I was listening to some Christmas music the other day, I really only like to listen to the old classic stuff my parents played around the house growing up. You know, like Burl Ives Holly Jolly Christmas, Chuck Berry's Run Rudolph Run, stuff like that. There's this one album that would get so much play in our house and it never fails to get me in the Christmas spirit, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be on the internet anywhere. Luckily I bought a vinyl copy of it a few years ago so I can still play it but I never knew how obscure it was. It's all hammered dulcimer with some other instruments. The song from it that I remember most is "riu riu chiu" which I actually never knew the name of the song growing up. I only know because of the vinyl that I have that lists the songs. When I'm not being lazy I might upload it to YouTube or something but I'm wondering, what obscure Christmas music do YOU remember growing up?

Christmas music sucks rear end, OP. Don't listen to that poo poo. That said, I learned yesterday while watching football that the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line is releasing a Christmas album and that's sorta rad.

my obscure christmas thing was a cassette tape for babies from pampers, which was called "rudolph the red-nosed reindeer" but most of the songs were weird original songs nobody knew (presumably because for just about every christmas song you have to pay royalties out the rear end to somebody) this was one of the songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTpB5h1ujpk

This song was SUPER popular in Australia in the 80s, my family loved it and I heard it a lot as a kid. I guess it'd be pretty obscure in the rest of the world and probably also for many Australians, it's a relic of a bygone era. Warning: 80s ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af7LwnA913g The album that originally appeared on went quadruple platinum. The singer later released an entire Christmas album of similar material if anyone wants a time capsule of lovely 80s/90s comedy with lashings of swearing and bigotry

so i investigated and managed to find my weird tape on ebay. it came out in 1986 and the songs were by a british company called "songs for children ltd." and all their stuff is on spotify it's not very good, and i can see why my mum didn't want me to put the tape on when i was a kid. i recreated the tape as a spotify playlist -> https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IlI4i8hICfeTOKRWWbBkA?si=ee42edd4048d4629

Unless you grew up in or near Sudbury, Ontario in the 80s you probably wouldn’t know this song that tells the story of a heroic snowmobile that saves Christmas. There’s a write up about the song here https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4944286 And the song itself, Little Skidoo by Bert Collins https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c6YKDPDgSrc&feature=emb_title

For decades I have been looking for a version of The 12 Days of Christmas but instead of "Partridge in a Pear tree", its "a six pack of Falls City beer". Five golden rings is "5 pounds of weed." A Louisville, Kentucky DJ named "Uncle" Ron Clay used to play it all the time on either WRLS or WQMF, hell he may have even recorded it.
