I've noticed that Mercs 2 suffers a bit from empty open world syndrome in that the world they've created is so beautiful but it's so big that everything is spread out and there's a whole lot of empty space with nothing to do but admire the scenery and at the same time you're not spending enough time in places so you never get familiar with the world like you're learning your way around.

One upshot though is the draw distance is loving insane. Like I can be deep in the Amazon and see skyscrapers right on the horizon that are halfway across the map and in the words of Todd Howard 'see that skyscraper? you can go there'. Venezuela is incredibly pretty
Yeah it's very nice and even though it doesn't compare to draw distances today (now that consoles have the memory to do a lot of different levels of detail) it was a big next-gen step up over the BF2-level draw distances of Mercenaries 1.

The world not having as much detail as we expect these days is just a consequence of it being made for PS360 level hardware. But hey it could have been worse:

So I've come to the conclusion I won't be able to 100% Mercs 2 cause some of the side missions are bullshit hard. Therefore my goals are now the following:

- Complete all story missions
- Unlock all outposts
- Complete all side missions at level 1
- Complete all assassinations and building destructions
- Find all the collectibles

This feels achieveable. I haven't gamed in a couple of days though cause I've got wisdom tooth pain and it's been too bad for me to think about games :(
Some of Mercs 2 feels like it's not balanced for single player and assumes you're playing coop

The original pinball machines didn't have flippers or anything you could actually do to play, so they required no skill, they were closer to pachinko where the ball just hit whatever it hit randomly on the way down, so yeah they were used for gambling.

VGCW was fantastic but it was all the writing and storylines that really made it, it makes sense that couldn't go on forever, but it had a good run.

AI vs AI matches without the writing and storylines is just Saltybet, which is fine for a diversion, but is generally incapable of being hype like VCGW was.

No, I mean like everything looks like a blur and my eyes and brain can't keep up with what I'm looking at.

Thankfully I just discovered a speed option in Tyrian so I was able to make it through the first stage at Slower speed and I'm glad to see there's a Slug speed beneath that if I need to slow it further.

I even got to the secret level from the first stage which is pretty neat :)

For me a lot of shmups, especially bullet hells, aren't just bullets and negative space but rather it's all just a big overwhelming blur and I'm lucky if I can focus on the bullets that are just about to smash into my ship. Like, lemme find a screenshot of a shmup and I'll try to show what I mean.

Idk what game that is but this is how shmups end up going for me. If I try to focus on my ship, I'm basically only able to see and comprehend this highlighted area.

If I try to focus on the enemies and their bullets, I get the opposite issue. I can't keep track of my ship anymore.

And if I try to follow the entire screen, it just turns into this.

It sucks because obviously the solution is "don't play shmups" but I like shmups even if I just cannot get my brain to process them.

Was cyberstorm actually any good? I know its still got the cybrids and bioderms and stuff, but I've never actually played it. Which is actually pretty sad since I think its on GOG now, I gotta do something about that.
My impression of the Earthsiege/Battledrome series back in the day was that it was the also-ran to the Mechwarrior "Trilogy" - not as good, not as strategic, slower, uglier, but that after getting those early games under their belt they really knocked it out of the park with StarSiege, which was everything Mechwarrior 3 wasn't (due to switching developers rather than having seasoned developers build on every lesson they learned), just in time for the whole big budget AAA stompy mech sim genre to collapse into a singularity, taking the big budget AAA space sim genre with it.

Cyberstorm I don't remember but could it possibly stand up to MechCommander?

Do you have more info on where to get this and how to get it running on Windows 10? Starsiege was one of my favorite games when I was growing up. I played it for hours everyday when it was a new game. Now that i'm an adult with disposable income, i've given up on the giant mech sim genre in video games, because all of the modern day attempts are bad, and I just play the table top Battletech game instead.
I don't remember if StarSiege needed any fixes for Windows 10, but Hi-Rez studios put all of the EarthSiege, StarSiege, and Tribes games up for download a while back, and StarSiege is included in the same download as Tribes 1 because that's how they were bundled back in the UK

https://www.pcgamer.com/hi-rez-makes-previous-tribes-games-free/

https://www.tribesuniverse.com/

I suppose for the ultimate compatibility you could run them in a VM or even run Wine on Windows 10's Linux Subsystem

What decent hack and slash games have local single screen co-op for PC? My son and I have been playing the hell out of Minecraft Dungeons and I am looking for something similar. He's 6 so these type of games are easier for him at the moment, but we are both getting tired of MD.
Emulate the classic gauntlet games, you can start with NES Tengen Gauntlet or Gauntlet IV on the Genesis/Megadrive since both aren't endless games like the arcade game, you can actually work towards the end in a linear progression. The Legends/Dark Legacy 3D games will feel more modern/Diabloish, and finally there's the recent 2014 Gauntlet/Slayer Edition which is basically an indie game on PC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha1MPksCczk

As indie games go there are a bunch but I can agree it's hard to find out if they really support same screen same system coop. Like for example I think HAMMERWATCH does but the HEROES OF HAMMERWATCH sequel does not? Of course you can always buy them one at a time and then refund them if they don't support it, indie games are cheap on steam.

Pure is an ATV racing game where you have to bust a ton of tricks off ramps to get boosts to get better tricks to get better boosts. It's basically SSX on four wheels, complete with the 00s indie soundtrack. It's pretty fun, the coolest part is that the race courses are really open with a ton of different racing lines to choose from so you can find the route that's best for you. The courses are also really neat. So far I've gone round the Italian Alps, a dormant volcano in New Zealand, dunes in the Nevada desert and a lush Hawaiian island. There's even a freestyle mode where you need to bust out tricks for points till you run out of gas. Also it's made by Disney for some reason??? All in all it's a decent racer that sorta but not quite fills the Burnout hole in my heart
Pure was during one of those "on again" periods of game development where Disney owned a bunch of game studios and had them actually release games, it was around the time of Split/Second, the very underrated disaster racer which sounds like it would be like Burnout but actually feels very different.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCkGIhskEjs

I don't know how much of it is the fairly unique dual stick weight shift control scheme but Pure really feels far and away better than any other ATV game I've ever played. It's just a very nice feel that none of the endless MX vs ATV sequels have never recaptured. Too bad about that securom on PC.
