I believe the USMC is rather unique in terms of its actual size compared to most/any other nation that has a defined marine force, though Russia might be relatively close. For places like the UK and the like, their marines mostly trace their lineage back to Age of Sail navies where Marines would be present for ship boarding actions (Better for trained soldiers to board and occasionally conduct landing parties than pull sailors off other important duties). The US didn't really have much of a navy until that time was mostly over, though the Marines did get a few actions in (Including 'The Shores of Tripoli' when dealing with the Barbary States back when the US was a wee baby nation), so they really saw a greater use as actual soldiers, albeit with a bit of a naval specialization. That increased in importance with some of the wars that the US got up to and the increase in overseas holdings and combined with lots of PR they're pretty much a military inside of a military.

For Russia their Naval Infantry got pretty sizable during WWII and got a pretty good reputation then. They existed for a while before that but not to any real strength.

We won't talk about Japan's Naval Infantry history

Marines got their start boarding ships, security for naval landing parties and capturing naval bases. Over the years they have developed into a quick reaction force. They are essentially the Navys Rangers now.
