Man, back in my mid-teens I got on to some of the early Acid House stuff that A Guy Called Gerald was putting out thanks to a lad a few houses up who was a few years older and with the cash to spend on 12"es - stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7vxHOCeiQ4 was absolute fire back then, and it's still a real bop today. I went off on a whim to see what else Gerald might have got up to, and I'd totally missed that in 1995 (I was in my heavy Goth phase by then) he'd morphed from the Acid House scene into Jungle / DnB and produced this absolute genre masterclass : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycq0XRAbTI4 put over an hour to listen to this in its entirety; unbelievably cool stuff, labelled as a 'forgotten classic' in every review, landing in a bunch of 'best of' lists. Banger.

Soundalikes: Listening to Ministry's The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste and Dream Song dings my 'What does this sound like?' bell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28hT07X4gvI&t=3s Took a bit of thinking, but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AFVJoJz1cE&t=50s Surprisingly the Ministry album came out in 1989 and Tetsuo II wasn't released until 1992, I'd have absolutely thought the Ministry guys saw TII and were inspired.

I gave up on listening to newly-released Metal a good long time back (though I still do nostalgia revisits) but I just tried out AGE OF APOCALYPSE from the Stereogum 2022 Best New Bands' list https://www.stereogum.com/2203077/best-new-bands-artists-2022/lists/best-new-bands/ and drat if they don't nail the early 90s Roadrunner sound, they have a lot of LIFE OF AGONY and a fair bit of TYPE O NEGATIVE in their sound (plus a spot of CROWBAR, maybe), not surprising as they are also from Brooklyn. https://ageofapocalypseny.bandcamp.com/album/grim-wisdom Long time since I was even slightly enthused by crunchy guitars.
