I think one of my favorite cryptids is the Jackalope because of the pure simplicity of it. It's just a bunny with antlers. It's an obvious fake and it's equally obvious as to how it was faked (take a dead rabbit and a dead deer and use the magic of taxidermy to combine the two), but who care? It's a fun idea and a cute design, so sit back and enjoy the idea of a little rabbit with big ol' antlers.

Another Cryptid I like that's super simple, but also super cute in the same style as the Jackalope is the Tsuchinoko.

Tsuchinokos are a Japanese cryptids and instead of being long and thin like most snakes they're short and fat. They're the pugs of the snake world.

They show up a lot in Japanese pop culture, they were the inspiration for the Pokemon Dunsparce:

They're featured on a ridiculously adorable Yugioh card:

And you can get a special achievement in Metal Gear Solid 3 if you manage to catch one and then go the whole game without eating its tasty flesh:
https://metalgear.fandom.com/wiki/Tsuchinoko

https://twitter.com/tsuchinokoradio/status/1174486943276634112?s=20

Tsuchinokos are one of those cryptids that, in addition to being precious, seems plausible because it's somehow less ridiculous than a bunch of real life animals.

I mean, you know what really lives in Japan? Giant salamanders:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vAxdmb-Qkc

I feel like seeing a salamander the size of a dog would make the idea of a chubby little snake seem way more believable via comparison.

Oh hey, there's a semi-local cryptid in WI that I absolutely love.

Meet the Hodag:

In American folklore, the hodag is a fearsome critter resembling a large bull-horned carnivore with a row of thick, curved spines down its back. The hodag was said to be born from the ashes of cremated oxen, as the incarnation of the accumulation of abuse the animals had suffered at the hands of their masters.

In 1893, newspapers reported the discovery of a hodag in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. It had "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end". The reports were instigated by well-known Wisconsin land surveyor, timber cruiser and prankster Eugene Shepard, who rounded up a group of local people to capture the animal. The group reported that they needed to use dynamite to kill the beast.

A photograph of the remains of the charred beast was released to the media. It was "the fiercest, strangest, most frightening monster ever to set razor sharp claws on the earth. It became extinct after its main food source, all white bulldogs, became scarce in the area.

Nowadays this fella is the mascot for the city of Rhinelander and its high school.

He's also pretty fuckin adorable.

Oh my God, I just met Hodag and I already love him.

I feel like cryptology is more of a study of history than of science. Where did these creatures come from? What's the mythology behind them? What might the rational explanation for them be? Do they enjoy golf? These are the big questions.

I think the closest thing I've ever had to a personal IRL life cryptid sighting is the time I was out biking and came across a really big pig. I wasn't near a farm or anything, and I had never seen pigs in that area before and never have again. It was a hella huge pig too, maybe it was a former pet that someone released into the wild because it got too big?

A big ol' thing that preyed upon lumberjacks, the Hidebehind could, well, hide behind things as quick as you could turn your head, so you never got to actually see it. If it couldn't hide behind a tree or a rock or a hillside, it'd dance around behind you. It apparently didn't like the smell of liquor, so, getting riotously drunk was your best defense. One presumes the Hidebehind was trotted out as an excuse to naive young crew hands who asked why you were breaking out the whiskey while on the job.

Through the power of google I found a bit more information on Strong Toad: http://studyofmonsters.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-strong-toad-chiles-invulnerable-toad.html

The Strong Toad is a very unique species of magical amphibians that are only native to Chile. In appearance, the creature looks like a normal horned toad except for a turtle-like shell on its back. The Strong Toad has the power of invulnerability, which allows the creature to withstand most harm and can actually glow-in-the-dark thanks to its unnatural skin. Strangely, one may think that the invulnerability is the creature's main defense mechanism. In reality, the Strong Toad's eyes actually have the ability to hypnotize any other life form away or toward the creature. Humans and predators are usually repelled but, insects or small mammals like mice are attracted toward the animal. Staring down either a predator or prey allows the Strong Toad to wisely choose which animal can get close enough to it, and if all else fails; the invulnerability protects the animal from any potential harm. Strong Toads are known to be great pets (only by choosing their owners) and are known to be great "guard dogs" due to their abilities. Though if a person ever wanted to kill a Strong Toad, fire is the most effective away due to the creature's amphibious nature but, just remember to burn it thoroughly until its reduced to cinders. Strong Toads are generally harmless but, are very picky on what or who they want to meet.

