What are your new year's comic book reading resolutions? I've been meaning to get around to get into the IDW Transformers series for a while, and I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet this year. I want to see those big robots smash and crash into each other.

IDW's Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye series (and its sequel, Transformers: Lost Light), both written by James Roberts, are the best Transformers fiction ever, as far as I'm concerned. The art is excellent throughout, and the stories have a little bit of everything -- sci-fi adventure with moments of real drama, comic relief, horror, and even romance.

I bought the Akira box set last year and it’s just been shelf porn. I need to read it this year. I also want to get back to more regular reading of the marvel reading order. It would be cool to reach the 80s at some point.

Also I bought or was gifted a lot of comics over the past month. I will get some photos because there’s some cool stuff.

And randomly: if you’re in Canada check out Chapters, where for some reason one of the Fantagraphics editions of Snow White by Romano Scarpa is in the children’s section and listed for like 6$. My local store has like 20+ copies. I love me that Disney Masters series.

I really wanna upgrade my PC and play a ton of games I have missed, but my comic book reading club eats up all my time!

Gonna read so many DC events this year...

I'm also a nerd and read an X-Men Annual this morning.

This year I vow to borrow more trades/ogns from the library. Also finally read Taylor's Nightwing run because it should (eventually) be available in softcover. Maybe.

If your library offers free Hoopla subscriptions to download comics, e-books, audiobooks, movies, and music, you are in for such a thrill. A lot will depend on how many borrows they allow per month -- my local system allows four, but my parents' Hoopla account through the Miami-Dade Public Library System allows a whopping 20. But Hoopla should have a staggering selection of collected editions and some single issues from all the major publishers.

And yes -- Taylor's Nightwing is on there, and it is one of those comics that lives up to all the hype.

I hope all my favorite indie artists make a stupid amount of money this year.

The project I’m looking forward to the most is Dandy Don Simpson’s unofficial 30 year follow up to the Image Comics 1963 series, titled WHENELSE? and which he’s currently sharing for free on his Facebook page. Watching the project come together from a single pin-up to a 70 page giant that still feels as relevant and topical as ever was something magical.

The Akira box set is really nice. Even so, I will always be jealous of some European countries (I think Germany and Italy) that got fully coloured box sets. I guess Kodansha either couldn't or didn't want to get the rights to the EC coloured pages. It's a shame, but the beautiful artwork still speaks for itself even without colours.

I got back into collecting physical comics again this year after being digital only for years. I've got the Marvel and DC apps, but picking up a bunch of indies at random and liking them all has got me into hunting runs and issues I like, have some kind of meaning to me (40 years of comics and some get sentimental) or hell, I like the covers and want to frame them in my office. I'm collecting for pure fun.

I think my favorite book at the moment is Love Everlasting. King's pretty good at relationship stories imo, and he can't just "Cat" "Bat" over and over here. Great art too. I've also really really enjoyed the new IDW Star Trek series that's essentially a DS9 sequel. Rereading the Darwyn Cooke Parker books right now too. Just good poo poo everywhere lately.

I've got stacks of stuff I picked up after Thanksgiving I haven't made it through yet. (Taking a chance on Gun Honey because I love noir, but God those covers are horny as hell)

I read the first issue of Kamen Rider Zero-One. I don't know why it exists. It's not a retelling or adaptation of the series, I guess it's supposed to be canon, some extra stuff that happened like 10 episodes into the show? But at the same time, they assume most of the people reading it have never seen the show so the entire first issue is dedicated to incredibly clunkily delivering a ton of exposition.

It also introduces a new villain. But, like, Aruto's already fighting Metsuboujinrai.net! And presumably this all takes place before Thouser shows up so he has another villain waiting in the wings. To put a new villain here is so loving weird. Especially one whose main thing apparently is wanting to kill Kamen Riders, when Zero-One is one of the series where the Kamen Rider status is the least significant, or heroic. Half the Kamen Riders in the show are villains! And the big stakes-raising moment is that the new bad guy highjacks Zea. But if you've seen the show, you know another villain does that later. So it's not impressive. And if you haven't seen the show, you were informed about Zea like four panels previously. So it doesn't really have a lot of punch.

Also, a small thing, but Izu seems to have a different pose and facial expression every panel.

Driving myself into raving madness trying to find a copy of Nemesis the Warlock Book 2, Sláine: Grail War and the last four Corto Maltese books I don’t have. I started getting into comics fairly recently and have been mostly reading 2000ad stuff (though I did get the three Aliens Early Years and the Predator Early Years collections which are incredibly good, also have the AvP one on the way which was stupid expensive) and it’s astonishing how loving hard it is to find any of the stuff I really like. I’ve been reduced to ordering 80s printings on ebay because most stuff by Pat Mills and my other faves (Pratt, Oesterheld) are inexplicably completely out of print

This is kind of a frustrating hobby, I love these books so much but they’re absurdly difficult to find and prohibitively expensive

Any other Sláine fans here? I’ve gotten the first twelve books except the 8th one, Grail War, and it’s astonishingly good, way better than any comparable Conan comics. Between that, Third World War, Charley’s War, and Nemesis it feels like Pat Mills is more influential than most people really acknowledge - Warhammer 40k just straight copied almost all of its fundamentals regarding the imperium from Termight in Nemesis
