I'm going to post a "friends wanted" ad on my neighborhood Facebook page. Like many goon suburban dads, I find myself surrounded by neighbors that I just don't share the same values and interests with. I'm in Texas, and I'm just not a huntin' footballin' country music listenin' guy. I'm about to be 43 next week and my main interests are video games, metal music, playing guitar, stand up comedy, and riding my mountain bike. It's been this way for a very long time and I don't see myself changing what I'm into for the remainder of time I have left on this earth. I don't want to give the impression that I'm a sickly computer toucher that shirks at the idea of physical labor, quite the contrary. I'm in a high skilled but squarely blue collar industry; I'll get caked in mud, dirt, and sweat to ultimately use a $10,000 machine and high precision tools to make high speed internet networks possible. The guys that I work with are very much like my neighbors for the most part; and I get along with everyone incredibly well. I just don't really have much in common with them outside of work related stuff. So, I've been thinking about making a post on my neighborhood Facebook / Nextdoor page asking if anyone who is like me if they want to hang out. I like the idea of having someone close by that I can just walk to so I don't have to worry about driving home if we've had a few drinks. Maybe we share an Uber if we hang out somewhere in town. Logistically, it just makes a lot of sense. I'd like some feedback from the hive mind and see what y'all think. Is this a pathetically desperate move that's doomed to fail and be ridiculed by the chuds that usually post there? I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for a long time now and I figure it's time to poo poo or get off the pot; what do I really have to lose?

Yep, book club or another club relevant to your interests. I met a lot of neat folks locally (a few of them even goons!) from a local beer club, for example. I'm sure there may be similar things for mountain biking or guitarificatin'. This kind of puts you in a safe group setting and is a nice low-pressure environment where you can get to know folks. Pre-Covid I was part of a meetup.com gaming / nerd group and had a great time with those folks while it lasted. Unfortunately, the group moved more towards a single and mingle at bars type of thing and that's not my bag. Tonight I'm actually going to a beginner's D&D game that I also found at meetup.com for the first time. I'm not terrible at putting myself out there, I just wanted to do it in a different context.

It's easier to make friends when you're young, so I recommend hanging around high schools and asking if any of the kids want to hang out and listen to music in your garage.

I’d say your first step should be getting out of Texas, OP. As far as I know, everyone in Texas is either a racist gun-toting psychopath, or in imminent danger of being butchered by a racist gun-toting psychopath. Once you’ve surrounded yourself with folks who aren’t racist gun-toting psychopaths or the soon-to-be victims thereof, you’ll probably have an easier time finding normal, healthy friends.

Rocksmith 2014 (not Rocksmith+ that just came out and sucks) has been a wonderful tool to get me to practice more and I highly recommend picking it up for the PC. It allows you to download and play custom made DLC authored by the community. I'm at the point in my playing that I think I'm going to start taking lessons here soon. I'm getting back into it because I had to sell all my gear in 2016, I used to have a bunch of seven strings and stuff like that, this guitar is fantastic for when I just wanna play some metal at any random time. I already took lessons, but that was a long time ago I don't even have a pc for rocksmith, I do everything on my phone.
