A current event that went shamefully unnoticed in the July thread- July 25 was the 27th anniversary of the release of Bone Thugs n Harmony's seminal work "E. 1999 Eternal." Released to critical acclaim, the album was in tribute to Eazy-E, who was the executive producer of the album and died four months before its release. The album is notable for featuring bangers like "Tha Crossroads" and this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PArF9k2SbQk Other Current Events Everything still sucks Manchin: still a fuckman but landed on the right side of an issue for once (maybe?) I don't even have an understanding of why Russian propaganda would be spouting that. Do they want another front to be war criming on or something else? I'm probably over thinking their lies in this case but I don't get how.

Current current event: Pelosi is likely to visit Taiwan, which dramatically raises the likelihood of a PRC poo poo-fit of some kind. The likelihood of nuclear hellfire remains low, but has increased significantly since yesterday. https://twitter.com/BonnieGlaser/status/1554160738599669764?s=20&t=oOivHT40yq-Z5U7RaAirGA It's unclear what the admin's take on this is but the most likely reading I've seen is that they told her not to go and she's doing it anyway, so it also suggests some intrademocratic tensions around China.

I'm not a Pelosi fan but seems like the right call would be to visit as scheduled. Would be a terrible look to give into an authoritarian police state's bullying of a democracy to make an important political leader cancel a trip, and a major blow to US prestige as other nations in the region would worry about the US not backing them up. If China uses this as an excuse to invade it was gonna happen anyway.

Mmm yes, lets just blow up a half century of functioning international diplomacy in order to make sure we dont appear to be acknowledging the sovereign status of the PRC that we have continually acknowledged previously. What is the upside here again?

PRC vs. USA is not dictatorships and democracy, it's two world empires facing off like at any point in history before. At some level countries shed dimensions of ideology and just become empires ruled by a imperial nobility. Ideology is for the individuals trying to survive underneath them

Foreign Policy is not Nancy Pelosi's remit, nor is it Congress's. Unless this is an official visit coordinated through the state department, this seems really dumb. It it is official, then it should proceed as planned.

It was a massively successful diplomatic maneuver that allowed us to work with both sides and peel off a USSR ally. All it cost us was officially acknowledging the position of the PRC as the legitimate government of all of China. Unofficially we have maintained robust relations with Taiwan and do a huge amount of trade with them. This had been allowed due to the face saving official policy of the USA with respect to China and the PRC. It's also why Nancy Pelosi doing poo poo like this is not helpful, unless the USA government is seeking to change the status quo, which isn't something we should do lightly. It's uh, very stupid. We don't acknowledge Taiwan as part of China, we acknowledge that both China and Taiwan consider Taiwan as part of China and "hope for a peaceful resolution" or something along those lines. It's the ultimate in diplomatic hair-splitting, but it's important because we're not saying Taiwan is China, we're saying Taiwan considers themselves China... which leaves the ability to change that position if at any time Taiwan decides it doesn't consider themselves China anymore. We do acknowledge the PRC as the sovereign government of China. Edit: this is what creates the famous "strategic ambiguity", our current policy doesn't address what happens if Taiwan declares independence, while at the same time making it clear the current policy is predicated on them not doing so. Dude did you forget Newton as speaker visiting the PRC in 90’s? It’s been a little while since anyone as high ranking as the Speaker has visited the ROC but not 50 years. I’m not sure how this will play out, but I don’t have any dread (yet), we’re not flowing a Carrier Battle Group into the straits with another one in reserve. God I hope we don’t try that poo poo again. I’m convinced that’s how we’re gonna lose our first nuclear navy battle. I’m not stanning the PRC here, but I feel like in 2022 the poo poo we did in 1996 is 100% what they’re prepared to uh… “deter.” If we had another Straits crisis (I think we’d call it the 4th and they’d call it the 5th crisis there…). If Pelosi visiting Taipei is what sends the balloon up, it was going up on its own no matter what we did.
