Hello yes I heard there was a lovely trainwreck here and...

Hendrick

Somehow, a little green light seems to appear in the middle of the cord shaping itself like a Y. It was odd, impossible to tell whether it was near the floor or near the cord, but that didn't matter; while Hendrick had been perplexed by everything that was going on, now he had the right associations to make sense of it all.

The Y was for YES to Maeby's question. Maeby got stressed by emotion and ran out of the room due to Audrey's spirit being disconnected from her body. Of course.

He slapped his forehead in annoyance. What this Liam had to do with Audrey's current state, or how he could help besides the obvious, was still a mystery but at least he could move on. He immediately went looking for Brian to get info on Liam.

To Simon

On hearing the noise, the kid looks at you, wiping his hands onto his trousers thoughtfully, then shrugs. "Are you hungry? I'm hungry". The fact that he seems to have been snacking on candy just until this very moment doesn't seem to factor onto his comment.

The cat seems to echo this sentiment: he comes down to where you are and rubs himself against his owner's back, still looking at you.

You make your way down to one of the lower branches of the tree, followed by the both of them. Then, you hold onto the branch with both hands and then slide forward carefully, letting yourself hang down from it. It's a bit of a fall, but not one you've not taken before. You brace yourself, take a bit of impulse and let go, cleanly landing on the grass underneath the tree with a loud thumping noise.

As Miu buzzes disapprovingly around your head, chiding danger warnings at you, you see Chris carefully hold onto the trunk and climb down, with an agility you wouldn't expect of a pudgy small kid, followed by Neko, who leaps down with a jump not unlike yours. Chris takes off his school backpack and opens it, and you see the cat quickly slide inside it. He then puts it back, with the cat's head out and curiously looking around. Satisfied, the kid looks back at you.

To Hendrick

As Maeby storms out, a startled-looking Brian turns back to follow her with his gaze, but you notice that he doesn't leave the room.

"What... is she all right...?" you hear him ask in the background, but you don't concern yourself too much with his worries. Something bigger is at stake here. You point at the bracelet and ask him about Liam. He seems to go even a bit paler, if that's possible.

"Liam... was the kid" he eventually mumbles. "Her son. She had him before she arrived here, but..."

You arch an eyebrow. There's clearly no baby stuff in the room, and the man isn't making much sense.

"... she wouldn't come out one morning, and we opened the room, and she was like that, and the kid..." he stops for a second, as if collecting himself. "We called the police, but... the security cameras had nothing, no one had seen anything, and she was... well, she was like that. They didn't... they still haven't found him"

You look up following his gestures. There is a small slit window at the top of the room, which probably goes out around ground level outside. It seems to open upwards, enough for a slight breeze to come in, and definitely not for a person, no matter how small. Brian notices you looking, and nods.

"Yes. I know. It's dumb. And yet, we found it open, rain was coming in, the floor was all wet. She would have never left it open. She was... she really cared for Liam..."

Hendrick nods at what Brian is telling him. It wasn't stupid, not really; not with what he's seen at any rate. He writes his number down on a small sticky note and hands it to Brian.

"Text me at this number if anything changes with her. I'll do my best to try and track down Liam and his kidnapper, I've got a feeling it's connected to the original death somehow."

He then checks the window and everywhere that would make sense for something stealing a baby from the woman and leaving, and then heads outside the hotel to where the window must be to check around there for as much information as he can get.

Rolled a 9 to investigating a mystery. Obviously something took the baby, where did it go?

To Hendrick

You carefully inspect the room. Nothing much catching your attention: there are faint, dark mold marks on the floor, probably consequence of the small flood Brian mentioned. At your request, he takes a folding cot with some baby stuff out of the wardrobe, and you notice there is a bit of mud on the edge, as if something wet and dirty had touched it. No blood anywhere, you note, which is a bit of a relief.

