Let's start with the Steelers and Big Ben's successor. Today Mike Tomlin said "all options" are on the table so that means Tomlin might be behind center himself.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33093370/mike-tomlin-says-all-options-table-next-pittsburgh-steelers-starting-qb

What's the most likely scenario for Pittsburgh to land a new QB? Draft? Trade? Free agent signing? Settle for Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins?

Any chance that Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers find a way into Steel City next season?

Next up, the sad sack Carolina Panthers.

Sam Darnold laid an egg. Cam Newton looked rejuvenated for a couple of quarters.

The Panthers expressed interest in Deshaun Watson but that never panned out because he's still radioactive. Maybe by next season?

The Detroit Lions and Jared Goff. 3-13-1. Ay caramba!!

The Lions currently have the #1 pick in next year's draft. At least Amon-Ra St. Brown is coming alive for whoever is slingin' next in the near Motorless City.

The Houston Texans.

What does it matter, really? No QB is gonna help that pathetic organization. Maybe Davis Mills (the name of a local shopping mall, as Tony Kornheiser quipped) actually sticks. But probably not because a new coach will likely want a new pivot.

The Seattle Seahawks. Russ says he wants to "explore options," like your girlfriend said in high school just before she broke up with you.

An article on Bleacher Report today cites an anonymous AFC "executive" saying that the team isn't as high on Wilson as most people might think.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10024201-afc-exec-on-russell-wilson-i-dont-think-seahawks-are-as-high-on-qb-as-they-let-on

Could be a case of "You don't want us? Well, we don't want you either!"

So the Seahawks may well be in the market for a QB. Who's a good fit?

My guess is Lions ride Goff another year and see if he improves. He had respectable games towards the end of the season.

Bears have Foles still. Anyone want to trade?

I stand corrected. You are right, the Jags swiped the #1 spot from the lowly Lions.

And, yeah, Foles should get another chance someone next season. I mean...

Carr with 4,800 yards this season, the best of his career, although he has broken the 4,000 yard mark in four straight seasons now. He did it with a below-average receiving corps. Lost Henry Ruggs. Was playing with an injured Darren Waller (or wasn't playing with him due to injury).

But the 23/14 TD-INT ratio was a letdown.

Enter Carson Wentz. He showed flashes of being competent but ended the season by imploding. His starting job with the Colts could be in jeopardy, but he might survive due to this being such a high demand off-season for QBs.

It's kind of dumb Foles is stuck as a third-stringer, especially since he actually won a game last year despite that. He's not really starter-material, but he's definitely a high-end backup and could serve as a decent bridge QB.

Also I absolutely want to see Minshew start somewhere next year. He's the new Ryan Fitzpatrick that we all badly need.

Minshew is wasted talent right now. Sirianni is not inclined to move away from Hurts at the Eagles starter. So hopefully Gardner can be traded somewhere that will give him a shot. He's 26 next season. Still some upside in his career.

Jimmy G is a mystery to me. The 49ers are terrible without him, but are one of the best teams in the NFC when he's in the lineup, even though he is pretty frequently atrocious. Is he a wizard at ball fakes or something? Inspirational half-time speaker? I just don't get it.

A polarizing figure, for sure. I remember hearing recently about his regular season record being really good and he was like 3-1 in playoff games, so I Googled his name to pull up his exact stats and I see two headlines that speak to your POV:

"49ers Carry Garoppolo in Huge Upset"

"Does Jimmy Garoppolo Deserve More Credit for 49ers Deep Playoff Run?"

The latter article starts off like this:

After the 49ers' 13-10 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field Saturday night, Jimmy Garoppolo might deserve more credit. G

Throughout the entire 2021 season, Garoppolo had been in the line of fire from those outside of the 49ers' building. Tight end George Kittle believes the negative attention is misplaced and that the quarterback is more a reason for the team winning than people think.

"Jimmy G. I mean, you can’t say enough about that guy,” Kittle said. “The poo poo that he takes, excuse my language, people consistently try to pull him down and all he does is try to deliver. He leads this team and he is the sense of calm in the huddle, he is the sense of calm in the storm and he allows us to play at a high level.”

BTW, he's 33-14 for his career in the regular season.

