The EU flag was a nice touch. I really hope EU countries put pressure on their leaders to admit Ukraine in to the EU without requiring all the hoops they would have to jump through. It is after all a country that's been through hell and when it gets back from there it'll need help rebuilding and all of Europe needs to chip in.

I get the sentiment but there are good reasons for all of those hoops existing and brute forcing a country into the EU before it meets all of the requirements (press freedoms, legal framework, personal liberties, banking system, anti-corruption measures etc etc) would only make it weaker and more prone to infighting and fracturing than before. Also if you had the option of moving to any EU country and living and working there, or staying in your war-ravaged homeland and trying to rebuild, what option would you take? The free movement of people EU membership enables would gut Ukraine of a huge amount of their ability to rebuild post-war. Also being in the EU is no guarantee of being supported by the EU in desperate times, as Greeks will attest to.

None of this means the EU can't or shouldn't help as much as possible.

Yeah, the rain and cold are an issue for soldiers in the field and while Ukrainian soldiers will have to endure in trenches as well, it's the Russians who get the pressure put on them if they are forced to live in a wet trench for long periods. Ukrainians have better rotation.

Equipment really plays a big part here too. You can quickly end up with a situation where freezing weather on top of rain or wet snow ends up killing everyone who is left outside.

Some WW2 general said that rivers aren't as good a defense as they're made up to be, because even though it's hard to attack over a river, it's even harder to defend along an entire river since rivers are long.

Soviet Union had communal laundromats that would wash everyone's clothes.

There's a funny anecdote about a laundry that scrapped it's machines and got new ones. This was recorded and noticed in the 5 year plan and so every year after that they would have to come up with a laundromat's worth of scrap metal, which they then had to do in addition to washing everyone's clothes.

The biggest problems are heating, cooking and water.

If you just own some water jugs, you can use those and almost any governmant (probably not Russian) can start offering water from tankers after a few days unless you're right on the front lines of a war.

Cooking is harder, but you could use camping gear and make do for quite a while.

Heating is the hard part. Most apartments have minisplits or district heating and those will be out of commission right away. If apartment buildings had fireplaces, you could burn wood to stay warm, but they rarely do. A kerosene heater might work, but those are risky to use and need good ventilation.

Remember when I gab on about Russian rail etc? Yeah hitting that poo poo in some areas could cause weeks of delays because the rails the only way to get the parts to fix the rail to the rail yard.

Ukraine halting Russian society for a day would be a significant morale victory for Ukraine. Hitting a train depot full of trains and preferrably not Russians could essentially cause a hiccup in many necessary things for Russia. Hitting Russia's Petro resources while unlikely to be sanctioned by the US, could really land a serious blow on the siloviki pocket books and immediately shred any hope In Putin.

What would nuking anything accomplish though? Lets say Poot Poot gets all liquored up on deer blood daquiris and decides to level Kyiv and Zelenskyy in one shot. Even if it worked, and ignoring the international repercussions, Ukraine would still keep fighting. Literally notshing will stop the Ukrainians from fighting, and also literally nothing will stop (at least some) western countries from supporting & arming them. Of course Russia couldn't ignore the international repercussions, and they would be dire., things like 'every Russian sub in existence is sunk within 12 hours' or 'Russia no longer has any military airports', let alone the other economical sanctions and trade embargos. It would be reasonable to expect China and India to literally close their borders/embassies in that scenario.

No, Poot Poot isn't going to nuke anything, even as Ukraine pulls down Russia's infrastructure around his diminutive head. If/when Poots dies, it seems far more likely that whatever kleptocrat is managing the nukes will try to sell them to NATO than to use them. IMO when Poots finally dies, there is going to be a brawl that makes Yeltsin shelling the parliament look like a theatre stunt , and whomever comes out standing will be a Kadyrov-level idiot.

As it stands, nobody is overthrowing Poots yet. All of the dudes with enough power/money to want to overthrow Pootie Pie don't have enough incentive yet (as by design, I'm certain). The oligarchs and whatnot certainly are less rich for all of this, but they're still stupid loving rich. And there's quite a bit of incentive for Poots to stay in power + keep pressing the invasion - Russia still thinks it can win. So with that in mind, the only way this really ends is when Ukraine has blown up enough Russian infrastructure that they can't press the attack anymore. To that end, IMO the west should be giving Ukraine significantly more long-range weaponry, because it will actually save lives in the long run.

The interview with the Ukrainian General was very interesting. Two excellent points he had:

1. "Ukraine will only fight for as long as it has support from the US. If that is withdrawn, Ukraine can maybe hold the line, that's it."
2. "Russia has already lost. They know they've lost. Now it's just a matter of bringing this to a close without Putin losing his power. That's the only thing they're worried about now."
