hatty posted:I’d be interested to see how Pikmin 3 deluxe sold I believe it’s the highest selling Pikmin game, which sounds alright until you consider that the first three games in the series all came out on less-than-successful consoles. I honestly think that the Pikmin game that Niantic just put out on phones is gonna be the actual determinant for whether we get more Pikmin. It’s one of those things that clearly has its fans at Nintendo (up to and including Miyamoto since the first one was his baby) but has not found it’s market yet, even though pretty much everything Pikmin is at worst interesting and at best outstanding, including the phone game and the animated shorts. The other issue is that Pikmin as a concept is really built to utilize processing power of a console and that’s just not what Nintendo is about these days. 2 and 3 are some of the best-looking games of their respective consoles and no Nintendo franchise would benefit more from 4K than it. If they made 3 look that good on Wii U tech, imagine what they’d do with something as powerful as even a PS4 Pro. Oh my god imagine a fully open-world Pikmin. I know you’d have to really adjust the day-timer stuff but you could almost pull a reverse Pikmin 2, with an overworld where you have unlimited time and puzzles that require elaborate solutions, and caves you spelunk into that have set time limits because of oxygen that you have to clear of resources as quickly as possible ala the mission mode in 3. I also think it’s RTS-adjacent roots would really lend itself to resource gathering for crafting and base-building, even though both of those things are sort of passé now. You might even be able to build that within the Pikmin 3 engine if they wanted something that could be made for the Switch.

Cool Dad posted:I just bought a switch for the first time. I got Breath of the Wild which seems obligatory, and I bought 100 dollars of estore credit. What should I buy now? What are the best things on Switch? I bought Battle Brothers because I wanted a strategy game and it's on sale and I've heard it's good. All of the recommendations so far are good, I’ll add a few more exclusives. I’m gonna assume that you didn’t have a Wii U because anyone who had a Wii U probably bought a Switch at launch so the Wii U Port Pack will also be worth looking at: Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze Pikmin 3 Deluxe Super Mario 3D World Captain Toad If you’re looking for weapons-grade time wasters, there are three Warriors games all with hundreds of hours of gameplay just waiting for you. Hyrule Warriors 1 is bigger but Age of Calamity is better, especially if you end up enjoying BotW. Fire Emblem Warriors is good if you somehow run out of the Hyrule ones or love Fire Emblem. AoC is my second highest game by hours played, aside from Picross, which you should get if you have an even remote interest in logic puzzles, because they are the best. Other quick hits if you love Mario: Mario + Rabbids is a very charming strategy game ala XCom. Paper Mario is a fun adventure game also full of charm (and the best soundtrack on the entire console). Mario Maker 2 is past it’s heyday but it’s got a butt-ton of content if you’re into Mario. If you have people to play with in person, Arms, Clubhouse Games and Mario Party Superstars are all wonderful party games. No matter what games you want, get an account at Dekudeals.com. It’s a price checker that you can fill out a wish list on that will warn you when the game you want goes on sale. At this point every first party Nintendo game has been on sale for at least $40, most of them less. BotW was $30 multiple times in the last month, so if you want to maximize your money, it’s essential. (that said I paid $60 for BotW and it’s worth twice that easily, any sale is like gravy.

Also I’d love to know who you’re downloading Mario Maker levels from if it’s not other players. all of those games are primarily built for social and/or multiplayer gaming, that’s the whole reason they exist. Which is good, because Nintendo recognizes that if they want millions of people to buy their games they have to make games for all different kinds of people. That’s what they’ve always done. They make cool single-player adventures, fun competitive games, social and cooperative games, and weird little accessory-driven experiments. If you want a console that only has single player games buy a PlayStation. (Which also isn’t an insult, because I love my PlayStation, just that complaining that half of the games Nintendo has made are not aimed directly at you is kinda silly) b_d posted:loved playing wario ware on the gba and 3ds, whole family huddled around the handheld screen and reaching in to push buttons. I can’t tell if this is a joke but the original Warioware did have single-screen mini games for multiple people and every version of the game released on a home console had party gaming as an explicit goal. Plus they had DIY on the DS, which is also social gaming because you don’t just make levels for yourself.

I finished Picross S7 last night minus the mega puzzles because I don’t like those as much and they’re the same shapes so doing them immediately loses a little impact if I remember a puzzle. I think the puzzle design in this one was the best yet, I feel like there were a lot of really devious smaller puzzles and the first two massive puzzles might be the hardest ones they’ve designed, but not in a really frustrating way. And now I’m back to knockoffs. I discovered that Depixion had a Halloween pack. That game has a lot of really weird quirks (it’s three puzzles in a group that each have two color options that stack on each other to make a wide variety of color options, and all of the puzzles are based off of 4x4 chunks instead of 5x5) but the reward of watching the game put little gifs of how you solved the puzzles on top of each other to reveal the image is always fun. I also started a phone Picross which is fun but is so far piss-easy. No one can beat Jupiter.

Clear, concise text descriptions combined with with short, focused videos (generally around 15-30s) for illustrating the parts that are hard to describe in pure text. It was such a great format, I couldn't wait for it to catch on and become really widespread, which it obviously would. See also: Serebii, the very best website for Pokémon game information going all the way back to Red and Blue. In my dream world that’s what all gaming resource sites would look like. The information is all very clear, sorted by generation, each game has its own page with all of the unique things for that game plus common things people might be looking for like exclusive lists and how to get event legendarys. Plus they have full maps of all of the older games that are super easy to navigate. It absolutely wouldn’t exist if it had to start today but because it’s been around and everyone trusts it, it sticks around.

Snake Maze posted:The switch version has a little bit of new content starring Olimar and Louie (it’s basically some new mission mode levels made from remixed bits of the story stages) and some minor changes to how charge works that makes it more useful (you don’t need to be locked on and it only sends your currently selected color). It also adds some new difficulty settings - “hard” is actually the same as the Wii U game and “normal” is the new easy mode. (There’s also “ultra spicy” for an actual hard mode) Also co-op story mode, I think now literally everything can be played 2P instead of just missions and multiplayer edit: also a Piklopedia which is honestly worth the $30 alone

Honestly if they’re gonna skip the story entirely I don’t think they’re gonna get out of it what people who love the game get out of it. The battle system is very well made and the battles are enjoyable but for me the story and themes are the reason to play. All three modes of play (dialogue, battle, exploration) work in a balance together to the end of giving weight to the choices you make through the story. Missing one of them is gonna mean your experience is significantly hampered. If you’re asking “can I play this without the cutscenes,” I would just go find a different game.

It starts rough but by the time poo poo gets really serious all the key players are at worst competent (Serenoa, Roland) and at best outstanding (Frederica, Benedict). It’s not on the tier of something like Three Houses (probably the high water mark for English game dub performances) but I think if you don’t mind an English dub it will more than suit your needs.
