I've watched a bunch of videos of this and it really looks just like Battlefield 4, only with slightly newer graphics. It's just so lame that they decided to do a future game and then set it in such a near-future era it's basically indistinguishable from earlier iterations of the modern warfare battlefield games, instead of doing something distinctive and cool like 2142 with all it's unique modes, vehicles, weapons, etc. What am I missing? Are there any actual futuristic things that I just didn't pick up on in trailers?

You're missing that this is a modern military shootmans game because modern military shootmans sell the best and they hope to appeal to the modern military shootmans crowd since coddern warfare 2019 and warzone has been eating their lunch.

It's just set every so slightly into the future so they can have robodogs and emp grenades and speculative near future versions of existing vehicles so that they're not beholden to real life vehicle capabilities for balancing purposes.

I guess my fantasy of a creative AAA shooter with cool giant robots and innovative game modes will have to remain in 2006

Im fine with this. Some small recompense for the boring (but pretty) snoozefests of BF1/BFV.

BFV was a truly awful game - I was almost astounded at how much worse they made every part of it - but I really, really enjoyed BF1. It wasn't perfect and the weapon selection was questionable in a lot of ways, on top of having many of the same problems as BFV in terms of progression and basic mechanics, but I think the maps worked really well and the classes felt pretty good once you got a hang of them. I also loved the silly WWI tanks and the behemoth system and it had a lot of hardcore servers which were just a fantastically good time with low TTK and maps that were greatly enhanced by the low TTK. BF4 was definitely still the better game in basically every way but I guess that's why I'm disappointed by 2042, it feels like it doesn't need to exist when BF4 is still more than just playable, it looks great

I will say the way the steam page for 2042 mentions custom stuff is pretty promising, I'm hopeful it will mean actual distinct servers and not just the matchmaking mush of BFV.

DDOSed to death I guess but I did recently play TF2 for the first time a few months ago, and I took the time to unlock everything and cap some of the grinds or whatever, and man, that was a truly spectacular online FPS. I hope this game has even a fraction of that frenetic creativity

Going back to BF4 after playing any modern FPS really shows how badly BF4 has aged in terms of movement and whatever the hell "feel" encompasses

Hm, I haven't played it in about two years, but I feel like it aged fine when I was last futzing around. Same for BF1. It's only the BF2 era of games that I have a genuinely hard time immersing myself in these days, but I'm gonna have to go back and give it another try to see if it doesn't hold up like I thought it did. The levelution stuff definitely never amounted to anything but an annoyance, especially on the flood level

I loving hate how EA play won't work if you have origin installed, it's just intensely frustrating and makes anything launching via EA play barely worth the effort to even get working. lol great, it'll be another BF game where I don't have attachments for like 75% of the guns in the game for the game's entire life cycle. I played like 250 hours of BF1 and just barely unlocked all but two or three of the weapons, most with barely any options. sucked enough I came close to pulling the trigger on class packs a few times but just couldn't live with that level of microtranscation

Honestly faster unlocks works for me because I’ve never once unlocked everything in a BF game despite dedicating enormous amounts of time to basically every previous one besides hardline

Also hoping it runs well at 2k on a 3070, but I guess since people are saying it can do okay on a 1070 I’m not super worried

Hopped into portal and I had a lot of fun but I do have a major gripe: squad only revives extend to BF1942? Not being able to revive anyone with the medic kit is a major nerf to their usefulness and scoring capacity, I always played 1942 (and everything up until now) as a dedicated revive machine and often topped scoreboards with those alone, so it’s a big loss for me not being able to do that

Otherwise I absolutely love the old maps and the game runs extremely well at 144hz on ultra settings (RTX off, that caused some hitching) on my 3070

I kinda have a soft spot for them though, even though they're stupid, reminds me of the dumb quips they gave specialists for MVP back in Black Ops 3.

Yeah that makes them feel super out of place in the portal too, imo, but I agree it is extremely funny to see the same three to five soldiers give the same three dumb lines game after game

Also I have to say these menus are awful, like, just renaming a custom loadout requires several counterintuitive clicks. I don’t understand why these menu changes are always necessary, BF4 had a perfectly good menu!

Yeah they need to significantly increase XP and reduce the numbers needed for attachments, 150 shotgun kills for slugs is nuts given that 15 or so kills is a good match for me and I usually top my squad, that’s going to be basically impossible for most people (including me) using buckshot on these giant rear end maps, it makes the shotgun permanently useless, seemingly

The other stuff just seems like a huge grind especially since the SMGs are better than all the assault rifles and DMRs, seemingly

Also five XP for healing is bogus, it should be 15 at least

Anyway I can’t stop thinking about how bad this sound design is compared to BF1. The way a soldier dies in BF1 compared to what sounds like a first rehearsal delivery of “I do not need any assistance!!” over and over is just night and day for basic immersion. Ironically a big mass of individual idiots who can’t communicate trying to take the tower works sometimes because it’s being defended by the same, I’ve taken the towers multiple times by just…taking the elevator up and dropping a spawn beacon, then someone else does the same and two squads is enough because 90% of the enemies who spawn just zip line way and nobody seems to care about objectives about 50% of the time

When it’s anything less than that they’re impossible though, it’s absolutely bad game design, just like literally everything else about this game

Love how matchmaking will drop you into games with less than ten seconds left over and over so I just get a loss on my record and don’t even spawn into the map to show for it. Just really good stuff having that happen three times in a row

Frog Act
Feb 10, 2012

Yeah I don’t care about the loss it’s more the waste of time. Also, huge advantage to cross play if you have a decent PC: you’re guaranteed a tank every match because you’re locked in before 80% of the players have even loaded the game. Seriously I haven’t once missed the tank spawn when I’ve been in a game from the beginning, it owns lol

Funny how the best feature so far (tank availability) is certainly at the expense of console players who never get to use vehicles apparently

I was really looking forward to actually earning attachments in a battlefield game by occasionally using bots, especially since the requirements for unlocks are insanely high this time around. I’m not awful at the game, I’m usually first place in my squad and average 15-20 kills per match, but at that rate (and given the objective uselessness of some guns, like every AR) I’m never going to unlock stuff

Come to think of it it wouldn’t feel so onerous if the PP-28 wasn’t ten times better than any other gun and the two early ARs didn’t feel like complete garbage. It’s bizarre how bad the burst on the AN whatever is, in BF3/4 the three round burst fire on the Abakan or whatever was dope and greatly enhanced the weapon, in this it’s slower and less accurate than single fire at range and purposeless in close quarters compared to full auto
