 Bocchi the Rock! is an adaptation of the rock band slice-of-life manga by Aki Hamaji. It's directed by talented rookie director Keiichirou Saitou at studio Cloverworks. Nijika Ijichi - Drums A kind, energetic girl who forcefully recruits Hitori into the band. Her older sister runs the live house venue that the band hangs out at.  Ryou Yamada - Bass An introverted but cool and confident girl.  Ikuyo Kita - Vocals/Guitar A popular girl who doesn't know how to play guitar but tries to join the band anyway to get closer to Ryou, whom she has a crush on. There's a famous song from the 1980s called Hitori Bocchi no Christmas Eve (All Alone on Christmas Eve) that popularized the phrase. You may be familiar with this song from its use in Ping Pong The Animation. This got slangify'd into just 'bocchi,' usually with some activity before it. So, for instance, Bocchi Lunch = eating lunch by yourself because you don't have any friends. So this show and Hitori Bocchi are just using the same phrase.

Also shoutouts to the various impressive Dams across Japan. Top-notch cameo choice there. It keeps being said by so many people, but I'll join the chorus with a "I was genuinely not expecting the show about starting a band to be one of the most visually stylish of the year".

The manga likes to open with Album cover homages for each chapter so the anime going the extra mile for some rock homages is super nice. Mop top Bocchi it's okay to have a dalliance with a woman!
