Smoosh mosh eat the eggs etc

this song came on at a party recently and my musical brain trust was stumped.

its very obviously borrowing a particular sound from a certain era, with the synth/keys being indicative of like the 60s/70s sound, but what band? is there a genre or band that sound like this? its a good groove and we all kinda wish we knew where it comes from to see if there is more like it.

Fastballs "The Way" does the same thing although their whole catalog sorta leans towards that 50s/60s rock vibe moreso than Smouth Mash

its actually a pretty decent song if you forget that Smash Mouth are a lovely band.

Well it is from the album Astro Lounge, after all. Which was basically the only thing my dumbfuck preteen brain listened to for an entire summer whenever I was alone. There's still some bangers on it.

walking on the sun isn't from astro lounge, it's from their first album. astro lounge had all star, come on come on and when the morning comes on it.

astro lounge absolutely does have some bangers on it.

actually i'm not 100% sure now if i'd classify smash mouth as lounge, they were around with the rest of the lounge revival but they sounded substantially different, especially on (ironically) astro lounge. they probably had more disparate influences than the squirrel nut zippers and cherry poppin daddies of the world.

Would it be fair to say that Fastballs "the way" is also included in the lounge revival? another one of those 'sounds like a time in music' songs.

to me it's a Doors kinda groove but maybe leaning more towards the Zombies with vocals that are pretty Van Morrison

the most interesting thing about Astro Lounge is that the guitar was recorded with a broken fuzz pedal in a way that can never truly be recreated ever again. you can sort of get close to it but you'll never be able to get that specific sound. fuckin' wild

the wikipedia entry for the song says psychedelic soul/pop rock.

also says it fuses punk and ska which, uh, dunno what that citation was smoking but nah.

The Cherry poppin daddies are actually mostly a punk band. They just experimented in different genres, one of which was swing. Their swing "album" was actually just a compilation of songs from their previous 3 albums and two new tracks.

reading the wiki further

"The band decided to record the song after band drummer Kevin Coleman discovered it on one of Camp's tapes. It was the last song to be added onto Fush Yu Mang."

so it was a flash in the pan for the band even. skimming through the whole album there is nothing similar on there, but im listening at low volume on work computer speakers.

that song's pretty apocalyptic tbh

Fush Yu Mang also included a cover version of War's "Why Can't We Be Friends." I would very much like to say it was a good rendition, because I truly did (and do!) enjoy much of that album; their War cover sounded a tad too much like Weird Al Yankovic, though, and since "All Star" became the go-to casino song, I fear I just cannot listen to Smash Mouth anymore without thinking of obese old people in wheelchairs. So sorry, my friends!

quote:

25 years ago, they spoke out and they broke out of recession and oppression
and together they toked and they folked out with guitars around a bonfire
just singin and clappin, man, what the hell happened?
well some were spellbound, some were hellbound
some they fell down and some got back up and fought against the meltdown

and the kids were hippie chicks- all hypocrites
because fashion is smashin the true meaning of it

it ain't no joke

I saw a live concert on TV where, to introduce this song, they brought up some preteen kid. Eggman asked him something like, "Do you want to have sex with Britney Spears? Do you think she's hot?"

Also brought up a girl of a similar age, and asked the both of them, "Should you guys date each other?"

Could be confabulating the second part, but I don't think so. Weird times.
