In previous years, I had to stop looking at the Political Cartoons thread because I just couldn't take it anymore.

I'm curious if I'll be able to make it all the way to December or if this year's going to break me again. :smith:

I assume that the stuff we're actually sending is keyed to a level of "enough that it's useful, not so much that we get upgraded from HELPING UKRAINE to ACTIVE PARTICIPANT which would result in aforementioned spiraling"?

One must keep a low bar with cartoonists that aren't Kelly or Collins of course.

It's basically this. You can't accuse them of hypocrisy because that requires them to be actual hypocrites, which in turn relies on them acting contrary to any sincerely held belief. And they are not. Because the only sincerely held beliefs they have are "nobody should get to tell me what to do," and "I should be allowed to tell others what to do." It feels like there's a whole genre that basically shakes out to "this group of people are loving miserable because we have set their future on fire and their present isn't looking too rosy either, clearly somehow this is their own fault."

Like this is a mental health version of dipshits wringing their hands about job hobbing or "quiet quitting" and don't look at reasons why people might do these things, such as "we are expendable cogs that they will regularly overwork and underpay, and our only reward is being jettisoned at the end of the quarter to make some already rich guy even richer." Or the classic finger wagging about those darn millennial kids (they're mostly in their 30s to 40s now) and their avocado toast or whatever and if they'd stop that they could pay off those college bills and buy a house, because they're still working off a mental model where you could mow lawns for a summer to pay for college, buy a house, start a family, and still have a nest egg for savings and are unable or unwilling to understand that things are different now. Not even worse, which I think they are, just different.

MechaCrash
Jan 1, 2013

Yeah, that's the other thing with the "why are kids turning away from church" hand-wringing bullshit and nobody stops and asks why, and it reminds me of this blog post about the guy who "protested" General Mills by setting a box of Cheerios on fire in front of their office in 2012, the short version of which is "everyone assumed this guy is some flavor of evangelical Christian because he was rabidly homophobic and for no other reason, and it turned out he was, because that's what we are in the public eye, and that's terrible." So of course kids aren't showing up to churches when it feels like all you're going to hear is "and here's why god wants you to poo poo all over this group of people."

About the only thing that's shifted since that article, which let me point out is eleven loving years old, is exactly which group they're freaking the gently caress out over and want to see oppressed and/or eradicated.

The idea that CEOs are watching a number labelled "Minimum wage" slowly going up and once gets high enough they are going to flip a switch and instantly automate everything is hilarious, because it shows just how ignorant these geniuses really are.

They have no idea whatsoever the sheer variety of tasks a human performs in even the simplest job, and each one of these tasks is going to require a separate machine to automate.

And even if companies were willing to automate an entire building, you can't just slap a few machines into a sixty year old building, you have to literally build and design a building from the ground up to automate everything.

And then there's the maintenance , oh boy, the maintenance.

I work in an old rear end warehouse, the only automation we have a a simple conveyor belt that runs through the building, the most complex thing about are the barcode scanners that kick totes off the belt onto different rollers.

And it requires a ton of maintenance to keep it running nearly all day, and even then it still breaks down.
And when it goes down it's down for hours or days.

Unless it truly shits the bed, then it's down for weeks because you have to call in an outside specialist.

Sorry, but McDonalds isn't going to rebuild and automate everyone of their buildings, only to shut them down for a month while waiting for a specialist with specialized training and specialized tools to install a specialized part just because minimum wage went up three dollars an hour.

McDonald's can't even keep a loving ice cream machine working.
