if there are, I'd really like to see them for scientific curiosity. To the best of my knowledge, the only covid deaths counted are the ones that directly die while having the virus, not the ones that die months later from complications; in the US anyhow. It's totally possible that I'm wrong, though

It's frustrating to me personally because my grandmother died from post-covid complications (it damaged her liver, pancreas, heart, and brain) but because it was 4 months after her diagnosis and she wasn't positive at the time, it wasn't a direct cause of death. I am wondering how many deaths like that there will be?

Went to my local Publix in FL, curious to see what mask usage was like now as the company is following the CDC thing of not requiring masks for vaxd people. It’s not a store I’ve ever seen anyone not wear a mask on, or any kind of commotion.

Yet I was still surprised to see about 80% or more masked up today. Hard to know the split between vaxd and not wanting to take it off yet, or unvaxd and being honest. And undoubtedly a percentage who assume it’s still mandated in there.

Where in Florida? I grew up in Pinellas and my brother still lives in relative chudville in central Pasco, and he says most people are still wearing masks in the Greenwise Publix they shop at, too.

I'm in Seattle now and I bounce between, it's a very easy NPI to continue doing, and I don't want people to think I'm a republican. Also, King county has "strongly suggested" that we keep wearing masks indoors.

I have a major fear of needles, it kept me from getting some vaccines when I was younger because my mom didn't want to fight with me over it (I've rectified it as best I can). Got my Pfizer booster last night and the side effects are like dose 2 but dialed up. Almost 102.5 fever, horrible chills, bones ache, head aches, skin aches, can't sleep, so thirsty. Interesting thing is that I got it a couple hours earlier in the evening than my first two, but the next day symptoms timeline followed the same timing. I didn't bring it up myself, but Dr. Pepper is a spiced cherry flavored carbonated beverage. The main characteristic flavor compound in cherry (real cherries and cherry flavor) is benzaldehyde (same as almonds!). So there can be some flavor connection between cherry cough syrup and Dr. Pepper depending on the flavor used in the cough syrup.

The flavorhouses that make soft drink flavors are the same ones that make cough syrup flavoring. It's all just chemistry.

For that matter, why does early morning ocean air (like 4:00-5:00am) smell so good? It’s hard to describe, but until I moved to the Atlantic coastline I’d never smelled it before: it’s like air crack and I literally get into a breathing frenzy when the conditions are right and I can smell it.

Nothing smells like it, though Erolfa is the closest I think I’ve found.

Oh I've never heard of that cologne, I had to look up what it was. Unfortunately I'm not a fragrance scientist!

I live on the Pacific coast and the smell of the ocean is always one of my favorite things.

So I looked it up, that's a marine fragrance and a lot of people say it does smell just like the ocean. And from what I could find, apparently the smell of the ocean is largely characterized by dimethyl sulfide.

https://www.acsh.org/news/2021/07/20/what-gives-ocean-its-wonderful-smell-vile-chemical-15667

DMS is important in a lot of things (it gives berries their distinctive tastes), too. But in higher concentration, it's pretty gnarly.

Also on the cola side, Coca Cola is a combination of seven different flavors: lime, lemon, orange, neroli (orange blossom), cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg. I actually used to work in the same compound where the Coke flavor was blended, that section was protected by crazy amounts of security and 12 foot high razor wire.

It'd be interesting to get a read between the states with a British-ish climate (PNW), and much colder and much warmer January climates, but I suppose that's going to be badly skewed by different levels of NPIs and testing, especially as the warmest states are also the most covid-denying (and unvaccinated) ones.

At work and phone posting so can't share data right now, but it's been interesting to watch cases in the Seattle metro area decline while the eastern part of Washington state continue to see case rates climb. Eastern Washington is chud country though.

Antibody and antiviral infusion treatments also reduce the risk of severe disease more than molnupiravir, according to published data. And molnupiravir comes with reproductive risks, so it's not generally recommended for patients who are pregnant or trying to conceive.

On the shortlist of four early COVID-19 treatments recommended by the government for patients before they need hospitalization, molnupiravir comes last – for use only when the other treatments can't be used.

So Gandhi says there's still a place for molnupiravir in the current COVID treatment landscape: as "an alternative when one of those other drugs can't be given, because of drug interactions or feasibility issues."
