It has a weird storyline(s) but is a fun space trading/pirate fighting/ship upgrading type game if you like that kind of thing, there are lots of mods available as well.

Endless sky is a modern game with very similar features which I haven't played.

Escape Velocity and it's sequels are among my favorite games of all times.

Have you tried the plugins for EV:N that convert it to EV or EV:O? I recommend them as well.