The Cryptids of Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is a game that disappointed a lot of people for a lot of reasons that we don't need to get into right now. But one area in which it didn't disappoint is creature design. A group of artists at Bethesda managed to create some fine looking monsters based on the mythic monsters of West Virginia that are nice enough looking that I really wish they got to be in a better game, let's take a gander shall we?

Grafton Monster

Ah, the Grafton Monster. The linebacker of the cryptid world. No head, no problem, just a big hunk of muscle that wants to hit you till you're a fine red paste. They kept it simple with this one, and that was the right move.

Mothman

The Fallout 76 take on Mothman is more moth than man and as such is adorable because moths are cuties and anyone who disagrees with that is wrong. The fact that they game doesn't let you have one of these as a pet is one of it's biggest failings.

Snallygaster

Look at this thing! Those teeth! Those little grabby little hands! Those eyes on its shoulder! It's such a mess, I love it.

Flatwoods monster

I gotta be honest, this one's probably my least favorite of the bunch. It's not bad exactly, but it's a little too generically "alien" and doesn't really incorporate enough of the distinct look of the original Flatwoods monster design of which I am personally very fond of. This dude's not even wearing a skirt!

Wendigo

Another good one, just one look tells you "this is a thing that wants to eat me". The distended belly is what ties the whole design together. Easily my second favorite wendigo design in pop culture (or at the very least in the top 5).

Anyway, "this ancient civilization was actually built by aliens" conspiracies never sat right with me even as a little kid. As a child I already knew that humans had made airplanes, televisions, and skyscrapers. Making a pyramid didn't seem much harder than making those things. Humans were good at making stuff and figuring out how to make other stuff, they didn't need aliens for that. That was my reasoning as a wee babe, and I gotta say present me agrees with past me on this one.

I would LOVE for a big foot to really be found or even actual DNA, but the odds are unlikely.

Same with aliens. That would be COOL! The odds are good that alien life in some form exists, but that it's gotten here? Nope.

I mean I never get upset about specific cryptids not existing because there are so many animals that are proven to exist who are just a strange or even stranger. Bigfoots might not be real, but we absolutely have gorillas and a bunch of other really cool apes. We also have bats, and sloths, and cuttlefish, and platypuses, and giant squids, and luna moths, and possums, and a while bunch of other beautiful weirdos. Oh, and cats and dogs! They live in your house and want to be your friend, how cool is that!? There could be one sitting on you right now!

For me personally I like cryptids for the same reason I like Pokemon, animals are cool and fun to think about and made up animals are also cool and fun to think about. Cool monsters are cool regardless of whether or not they actually exist.

And in regards to hauntings: No. Absolutely not. gently caress that poo poo. Listen, you sound like you're interested in having a very sweet and wholesome haunting involving a visit from a loved one and I respect that, but knowing my luck whatever ghost came to visit me would be the rear end in a top hat kind. The kind that breaks poo poo and tries to push you down a flight of stairs. Keep that supernatural bullshit far away from me forever please.

Also, I don't want to be involved in any fake hauntings either. No weird wind sounds, no gas leaks causing me to hallucinate, no weird poo poo involving electricity, no assholes pulling a prank on me with hidden audio equipment, I want none of it ever. I have enough nonsense to deal with in my life without having to worry about either real or fake ghosts.

I have absolutely seen my share of "Not Deer" and "Not Racoons" and a whole host of other "Not" animals late at night. The rational part of my brain knows it's just some critter that looks a bit spookier at dusk, but some small irrational part of my brain is like "Welp, I'm about to be eaten by a demon, this is how I'm going to die." Heck, I've gotten this feeling from my own cat in the dark when the light hits his eyes just right and they glow super bright (I have a black cat, so in the dark sometimes all you can see of him are glowing eyes) and I get hit with a feeling of seeing a "Not Cat" because my brain was just not prepared for how surreal cats look sometimes.
