:pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn: :pwn:

We are back! For a weird second half of the season. The schedule is wonky, with two eps at the end of January and one at the start of February, then most of the month is dark, then one ep at end of February and two at start of March, and so on through April. So get used to that. The February 3 lineup has yet to be announced, I will hopefully get a mod to update the thread title when we know more.

We're kicking off the year with Jacob Elordi, who is "babygirl" and "daddy" according to all the young people who hang out with me, and Renee Rapp, an actor and singer who is starring in the Mean Girls musical film. Elordi is known for his roles in the show Euphoria and the new film Saltburn.

"I NEED PROMOS" I hear you saying. That is most fortunate, for I just happen to have many such promos!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upIlLPi4z5k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z18KNoXf4jI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeXFYOSOYUc

And some air-only promos/variants I captured. An exclusive Thursday promo, a much better, shorter edit of the Steps promo, and the "Next week" variant of hype promo. Promo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlLs4om4DG4

"Ok i'm good on promos, guy. What I really need, now, is the photos from Wednesday read-through, and I don't have time to go find them on Twitter." Well... actually, I have those, too. How fortunate! This has worked out really well.

Rosalind O'Connor is the photographer who shoots these BtS shots and it looks like she just got a fisheye lens for Christmas. Good to see her mixing it up though! The long shots are nice but these are real cool.

Big huge thanks to @memesistential on Twitter for gathering those last bits from individual cast members' socials, he is doing the lord's work from Korea.

And tonight is a big night! A big historic night. Two firsts in Vintage: The first Vintage from the current live season, and the first Vintage which is the previous live show. Yea it's Kate McKinnon and Ellie Beyelash, from December 16 2023. Long-memories regulars may remember, that in S38 and 39, NBC was running edited 60-minute cuts of the previous week's episodes in the same time slot.

quote:

NBC has quietly started airing the previous week's episode of SNL, edited from 90 minutes down to an hour, on Saturdays at 10/9c. The repeat doesn't attract a large audience, averaging just 2.3 million viewers on Feb. 23 (featuring guest host Christoph Waltz and musical guest Alabama Shakes). But it still managed to tie ABC (which ran the movie Dreamgirls) and CBS (a Vanity Fair Hollywood special) for No. 1 among adults 18-49 in its second half-hour.

NBC had previously been running mostly Law & Order: SVU repeats on Saturdays at 10. But Saturday has become such a dead zone for the networks that running a repurposed SNL makes more economic and ratings sense than airing a repeat of a scripted series. That's because the license fee structure and residual payments are much lower for an SNL repeat than they are for a scripted primetime rerun. (Drama encores, along with sports, theatrical movies and newsmagazines, have become the standard Saturday night fare at the networks).

"It's not crazy," says one rival programmer. "[NBC] has always been pretty good about mining SNL for repurposed material. I guess this is just a continuation of that. It does make me wonder if that's too much SNL in a pretty small window."

NBC has occasionally aired SNL Weekend Update specials on Thursday nights, and a number of primetime SNL holiday-themed and best-of specials remain a part of the network's arsenal. But this is the first time in decades that SNL episodes were given a weekly primetime berth. (Edited reruns, dubbed The Best of Saturday Night Live, aired in primetime during another rough patch in NBC history, its low-rated 1979-80 TV season.)

This isn't NBC's only Saturday-night experiment. At 8pm, it airs a one-hour version of American Ninja Warrior, culled from three hours that aired weekly last summer (two hours on G4, one on NBC), plus bonus content.

The SNL and Ninja Warrior scheduling is a creative way to offer something different from a drama repeat, but still a far cry from the days when Saturday truly mattered to the networks. In the 1970s and '80s, it was one of the most-watched nights of the week, thanks to programs like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Love Boat and The Golden Girls. By 2004, all of the networks had stopped airing first-run scripted series on the night.

Given NBC's ratings collapse this winter, Saturday is hardly a priority: The Peacock is bleeding throughout the week. But the Saturday moves are an easy way to at least drive a few more viewers to the 11:30pm airing of Saturday Night Live. Here's how important the first-run SNL is: it now posts higher ratings than all of NBC's primetime comedies. NBC insiders say the 10 p.m. repeat - which is edited with the approval of executive producer Lorne Michaels - drives viewers to the 11:30 p.m. original.

This Saturday (March 2) NBC will air an SNL repeat with host Louis C.K. and musical guest Fun. at 10/9c, followed by an all-new episode at 11:30/10:30c with host Kevin Hart and musical guests Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

https://www.sj-r.com/story/entertainment/television/2013/03/01/nbc-brings-saturday-night-live/64236723007/

I actually can't remember exactly when those reruns ended, though I'm pretty sure it was in S39. I do remember Lorne pulling the plug because he felt they were diluting the excitement for the night's live, new show. In S40 they began the Vintage branding and, for a couple years at least, consistently ran old episodes. But it's all come full circle, as we are now back to the previous live show.

EDIT: UPDATE: WEEKEND:

Is Vintage officially over? Or just on a break? Who knows, cares?

Well, that's it. I hope that I have once again slaked you jackals for another week. Enjoy!

The PDD guys have, to some extent at least, demonstrated their chops. But that nepotism poo poo isn't imaginary, and you'd be foolish to think otherwise. Getting a seat on the floor with heavy hitters like Murphy and Lovitz when you have done (checks notes) zero for the show sure is a plus when your dad is a producer.

JAJ's Trump is a great technical impression, but it feels like the writers don't really know what to do with it beyond "hey, this guy sure likes to ramble a lot".

Also, it's a bit weird when the parody version of Trump sounds more coherent and polished than the actual Trump.

I skipped the Trump poo poo, sick of their softballs. In some ways I blame SNL for promoting this rear end in a top hat for decades.

This episode in general was much worse than usual. SNL is at its absolute worst when all they can think of for the guest are "omg they're hot." They are predictable skits that aren't funny, the joke of people being unusually attracted to someone is really one note, but they went for it like 5 different skits. Guy also didn't seem like a great actor and I'd never heard of him before so the acting class skit fell doubly apart. It also doesn't help he looks like Gave from the office instead of a conventionally attractive actor man. They've had way more attractive men on the show and managed to make comedy with them not based on how they look, but I guess those people were also more talented and interesting.

Bowling Alley was the highlight but he wasn't great in it.

I skipped the musical guest segments this week, so I was super confused when Rachael McAdams showed up for the acting sketch. Like, I new of the connection with Renee Rapp, but didn't see why they would use McAdams in a sketch without her.

Then I googled it and realized I was dumb.

I didn't know a connection, is it just that they both played Regina George?

Yeah, that's it. But her being there with Rapp is basically a "blessing" kind of thing, which is why she introduced her for the second number.

Like, McAdams didn't participate in that Mean Girls reunion that everyone else did for a Walmart commercial last year (and why would she?), but she did this for Rapp.

Yeah, someone else mentioned it, but it's clear they felt like all they had to work with was "Elordi is tall and hot".

This bit seems more like it's intended to show off Jimmy Fallon's Barry Gibb impersonation. I think Dakota only had like two lines; definitely a "no faith in the host" sketch.