Inspecting the outside doesn't tell you much. It opens out to the right side of the hotel, and there is a path around, but if there were any clues this side, they've since then been cleaned up. You kneel and check the window opening: you can fit your arm there, but not much else, and definitely can't sneak in. You have your doubts that even a child could fit, though a baby probably could - and did. It's a tight opening, and it's also a jump from there. On closer inspection, there is some mud here too.

Speaking of children, a small voice chittering interrupts your thoughts. You turn in its direction and notice Simon talking to a small kid.

You confusedly hold onto Maeby, muttering some comforting words as she recomposes herself. It takes a bit for her to calm down, but it seems to end up working. You can make up a repeated name from her mumbling: Liam.

Regarding the boy in mild surprise, Simon returns a swift nod of acceptance before he can even think it out. It seems his stomach is dictating his decisions this morning.

He smiles in amusement at Neko's cozy backpack ride, and Miu retreats likewise into her preferred nest of hair. As Chris sets off toward his grandma's house, his cheerful chatter passes the time. Simon wonders if he will perhaps glean information about the incidents, if by any chance the woman is part of the town gossip circle. After all, strange news travels fast.

To Simon

You follow the kid down the hill and into the town. He only seems to vacillate a little when you both cross the bridge over the river, and you notice him speeding up and not looking down. Otherwise, he's a chatterbox, though much of what he's saying seems to be mostly about birds: what birds live in which trees, and which birds have nests, and how many eggs on each nest, and how many of them have already hatched and did you know there is a crow nest way up in the hill and he's never seen a crow before and he climbed up to it and it was really up high but the crow mom got angry and he had to speed down and almost fell and scraped his knees but there's at least two eggs and they are green and green is a cool color and there aren't many green eggs around and there'll be little crows soon and he'll be back to see them and...

... you notice you are venturing a bit out of the town, now. You've been walking for a bit, but the usual row of houses has turned onto fields again. You can still see some scattered houses here and there, but they seem a bit far away. Before you can question it, though, you cross by a row of buildings and arrive at what seems to be another street running onto the forest, this time around the hill. Chris guides you to a particularly big house at the end of the row.

"Home" he says, and runs up to it, ringing the bell. You can smell food inside, and your stomach growls a bit in turn. After a few seconds, a diminute old lady with her hair up in a bun opens the door, and Chris jumps to hug her, almost making her fall to the ground.

"Where were you?" she chides, but you notice her smiling. "Again chasing birds? What about breakfast? Come on, you little..."

She seems to notice you. "Oh. And you are?"

"Simon" Chris says, enthusiatically, as the cat slinks out of the backpack and into the house. "Grandma, he is FRIEND" he remarks, with unexpected eagerness. "He does not talk. He wants breakfast too"

She looks at you over her glasses, but she doesn't seem to question her grandson. "Hope he hasn't bothered you much" she says. "Come on in"

She guides you through the house; it's old, full of sturdy-looking furniture, and it smells old, if that's a smell, and also vaguely of tobacco. You arrive at a big kitchen, with a solid wooden table in the middle, where Chris is already seated, expectant. So is Neko, who is watching the scene from behind the table.

"Coffee? Pancakes?" she asks you. "We have cream too. And strawberries, maybe. Chris, did you eat all of them...?" The boy shakes his head, as if offended by the mere thought.

Simon nods in vigorous acceptance of the coffee and pancakes with everything on top. He clasps his hands together in gratitude, flashing a grin at the elderly lady as she bustles around to prepare breakfast. His eyes wander across the kitchen walls, and he is reminded that the wallpaper is vaguely similar to how his mum had decorated their house, when his parents were still alive. The scent of lovingly cooked food is something increasingly rare to him these days, and he inhales the nostalgia with a bittersweet smile. Turning to Chris, Simon asks the most important question he's thought of all morning: Do you eat pancakes here every day!?

To Simon

"Nana does them" you get, as a pretty obvious answer mumbled through a happily full mouth. "I love pancakes"

As the lady finishes serving, she pours a bowl of milk and, somewhat strangely, puts it onto the table, near an empty chair. The, she puts a pancake aside for herself and sits by your side. Neko immediately jumps onto the chair, puts his front paws on the table and starts greedily licking the milk bowl, in that cat way that implies food might disappear at any moment and therefore is better eaten right now.

