Yes, that's the really confounding thing about it. No matter how much it's in their existential interest to do so, Democrats refuse to do politics. It's more than just their class or fundraising interests preventing them from doing literally anything - there has to be some kind of ideological blinder that leads them to total impotence. Democrats are watching Republicans cut the brake lines of the electoral system and just going, "you'll be sorry when I start driving that thing around and everyone sees what you've done. I'll wrap myself around a loving tree, and then you'll be really sorry."

the neoliberal consensus in the Democratic Party and news media see “doing things that will make your citizens want to vote for you” as cheating at politics, as if politics was high school debate club

vote for the democrats because they don’t overtly say racist things like those gross republicans (they’ll just enact the exact same grotesquely unpopular policies)

this also explains their hatred at anyone who chooses not to vote. how can you not think we’re the smarter ones, we said all those nice eloquent things

I felt like this was simplistic at first, but I think there is a lot to it. Like when Nancy Pelosi said, "we're all about identity now," she meant it literally. Democrats are selling people a basket of cultural signifiers that reinforce their own sense of superiority over others. Voting Democrat proves you're a good person, and that's all that counts. Democrats themselves only need to serve the whims of market forces, because as an advanced bourgeois dictatorship those are the only forces that count.

I just wish I could understand why people think this is a party worth voting for; surely West Wing was not that popular. Party leadership and individual politicians are obviously incentivized to be the party of rhetoric and nothing else, but I’ve gone from wondering “why do poor people keep voting Republican” in 2012 (which isn’t actually very true anyway) to “why do poor and lower middle class people keep supporting neolibs” these days

not that I think voting even matters at this point; even beyond election fixing and the mathematical impossibility of getting enough people in the senate who aren’t awful and the dems’ insistence on not doing anything I think American institutions are so thoroughly compromised and broken that having a hundred communists in the senate couldn’t fix them without starting completely over

What it really gets down to is that the only difference between the two parties is culture war bullshit, and the Dems have made it clear they aren't even willing to protect any of that at this point. Voting for the Democrats doesn't even protect abortion anymore, so why should anyone bother voting for them?

Abortion's been eroded away over the decades and is de facto illegal for huge swaths of the country no matter what. How long until gay marriage is repealed?

The Democrats can't even get their poo poo together enough to let people smoke weed or close Gitmo! Amazon's started causing straight up Triangle Shirtwaist poo poo to start happening and I'm not sure if the Dems have even acknowledged it. Like, I genuinely don't know what their agenda is at this point because they don't seem to be committed to doing anything other than telling people that Donald Trump is bad

and that doesn't even get into the complete destruction of every institution in this country. Even if a bunch of well-intentioned Democrats rode an ahistorical blue wave into 70 dems in the Senate and Joe Biden's heart grew 3 sizes I don't know that they'd be able to actually get anything done considering SCOTUS and the absolute loving mutants that make up our federal judges and the nightmare that is our state and local governments.

I come from North Carolina, a state that was recently ruled to have one of the worst cases of gerrymandering in the country, to the point that it was ordered to redraw its districts. Do you know what happened? The Republican general assembly made the smallest adjustment they could and got the Democrats in the assembly to sign off on it, because they would continue to have safe seats that would make it easy for them to stay in power, do nothing, and fundraise. You can't vote your way out of that, especially with the usual vote suppressing horseshit that goes on across the entire South (and, more recently, everywhere else).

The more stories I see like this, the more I think the Democrats are doomed in November. The "Everything's fine, back to normal" viewpoint doesn't work when people are constantly seeing signs of collapse.

I talked a lot about the pending legitimacy crisis back during the Floyd riots (specifically, see that time the mayor of NYC politely asked the NYPD to please not trample people to death with their horses and in response the NYPD kidnapped his daughter) but man, I'm honestly a little shocked at how completely useless every institution and every government agency has become in this country. I shouldn't be shocked, but I am.

Does the government do anything anymore aside from feed tax money to arms manufacturers and kill people of color?

Edit: I just realized I'm literally a civil servant and I'm not sure if the government does anything. I know my job primarily consists of seeing court cases get rescheduled over and over forever
