I POSTED WHAT NOW!?
I’m a teacher and this year for my film study unit I wanted to do animation. My films would be the Spider-Man movies, but I do want to setup how unique animation can be and how it can get across ideas that just wouldn’t work live action. My idea for a day would be showing a whole bunch of anime openings/endings that have really good/unique animation and pointing that stuff.

With that in mind. Post really awesome and unique OP and ED's. If you just want to dump something in, that's cool. If you want to write up a little about what you think makes the animation add to the OP/ED that would make it easier for me if I like it.

What kind of stuff am I talking about? Let me post some stuff that I think is some of the best stuff.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OifiVCnFKzM Just awesome how they have the character animation within the main character, and then the city animation on its own, combined with the ending bit. Really cool, and I like it because while it's an obvious bit of symbolism, it means it's easy to teach

Tatami Galaxy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkH8ti1gakE mix of live action for background and the character work means you get that cool endless effect but the rotating character bit just wouldn't work live action.

Erased https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fodAJ-1dN3I The constant "film" use and character animation morphing kid to adult. This has a lot of unique effects that just wouldn't work in live action (blood pooling across the screen)

Bleach OP 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wW9TwZdWpjw Use of transition effects, silhouettes to fade into characters, small use of "fast forward" this OP has always kicked rear end for the little things it does

Dr.Stone New World ED 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOlDbKkvmhk I think this stands for itself. Shows how we can convey emotion, and stories using things just like sand. What does reflection look like? Shadows can be the absence of something!

Dr.Stone New World ED 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvVo_gjXMEM Dr.Stone has really awesome ED's! Use of patterns to create character outlines.

Haikyu OP 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBSfI10pXHM Haikyu! Being able to neat poo poo like morph a mountain into an eagle because you want to show off your cheesy symbolism. I'm all for this. (The darkened court lighting up and crows flying out is sick)

I've got a giant list and I can post more if you want to see what I think is worth showing off, but post what you think is awesome here and it could help confirm my list. (Also if you think some western show has a really good OP go ahead and post it)

i really like this ed by how it communicates the personalities of everyone in the class, even the really minor side characters, just by how they move and interact, without dialog and in that kinda abstract style, in just two continuous shots

theres also sort of a story with how the class is fairly disconnected in the first shot but everyone seems much closer and theres way more crossing over between groups and conversations in the second segment

you could probabyl do the two shots thing in live action but the abstraction and the extremely static camera are things i think work better in animation. they're mo capped, but the animators clearly exaggerated the motions, which shows more character.

Arguably better than the show it's attached to, IMO. It's not my favourite ED of all time but it came out of nowhere and really swept things compared to the first season's decent but not exactly unique credits.

It's always gonna be a toss up for me with openings and endings because so much hinges not just upon the song or the animation but also how well they synergize. There's OPs where the animation is rad as hell and I don't care a lick for the song and other times where the song is a banger and the animation is just routine.

Gotta have both.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlBLcLdTYr4
I like this one for what it suggests and then that snap at the end where time stops. It's low key and understated like the rest of the show which makes it stand out among a sea of high energy OPs.

Bochi the Rock's opening/endings fit here as well. Just some great style mixed with really great music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEVhv4eB8Q8

The new Urusei Yatsura show has the unenviable task of living up to one of the classic openings of all time and the mix of new tech with the 80's of the setting really works and makes me wish the show actually used it as a setting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rckYQnPW-wk

Call of the Night/Yofukashi no Uta had a great unique look due it's late night setting and both the opening and ending capture this perfectly

Maybe one day we'll get that Bloom into You season 2 or movie to finish the story but the opening is great/moody

The actual ED from Chainsaw Man the song is featured in is boring and generic as rear end and does it no justice at all, so I'm just gonna post the music video for Fight Song instead because it feels like it's an entire anime season itself in the span of 5 minutes.

I think that's the point. it's an extremely mundane slice of life ending set to an UNBELIEVABLY HYPE song literally titled "FIGHT SONG".

Mob Psycho 100 ED 1

Chainsaw Man E05 ED

Chainsaw Man E09 ED
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giJKMtRnD20
Excellent demonstration of straight-ahead animation.

Really, you're not going to go wrong selecting anything Chainsaw Man because they're all insanely unique and marvelous examples of animation technique and style. Pick your favorite and unpack!

