and Mr Fantastic. They, for instance, decided to send Hulk away from earth and they think they've got the marvel universe's best interests at heart. The only issue is that they're always wrong. One reason I would be tempted to read the comic is to find out how much of the Buffy/Justice League pastiche tone the cartoon has is new for the show, because it doesn't feel like either the kind of thing that would get written in 2005 or that would work well in a comic.

Invincible was initially sold on the promise of being "superhero soap opera", and it was that for the most part, but then the ridiculous violence ramped up and it became nonstop Murderman vs moustached aliens.

Buffy pastiche worked well for A LOT of comics around that time because Buffy was inspired by X-Men in the first place

Marvel Comics tried really hard to push Inhumans and pretend that X-Men are a second rate franchise but once the Fox deal was finalized they finally let A-list writers and artists to work on X-Men and started like a dozen new series with a very cool weird sci-fi (but completely unfilmable, thankfully) direction.

Eternals are better than Inhumans because the chariots of gods stuff is more interesting than the very iffy eugenics and noble royals bullshit that always goes in the Inhumans stories.

Seems pretty bad for Netflix to whiff on a series at this scale? But outside of this thread and other similar spaces I heard almost no one talking about this show so the only surprising aspect is how fast they pulled the plug.

I wonder how many more half assed concepts Millar can score a payday off of before the jig is up.

Very unsurprising because the only thing going for the comic was Frank Quitely's art while the show looks generic as gently caress even by low Netflix standards
The Boys have a very appealing story/tone pitch and stellar cast, Umbrella Academy nails the quirky tone of the comic, this one is just "you like superheroes, piggies? eat it and care a lot"

Venom 2 good

It embraces comedy full time without going into just quips, making monster mash scenes the weaker part of the movie, especially with PG 13 choking it. You can see Serkis going for fun violent scenes of eviscerating random people like Gunn did in Suicide Squad, but the camera always cuts before there is a jucy chomp or strangling.

LETHAL PROTECTOR

The resolution was pretty unexpected, no redemption for Shriek, Cassidy gets munched, Eddie goes into exile setting for MCU adventures.

How can you have a law making it illegal to broadcast media depictions of gay relationships in a positive light, but also have your government-run ratings board decide that a movie depicting a gay relationship in a positive light is allowed to play, but it gets an automatic 18+ rating?

Because the fig leaf of that law is "corrupting children is bad" so presumably slapping 18+ prevents children from learning horrible unchristian things. Any school teacher who ever mentions they are gay is going to be blacklisted for life on a report from a concerned citizen but gay people are free (until further notice) to discuss gay stuff in stictly 18+ marked spaces that pure children eyes can never ever see. Maybe that excuse saves the state from even more human rights abuse accusations than there are or maybe its just another ~genius~ gotcha that our lawmakers love to be smug about.

Even the Emma Watson Beauty and the Beast got 16+ rating and it seems that its easier for Disney to slap that than spend resources on making special edition - it doesnt really affect ads or number of showings in cinemas.

I know it's Spiderman month but I'm kinda psyched for The Batman based on what I've seen so far. (We have a thread for that yet?)

The serial killer approach for Riddler makes perfect sense and will help differentiate him from the anarchist/terrorist Joker we've seen in past films. I like the stuff Matt Reeves has done. I'll miss Affleck and was lukewarm on Patterson but it looks like he'll be really good. A story finally focusing on Bruce as a detective is a welcome approach that's mostly been ignored on screen so that's fresh enough. All the Bat Tech looks rudimentary and kind of cobbled together or forged in a garage instead of being military super science which is kind of cool. What I've seen from Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman looks real good.

We have a Penguin who will do stuff.

Looks like it'll be a nice departure from the MCU template/style and maybe closer to something like Netflix Daredevil in tone. Or even Se7en. Cautiously optimistic at least.

I used to hate faux-realism approach to capes and this one goes so hard on it that it makes Dark Knight look like '66 but it looks striking, I trust Matt Reeves and Patts is perfect
