the thing is, is that there are already products doing that

Microsoft Hololens and Google Glass (though that's now dead as of this year, rip)
And for actual job site work they are infinitely more useful because they're AR instead of XR or w/e Apple is calling this headset. All the passthrough/etc stuff is just a fancy way of tarting up 'we put cameras on a VR headset and you can look through it'.

Throwing a bunch of enclosed VR headsets onto guys wandering around an industry jobsite and just trusting that the passthrough cameras are 100% accurate and 100% reliable seems like the kind of thing that would give an OSHA inspector nightmares.

a power brick for that thing is gonna be at least $200 with the price point, plus $50 for the point-to-point extension cable. Guaranteed it uses proprietary power connections.

Apple commodity fetishism requires much higher prices. Take a price a competitor might set then multiply it by five. So closer to $1,000 and $250.

Great.

The price is higher than I expected, but what really surprises me is how dumb it looks for an apple product. It looks uncomfortable and dumb. Google glass at least looked like something a person could wear out and about.

Plus, being an apple product, it probably won't be very easy to hack for one's own uses, it'll be locked into some bullshit that makes it a useless lump of plastic the minute apple loses interest in it.

I really wish AR was a real and convenient thing. Unobtrusive glasses that you can just wear like normal, prescription compatible.

Small things like the auto translate foreign text would be handy I guess, but more practical things I can think of would be:
- process and enhance a snapshot image for those who are hard of sight. That would be great for a lot of people with vision problems
- subtitles for actual conversations. Obviously there's a tonne of difficulties with ambient noise, detecting what to actually subtitle, typo'd words, etc but it would be so good. I'm mostly deaf in my left ear, and a lot of my conversations require me to correlate with some lip reading to understand what's being said. So this would be loving great for me.

You know, poo poo like that? Being able to pull up viable and relevant information, not "check your latest insta comments!" Being able to have a map for navigation when you're lost without having to look down at a phone, etc etc.

Lot of practical uses, but I think instead "porn and recording for views" is what it gets used for.

I mean honestly it sounds like google glass wouldn't of been to far off being able to do most of that stuff. And yeah the hardest part of subtitling conversations would probably actually be in crowded spaces not picking up words from random other people talking loudly, people talking on a TV/music, etc, as the brains pretty good at filtering out noises you don't want to pay attention to. Brain does a poo poo load of filtering of stimuli in general, particularly in crowded/noises situations. With the ever aging population and the elderly having an increasing share of the wealth I wouldn't be surprised if something like that doesn't come out eventually as vision and hearing loss really is pretty common.

You would, um have to make them very easy to use though. Also just having recurring reminders being able to be set up for people about taking their pills, brushing teeth/showing, eating meals, ect. could be super useful for people starting to get memory loss.

Yeah, I mean generally ease of use is gonna be a priority for most devices these days, especially for elderly folks, but I think there's a lot of non elderly people who would love this poo poo.

Hell, I know a dozen people between 20-35 including myself who would kill for that sort of thing. I have to admit, it's why I got excited for Google Glass initially, until it turned out it wasn't what I thought. Even when I was barely out of high school I would have loved a practical aid like that, for clarity, translation, navigation, etc. Not a single thought in my mind about watching a fucken YouTube video or something, but the thought of making the world easier for disabled peeps seemed so close...

And then nah, we got 24/7 recording instead, for fucken reasons :v:

Google Glass was terrible. Entirely incapable of doing anything useful. I had to carry one of those stupid things around for months and report in what I did with it every week.

You know what we discovered it was good for? Nothing! Pure garbage.

I don't think there's any way it could work like you'd want it to with the tech available and at that price. The HoloLens is really what you'd end up with if you try to make an actual AR device.