Now he's 4-1 in the playoffs

So what about Mr. Rodgers? He spoke with media after yesterday's loss and said he doesn't want to be part of a Packers rebuild, if that's the direction in which the team chooses to move.

https://www.nfl.com/news/aaron-rodgers-on-future-in-green-bay-i-don-t-want-to-be-part-of-a-rebuild-if-i-m

He's not a free agent yet, though. There are some speculating that Aaron wants to become Ben Roethlisberger's successor in Pittsburgh, but it would take a trade to make that happen. The Steelers have plenty of cap space but also some big decisions to make about resigning veteran players.

The Packers are hosed at QB without Rodgers, however. Jordan Love hasn't shown signs of being "that guy." They'll either cling to Rodgers for one more year or maybe land a promising QB through a trade.

The intrigue grows in Green Bay...

Not only might Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams be a package deal, but the timing on whether both will return to the Green Bay Packers could happen almost simultaneously.

While Rodgers originally said he would likely have a decision by the time free agency begins, which is March 16, he offered the possibility that it could be even sooner.

If the Packers are going to use the franchise tag on Adams, the All-Pro receiver, they can do so as early as Feb. 22 but no later than March 8. Rodgers has already said he does not want to be part of a rebuild and likely considers anything without Adams to be just that. And likewise for Adams; he would almost certainly prefer to be able to explore his options if Rodgers doesn't return to the Packers.

And the Rodgers/Broncos rumors persist.

The Denver Broncos quarterback search is underway and while there is plenty of focus on the 2022 NFL Draft, general manager George Paton is reportedly still focused on landing Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.

When reports first surfaced before the 2021 NFL Draft that Rodgers wanted out of Green Bay, the Broncos immediately jumped out as a landing spot. The future Hall of Fame quarterback liked what the Broncos built and there was mutual interest in a pairing. But Green Bay prevented a trade and resolved its differences with Rodgers...

https://sportsnaut.com/denver-broncos-interest-aaron-rodgers-trade/

“Recently, while golfing, John Elway confided to friends that he would personally part with two first-round picks to acquire Rodgers. It is important to note that Elway isn’t the one making the decisions, but he likely has a voice in the process. However, at the end of the day, this is Paton’s show.”

I think he's definitely worth seeing out his fourth year and the cardinals trading him at this point - barring it being for someones top 15 pick would have no answer to who they trot out unless they sign Jameis Winston or Nick Foles.

Down the stretch with an injury and his number one target out he faded I'll grant you, but you don't throw out a QB doing that in his 3rd year - at least I don't think it's a smart move to do so.

Depends on what a team's true agenda is, I suppose. Mariota isn't leading anyone to the Super Bowl, but for the handful of owners in the league who are contact to put a mediocre product on the field and not have to pay too much for it, Mariota could have some appeal. Maybe there's some upside there as well, but it doesn't even have to materialize for some franchises to be satisfied, as long as they're making money.

So Blaine Gabbert is gonna be the guy in TB?

Tampa Bay's head coach Bruce Arians laid the groundwork for that earlier this week. He talked up the 32-year-old veteran's skills while also pointing out why he hasn't had much success in the NFL.

From Tampa Bay Times:

“People may not like the overall record, but Blaine had eight head coaches and eight coordinators his first eight years,” Arians said. “He beat Jacksonville their best year and beat Tennessee their big year for us in Arizona. And he’s been in the system now. I don’t have a problem there and let Kyle continue to grow. Either one. (Gabbert) has never played with a team this good. He’s got all the respect in the locker room that he can have.”

I'd sure as hell be nervous about offering Rodgers a long-term contract -- two years would be ideal -- but he has the Packers by the short and curlies.

The Green Bay Packers have made a significant long-term contract offer to Aaron Rodgers that would alter the quarterback market, a source told ESPN.

Terms of a potential new contract could always change, but a three- or four-year deal would help Green Bay's salary-cap situation while giving Rodgers, 38, contractual clarity well into his 40s.

Green Bay is more than $27 million over the cap just nine days before the start of the new league year. The Packers were expected to offer Rodgers a new deal at some point this offseason, with the dual intention of getting under the salary cap and also providing market-level compensation for the two-time reigning league MVP.

The Broncos also are lurking as a potential contender to land Rodgers, with a source telling ESPN that Denver is willing to compete to acquire him either through a new contract or draft-pick compensation.