Ranking of Kings OP 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWZAH5w8jkQ
Honestly, just my favorite OP ever. Uhhh, you can talk about the insane use of light/shadow, emulation of first-person perspective, that absolute flex of a lantern animation (and you can further refer to the cage animation in Disney's Pinocchio), and the pros of simple, clear character design. RoK is a powerhouse for excellent character design!

Castlevania OP 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy_FWdbnvM0
I'm counting this because Spencer Wan has worked on numerous "authentic" anime, but fun fact!: The sketchy straight-ahead sequence was his first pass.

Odd Taxi OP 1

Wholly unique! Entirely shape-driven with a jittery liveliness and watercolor and marker texturing. Some very good hold examples and use of limited animation.

Some excellent stuff that I knew I passed over! That Gintama one is gold. BNA is a good choice as well.

Some other ones that’s on my list I figured I’d share

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU_Z8RKo_Ow

Persona 5 anime might be middling, but holy cow did the go all out on that opening. It’s amazingly good. The use of shadows, light, playing with screen use to then mirror characters. No way live action could do this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Of36Qh7WLSQ

It’s not amazing but incredibly effective at what it does. Use of greyscale for the flowers and then bursting into colour at a key moment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM6RhRm2GQM

Kiznaiver OP. The show is poo poo. It’s incredibly bad. That OP is so good though. The song helps, but uses a lot of good CG stuff with traditional animation, love the rotating character bit at the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWxX4S42uK0

I think this one speaks for itself. I remember the show being very mid, but this is a fantastic OP.

Magical Destroyers
as far as I could tell (I only got 4-5 episodes in), Magical Destroyers is just straight up kusoanime. But the opening rules. It pulls off in a minute and a half what the show itself can't do: explore the idea of otaku culture as a parasocial relationship with people who don't actually exist in "this" reality. There's a sort of loose playfulness to a lot of the character animation, but it contrasts with some very lovingly-rendered sequences (the fish in the cup of water, the really impressive film-tearing animation). The environments are weirdly evocative for how simple and sparse they are. And then it goes into the sprawling chaos of internet glitchcore and ends with Midsommar-esque imagery. Freaking rules imo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaHP_yjEb4E

Maria+Holic
Another kusoanime with great op/ed. Gekidan Inu Curry's digital collage style is so special. The OP is also very unique but is such a shitpost that I kind of don't want to include it lol.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRo1uK2NILo

Honey & Clover
This one really speaks for itself. Shoutouts to how absolutely horrible and disgusting some of the food art is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46YfUjm5zBI

Ef - a Tale of Memories
one of my favorite openings of all time. It really picks up at 45 seconds--the combination of the characters dissolving, the prose backgrounds, and the clothing animation is just so cool. The extended hand filled with text is really great.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05fbwE5RMSs

Revolutionary Girl Utena
This ending sequence is just so bold, comes out of the gate running. The extremely narrow vertical framing is so stylish, and it conveys the idea of omission and censorship that the show deals with. While also depicting a gay kiss on screen in the mid-90s! And then there's that animation where the frame widens to Anthy's skirt billowing. Just so cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DGOKiPqMWI

Sarazanmai
This is pretty restrained in its scope, but I love the live action/animation combo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWY2y4D1Qks

Hidamari Sketch
I have a huge soft spot for the first ending of Hidamari Sketch. It's strangely affecting for how much of it is just like, graphic design shapes against solid colors. I think the thing that really impresses me with it is the key sequence where Yunochi is set against a blue sky and there's a profile closeup of her face. It's a very like, Evangelion kind of shot, so it feels very surprising to see it with this little sugar muffin of a character in a cute-girls-cute-things show. But that scene, along with the pixelated bird flying right after it, actually is very evocative of her character, since the show is very much about her growing up and learning to manage everyday life. I guess what makes this ed stand out to me is that it takes the character seriously enough to portray her mental state in a symbolic and psychological way, even though it's a very mundane and lighthearted show. I like that contrast.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LReEWyE6sCI

Turn A Gundam
The sequence of Loran equipping his normal suit, and the sequence of the Princess reaching her hand up to Loran's. Doing them as tracking shots is so cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccTGW5ckxeQ

.hack//SIGN
This opening is such a banger. The timing and storyboard are really solid, and the aesthetic of fantasy characters mixed with internet-era tech is so great. The dancing rules. The sequence of the characters' clothes dissolving as they rapturously dive deeper into virtual reality always stood out to me as inspired.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOdFxTC8ZQ

King Gainer
This animation really speaks for itself. But the main chara equipping for combat, the ridiculously gorgeous figure skating, and the psychedelic monkey dance. I mean... Come on.

