i 100% promise you that this is like a first-month (first-week often) kind of problem and you'd find it perfectly natural real quick. it is just real easy to bounce off a bit when you're just playing around, since the way it looks and works a bit different needs relearning reflexive things (e.g. at first it looks like noise and you get real tired as your brain tries to cobble together something visually useful out of it).

i don't think the market is that big for it anyway. still, clojure remains good, and fingers crossed with chez scheme (an excellent scheme compiler) now being free (and adopted by racket, an excellent environment) there may be a little bit more interest, but probably it'll all continue to be a bit of a dead end.

needing to pick my job hardware on monday i am leaning towards asking for the generic desktop pc with the student lab ubuntu image installed and centrally managed (i.e. no root for me), and an ipad pro for notes/recording and presentation stuff. think it'll be the right mix for keeping me from tinkering and focusing on the actual work.

nah. i don't think they are even oem keys, it is a money laundering venue using retail keys. they buy the keys in the cheapest possible region (accounting for 50% of the rebate) using various shady money accounting for the rest of the rebate. microsoft doesn't really try to police it, as it is not that easy to claim any given purchase illegitimate.

this is not a thing that is happening though. well, so far, windows 11 may indeed change things. windows 10 telemetrics is very limited in the license, and i am pretty sure microsoft understands, if any company whatsoever can, how they'd be actually ruined by oversteps there.

one of mongos worst impacts on me was that i had mentally lumped up redis with it as "webtech nonsense databases", but having been forced to not only use redis, but write some patches for it, it wound up joining my database toolbox (with postgres and sqlite). its just a really simple thing, in its own niche, making straightforward promises, and keeping them in a way that gives confidence because they are pretty much just modern linux primitives used properly.

nowadays i use it as a kind of scratch whenever doing exploratory programming. might be doing stuff in multiple transient processes and just grab stuff out of and stuff it into redis rather than bother with repeatedly pulling stuff from files.

being lazy isn't cool, although i understand it's the only logical response to our current economic system.

i have supported leftist politics all my life precisely because i don't want to mentally take on anyone else's problems, and the only way to achieve that is by strengthening the system to where that is doable. laziness is a very desirable state.

beware, data science/machine learning space is at hype peak right now, there’s going to be a course correction - and a brutal one at that. the market is flooded with entry level candidates (stem msc/phd with no relevant industry or postgrad experience), and it’s a real bloodbath to get your foot into a decent door

to some extent true for the hyperparameter-tuning-automaton, but i think the renewed faith in automation (i.e. the often incorrect belief that a computer can actually do A Thing) will prevail for some time yet. for every phrenology-as-a-service startup there are two unsexy companies doing slightly warmed over control theory stuff in areas where it will probably work

oled screens are generally an improvement, in particular for devices that you use for different kinds of content so something like cnn logo or health bar doesn’t burn into it over 10 years of screen time. i replied in the context of significant public expectation that the oled switch would have had a stronger gpu, which it did not

yeah, i don't think anyone should *upgrade*, it is not that big a deal. still, if you're looking to buy a switch anyway and foresee using it handheld a fair bit then the oled version is a notable improvement. not so much the screen technology, but the modest .8" bump in screen size (shrinking bezels) actually makes a pretty big difference in person.

e: oh, and never checked that out, but apparently the kickstand is like a real thing on the oled.

i've never used DI that was simpler than just having a function that assembled and configured all the dependencies and returned a ready-to-use object, but I guess I also haven't tried in several years

i've worked on several projects using di to excellent effect, but the value has mostly been purely as a structuring exercise rather than any "real" functionality. i.e. you have some large components which are *internally* not fully di'd (as they are naturally tightly coupled), and then a level above where the things are injected together and never touch each other directly.

i don't really believe in going "this is a di project" and doing everything that way mindlessly. not only will it often not help you, but it will also water down the separation (i.e. you see A get injected into B, but in practice A and B are logically inseparable and the injection is purely form).
