So I hate the current recommendations thread because its just links and the ones asking questinos aren't getting anything useful from them

Lets start with what I know, feel free to add in or correct things (going off memory and not googling poo poo):

Over in the east in the mid 80s you had some legit tracks popping up that showed some of the first signs of what hip hop was going to be:

over in philly this dude Schooly D was passing around tapes and got this thrasher of a track played on the radio:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQc4A-XBzBY

you'll recognize those sweet 909 pops but just drowned in noise in the best way, it was such an impact at the time that ice t caught a wiff of this banger and had to make his own version of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izuMg1GGnMc

in the meantime, you've got some cool poo poo coming from the west too, but the flow started getting real jazzy and unique when dudes like rakim came through:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TN-kDEKxF0

it also didn't hurt that eric b was a master of the fuckin tables

but then some dude going by the name too short starts passing around tapes around his nieghborhood in oakland and Born To Mack was born:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwEk3iYPZ7I&list=PLDRcnHVFFthcgVEx6Wz0bg1wxoLSPHT3u

which started a whole style that probably wouldn't be picked up again until somewhat recently (lil b anyone??)

the self-conscious message stuff was only getting better, and then a little group called de la soul started pushing daisies and holy poo poo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEZ8SzfRZBo

and they would go on to be a part of an entire collective of conscious rap dudes, influenced by old 60s-70s black jazz out of their dads record crates and almost becoming OCD with the perfection of the art of the sample
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvzOfm0ZhS8

this movement lead to its defined peak (at the time) which culminated in the genres defining moment and one of the more perfectly put together albums of the 90s (yes i know you have a lot to say about this statement but post your poo poo later)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqVD2yQqH7M

but in the meantime, you also had artists like masta ace out of NYC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0nMJMp5acQ

and 2nd to None, with such an underrated album these days:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f25Yk4g5GM&list=PLn7qZ70jqTZEmJ7M3wYXZR5w3t99wefj3

but we're getting into the crossover between five boroughs hip hop and west coast gfunk jams. i don't think i need to post the plethora of de la soul, tribe called quest, the nubian movement, the ladies, etc. but i can if needed

to be continued (by someone)

lets jump back a year before de la's debut, where the hell did they come from? well a good bit of it is influenced by jungle brothers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9iYBtnckio

this poo poo (afaik) basically starts the nubian movement, hip hop with black positive messages and some drat good funk grooves

but its not like this poo poo was just one person, a cat named guru moves (after getting no love) from jersey to brooklyn and with dj premier, yeah one of the most acclaimed producers of all time, is making some good poo poo. putting out albums, making essentially mixtapes of him rapping freely over jazzy samples that he calls jazzmatazz. and then he and premier put out the ultimate 90s album (imo). yeah you'll know that poo poo from grind session (if you were poor like me) or skate or whatever:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqOm22CzGhA

but what the gently caress is going on down south? aw poo poo dude this group ugk is putting out one of the best mid-90s southern hip hop albums of all time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5BISk5IQm4

and still though, there is so much missing here. but we'll get to it

lets branch from gang starr for a second, because the Crooklyn Dodgers and/or Gang Starr Foundation is one of my favorite movements from that era and produced (with a lot of help from premier) some true classics

So gang starr (guru, dj premier) brought some guys under their wing, but the notable ones are group home which puts out livin proof in 94 (95?) and probably contains some of premiers best beats:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI264qcI2lo

But then a young protege named Jeru the Damaja who is featured a quite a few gang starr tracks also puts one out, and it is a MUST LISTEN to anyone vibing with this dry east sound (yeah i know it was posted earlier like a lot of these idgaf):

edit: thanks for that i thought it was the playlist for the whole album

Sick, bunch of classics so far. Steve Biko was the first tribe song I ever heard, one of my very first Napster downloads

posting in this thread to say it's good and there should be more threads like this.

i'd love to take over and add on and fill gaps with my little privater köpfgarten favorites but i feel like i'm already half the new posts in this forum and i'm not that fast a typist. also have weird gaps in my golden age canon knowledge, like i don't think i've listened to steve biko since i was a kid.
