reading storm of steel currently, which has been pretty interesting perspective on what daily war life is like, being 1/3 through. mostly how it is really dull except a few moments. are there any other good books, fictional or memoirs, about being a soldier?

also storm of steel's language is pretty fascinating, with the focus on masculinity and individual heroism. not really surprising he became a fascist later on though.

The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors by James D. Hornfischer is pretty good.

It's about the Battle off Samar where a handful of American escort carriers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts had to go up against a Japanese fleet battleships, cruisers, and a LOT more destroyers. Also the battleship Yamato was there.

the thin red line - james jones

forget the movie. do not see the movie. stay away from the movie. read the book.

it's written from experience and there are bits that are def autobiographical. i won't spoil too much if i say jones was on the line for the 'tojo eats poo poo' part and the guy hit by the ricochet incident. his art book 'world war II' is really good too.

also i can recommend cornelius ryan for 'the longest day' and 'a bridge too far' for straight up history stuff

All Quiet on the Western Front is a classic for a reason, it's really good.

i read a rant about how the penguin classics translation of storm of steel takes out all the most fascist bits, but i'm not sure if that's actually true, and if it is true it's probably not deliberate censorship by the translator because junger kept revising the book throughout his life and may have removed passages in later versions. anyway cool book junger is interesting

I've been working through the Aubrey-Maturin series, just started HM Surprise, and once you get used to the narrative style, they're pretty decent

they didn't censor anything. Also yes, Jünger kept editing his book - he expanded the book by 1/3 after all the revisions. Ultimately the 'issue' is that the old English translation is based on the 1923 edition, which is explicitly fascist, while the Penguin one is based on the edition from the 1970s which removed all that. I'm reading it in German so I can't judge the value of the translation, but I prefer the earlier editions. But yes, he's interesting - I want to read his other books.