the ED is really affecting to me, too. I think it was the first time I had ever heard music like it in my childhood, when it aired on Toonami. It's one of the strangely wonderful things about dot hack sign, how warm and alive the soundtrack is for an anime about people idling around in an online game. Just listening to the track takes me back to being little and feeling a sense of wonder at how animation can transport you to another world. For me, the great soundtrack is enough to put .hack//SIGN along side other really meaningful fantasy anime from that era for me, like Haibane Renmei and Kino's Journey. (I mostly just didn't include the ED in my list because the animation itself--while cool--isn't quite as interesting or compelling as the opening animation is, imo)

Well, I did the first part today! …and I have to scrap the second! That should give an idea of how it went. Overall, most students engaged okay, the few that I knew wouldn’t, didn’t but there was some good responses at times. The Gintama OP comparison went over really well, they found the MS paint thing funny. I did a comparison of live action Bebop OP to the cartoon and it was fun to see them talk about the differences and how some preferred the anime OP because the actions came off as was originally intended vs the live action looking unnatural or just not able to replicate what anime could pull off.

I teach at a very conservative school, and I showed the Birdy the Mighty Decode S2 OP. Easy way to see use of contrasting colour schemes (red/blue) except there was a comment about her outfit being incredibly inappropriate. I know it’s a bit revealing but didn’t think it was incredibly offensive, no worse than a swimsuit. Well, parent popped on over and had a chat with me about it as well and how I should be squeaky clean and whatnot. I pushed back on some things, especially that they were pissed I spent a month on animation (I spend a month on everything else, Speech, Novel, Shakespeare).

I mean, I spent an entire course on animation in University.

I showed the offending video to my principal and he was baffled it was an issue. Which was nice someone was on my side of it.

I didn’t want to push ahead the second half of it especially as I don’t want to face angry parents and so slapped together some other activity that’s still relevant. Try again next year. I honestly think the problem is that some parents saw some borderline hentai thing and basically slapped it all with the same brush. It’s like saying all magazines are bad because Playboy exists.

Part of me wants to quit, but I also have really good job security and the staff likes me, and the parents do appreciate I push writing skills.

I've decided that I like EDs better than OPs because, at least in my view, EDs have far more variety than OPs. OPs tend to fall into that "anthem" structure with their music. Everyone's seen the twitter post talking about how anime OPs follow a similar musical structure and there's the "Every anime opening ever" video from forever ago about shared visual similarities across hundreds if not thousands of shows. Even as different as many OP songs can be after a while you notice the patterns.

The second Konosuba OP is probably the best one I've seen in terms of pure storytelling. The entire thing is a mini-episode complete with full characterization of the party members and a dozen great visual gags.

If you're wondering whether someone will actually like Konosuba, just show them the creditless version of the 2nd OP and they should be able to know whether they'd dig it or not.

Perhaps not a "unique" OP but definitely a great one that feels like a classic in the making. The fact that it's diagetic is also a hilarious positive.

maybe this isn't quite what you're going for, but the US TV OP for "Mobile Suit Gundam" shows how you can create a totally different, and vastly more dynamic, intro for a series that actually includes the action and main characters, even if the underlying footage itself is rather primative by modern standards:

Compare the original, which, while a whole minute longer is mostly just drawings of the main characters and robots on generic type backgrounds:

The original MSG intro gives less of a feel for what the show is frankly than the original 1960s "Speed Racer" intro, which at least included some amount of the cross country driving with lots of enemies in silly costumes that actually makes up the bulk of the show. And MSG was made over decade after that!

Yeah the original Gundam op and theme feel out of place and like more fitting for a Super Robot show than what Gundam was . Feels very much like it was for the toy company sponsor than anything else

POWERFUL FUNGAL LORD

I don't know a lot about animation, but some (family friendly--I love the first SZS opening but it definitely wouldn't fly in a conservative school) ones I like are:

Idol - Oshi no Ko s1 - The animation is really pretty and I think it shows off the characters in an interesting way.
Irregular Entropy - Higurashi Gou ed2. It's one big painting! I like how the falling, rotating chandelier at the start and end reflects the Wheel of Samsara, the cyclical nature of the plot and its themes. I really like all the Higurashi OP/EDs but they have a tendency towards gore and/or skimpily dressed girls, so...
Sakasama no Chou - Hell Girl OP1 - It's probably largely nostalgia talking, but I like the strong contrast between the grounded vibe of the OP and the actual contents of the show (supernatural horror). I could only find this uprezzed version, though.