"Sorry, did I introduce myself? I'm Yuko. He's my grandson, Chris. He is here for spring break" the lady tells you. "Are you from around here? I don't get out much as of late..."

"Nana, he DOES NOT TALK" Chris interrupts, in an indignant raised voice, as if offended she's forgotten that clearly important fact already. He gets shushed in return.

"Lower your voice, you're going to wake up grandpa" she scolds him, then gets up and starts rummaging on a basket by the counter that seems to be full of small knicknacks. "Sorry. I think there was a pencil here... Chris, be a good boy and get your friend a notebook, please" The boy reluctantly gets up and runs off somewhere.

As you get left on your own for a minute to concentrate in the pile of pancakes in front of you, your hunter observation instincts seem to ping you a bit. You stare straight at the drinking cat - more exactly, at its tail, hanging low by the back of the chair. All two of them, in fact.

Without stopping his breakfast, the cat returns your look with a stare, as if daring you to say anything. You don't have too long to wonder, though, as a sticky hand pushes a school notebook and a slightly munched pencil onto yours. His mission clearly accomplished, Chris flashes you a smile and goes back to his seat.

You can roll Investigate if you want to try and see how much exactly Simon has noticed.

Two... tails? Simon furrows his brow, observing the unusual feline, but without letting on that he's noticed the second tail. In fact, Neko looks very well cared for.

Yuko squints a bit to read your answers, and then turns back to Chris with a sigh. "Chris, were you climbing up trees again? What did I tell you? I swear, you're gonna ruin those trousers too"

The boy makes a small frown at her in turn, but says nothing. He seems to also have read your answers, because he in turn interrogates you. "What do you do? Do you work at the hotel?"

You are pretty sure of what you're seeing - less so of what it means. The cat definitely looks happy and plumpy, but in further inspection, also looks like a very old male. You don't get a malevolent feeling out of him, in principle, though nekomata mythos are... less than reassuring in that respect.

You rack your memory for further stuff; there was some legend or another about them talking to the dead and spirits, adopting human form, and then... walking on two legs and speaking human languages? Yeah, that's probably it. It makes sense, anyway.

To Ray, Leo and Maeby

After comforting Maeby back to the world of the living, and making sure she's doing well, you all get up and head out of the dining room, ready to tackle the day.

Ray checks his phone, and notices his informants have done their work - there might be a dealer of Blood of the Mountain around, if you'd manage to track it down. It's not surprising, given its potent hallucinogen properties, that someone looking to do a quick buck would look for a holiday location as a potential market. You do get a location, but no name or any other contact information. Not surprising.

On the other hand, there is the matter of Sally Martins, and what she does know about a dead bloodless man in the woods.

As you all walk out, you notice Hendrick, who seems to be absort on inspecting something or other outside.

Where to? Also, any rolls?

To Hendrick

Before you can call to Simon, you see him walk away with the boy, and sigh in exhasperation. Sure, go around walking alone on a place where someone has been attacked already, why not?

The familiar sound of the others walking out interrupts your thoughts. It seems like breakfast has finished.

You have a choice: either follow Simon from a distance, rejoin the group, or, well, go solo.

Sighing, you decide to follow the kid and your colleague from a distance. You also notice he seems to be wearing shorts and a shirt, as if he'd just got out of bed, and is definitely not carrying his rifle at the very least. You instinctively clinch onto one of the throwing knives hidden inside your coat, just in case.

What a fool. Seriously.

The way the path they are taking seems to go off the city and into the fields does little to appraise your suspicions. You follow them mechanically, but they don't seem to notice or care for you at all. You allow yourself to fall down on your thoughts as you walk through the empty fields.

