First episode of the Shenmue anime is surprisingly promising! I think divorcing the story from the awkward gameplay and glacial pacing of the actual games is only going to do it a favor.

Yeah, I don't really like the games at all but I've been having a good time with the anime. Ryo actually has a personality and is a character, who would have thought? E: Also yeah, Shenmue 3 came out like two years ago and there's no sign of a Shenmue 4, so this is really less of an active marketing ploy than almost any manga or light novel adaptation

You are supposed to suit the character for what you're doing with said work and putting them to different mediums. Also, the wooden, awkward Ryo we know in the west is really a product of the game's subpar localization and voice acting, so the anime's dub could be argued as getting the creator's intent for the character across better than the actual game.

They are very specifically only doing the first two games this season, since there are no characters from 3 in the promo art, OP, or cast list, and the cold open of episode 1 is a flash forward to the end of 2.
