The EU flag was a nice touch. I really hope EU countries put pressure on their leaders to admit Ukraine in to the EU without requiring all the hoops they would have to jump through. It is after all a country that's been through hell and when it gets back from there it'll need help rebuilding and all of Europe needs to chip in.

Ukrainians have better rotation. Equipment really plays a big part here too. You can quickly end up with a situation where freezing weather on top of rain or wet snow ends up killing everyone who is left outside.

At this point I'm completely open to the idea of Russia (or someone in Russia) shooting missiles at Poland just to get a reaction. I mean, they hosed up those gas pipes, didn't they? With accidents, the range of reactions really depends on how much of Russia's poo poo Poland wants to gently caress up. If it's determined to be on purpose, poo poo will get hosed up. However, lobbing just one missile isn't really much of a hit so sounds like an accident and now Poland gets to decide what it's going to do.

At first glance this move doesn't seem very tactically advantageous, but I suppose it does give them control over the mouth of the Dnipro, as the ISW says. Plus, it allows them to attack Russian positions from the side instead of having to cross the river under fire. Let's see how the operation goes. Some WW2 general said that rivers aren't as good a defense as they're made up to be, because even though it's hard to attack over a river, it's even harder to defend along an entire river since rivers are long.

If you just own some water jugs, you can use those and almost any governmant (probably not Russian) can start offering water from tankers after a few days unless you're right on the front lines of a war. Cooking is harder, but you could use camping gear and make do for quite a while. Heating is the hard part. Most apartments have minisplits or district heating and those will be out of commission right away. If apartment buildings had fireplaces, you could burn wood to stay warm, but they rarely do. A kerosene heater might work, but those are risky to use and need good ventilation.

Even if it worked, and ignoring the international repercussions, Ukraine would still keep fighting. Literally notshing will stop the Ukrainians from fighting, and also literally nothing will stop (at least some) western countries from supporting & arming them. Of course Russia couldn't ignore the international repercussions, and they would be dire., things like 'every Russian sub in existence is sunk within 12 hours' or 'Russia no longer has any military airports', let alone the other economical sanctions and trade embargos. It would be reasonable to expect China and India to literally close their borders/embassies in that scenario. The interview with the Ukrainian General was very interesting. Two excellent points he had: 1. "Ukraine will only fight for as long as it has support from the US. If that is withdrawn, Ukraine can maybe hold the line, that's it." 2. "Russia has already lost. They know they've lost. Now it's just a matter of bringing this to a close without Putin losing his power. That's the only thing they're worried about now."
