Got iceborne on steam since it was only $20. I beat it on ps4, got plat for base game and only missing crowns and the celestial jellyfish achievement for iceborne with I think over a thousand hours between the two. Should I install mods and how easy is it to do on steam deck?

Are you talking about rise/sunbreak because elemental gunning is stupidly powerful but requires a bunch of skills that you may need to qurio roll to optimize and usually involves dereliction so you're constantly in danger of getting one-shot (even more than usual) and can run into ammo issues for high-end anomaly stuff. You also need to use setting sun to get the most out of your very limited ammo. It's also finicky because you have to consider shot hitzone values in addition to elemental hitzone values so the optimal areas to hit with piercing ammo might not be the same optimal areas to hit with elemental piercing ammo. Even with mail of hellfire, the scroll that gave you elemental damage is opposite of the dereliction scroll that gives you elemental damage and dereliction gave you way more. You either have to run dereliction or go back to camp to restock on ammo. Elemental gunning is just kind of a hassle overall, I didn't really do it except when I got bored or wanted to blow the gently caress out of a seething bazel/diablos, otherwise I just stuck with lance, hammer, or raw guns.

In sunbreak its admittedly a lot leaping thrust and triple poke spam, most of the variety comes with what switch skills you use and how effectively you use your wire bug skills (landing all the hits on spiral thrust or skyward thrust, using sheathing retreat to dodge unblockable attacks or facing away from the monster to use it as a gap close). Also how well you time your perfect counter slaps, which I was only good at for the weaker monsters. Leaping thrust is simply too strong to not spam, especially if you're using the elemental weakness of the monster, while triple poke into charged slap looping is better in some raw/status matchups