After a brief moment of deliberation, Ray points towards the direction of Sally's house, and the three of you set in motion. Ray does notice Hendrick taking off at a brisk pace, and before any of you can call out, he's disappeared into the treeline.

You all get on the van and drive down the hill on his tracks, but see no sign of him anywhere, not even after crossing the bridge; the street is pretty populated at this hour, and he seems to have gone down some alley or another. Nor, now that you think about, have you seen Simon in a good while, either.

The streets by this side seem to be peatonal. Ray takes the van to a parking spot on the main square, by the police building, and the three of you continue on foot. Leo and Maeby follow Ray on turning right and towards a second, older looking, bridge. Before you all can reach it, he makes a stop sign, and the three of you stop in the middle of the street.

To Ray

You may not be particularly fine today - ghost encounters, crying teammates, all of it is taking a bit of a toll on your mood. But you are still sharp enough to keep your eyes and ears peeled while on the job, and you just heard someone call the name of Sally. You quickly gesture at the others to stop as you scan your surroundings, landing on a young couple walking just in front of you. She definitely seems to match the vague description police gave you - long hair, thin and tall, though you're sure half the women in town match it too. He's also a tall, muscular looking dude. He's definitely called her Sally, and the two of them seem to be having an argument as they walk, but you are too far away right now to make out what they are saying.

Maeby

Overhearing this argument between Sally and this mysterious man presses a firm finger on a sore spot in Maeby's consciousness. For all she knows, she is arguing to dip all puppies into acid vats and this man is trying to dissuade her, but at this distance the tone and volume of his voice is more grating than sandpaper.

But it's when she looks to Ray that she sees something almost philosophical burning in his eyes. Perhaps the expression he is making right now is an impression he once practiced in a mirror, but if so the practice paid off. Maybe it's chauvinism to leave it in his charge, but fight fire with fire right?

She pulls herself back, and reasons that she should be leaning into her skill set: trying to find drugs.

You've got this tiger, she says with a pat to his back, and heads off to walk downtown. She makes sure to communicate it's for a good purpose with double thumbs up.

First things first, she pops into the first gas station she sees to pick up her tools. These are a pack of wrapping papers, some tobacco, and a lighter with a tacky design. After that savings account wiping purchase, she starts wandering the streets in search of her northern star of scoring, that being little old baby boomer ladies for whom the summer of love has lasted their entire lives. On TV your average drug dealer is a burly man with a leather jacket and dark sunglasses to hide his darting eyes, but the drug dealing industry is one that relies on discretion. Who would suspect a sweet woman in the twilight of her life to be distributing? Certainly not cops. The lady who sold her the acid tab that changed her life was a grandmother named Rose who was able to save up and buy a house just by selling grilled cheeses out of the back of a van at concerts. She likes Rose but the thought still makes her shake her head.

And so that's what Maeby is searching for, someone with gray hair, a tie die dress and earrings that you can hear jangling from across the street. She will offer to share a spliff, get real friendly, and try to make a deal.

As Maeby departs Ray nods toward Leo, indicating the couple with a glance. "Let's walk; just nice and natural. Otherwise just follow my lead if I start talking." Ray then proceeds to do exactly that, keeping a pace that isn't brisk, but still a step faster than the two that he's looking to trail.

Ray may have a presence able to fill a whole room by himself, but his ability to pass by unnoticed as he slowly navigates the crowd of moms with kids, elders and young people chilling in the April sun doesn't pass unnoticed to Leo - he's suitably impressed by a skillset that's probably born of continued practice, more than anything else. He keeps up with Ray's smalltalk as the two of you position yourselves alongside the couple and tune in to their conversation.

"I was worried, Sally. Why didn't you..." the man is saying, in a louder tone than he seems to think. She, in turn, doesn't raise her voice.

"And I tell you, I slipped, got mud everywhere. It was just that. Just needed a hot shower, why is that so hard..." she sounds a bit exasperated, as if she can't wait for the conversation to be over.

"But why didn't you call" he complains back. "I was waiting for over an hour. An hour, in the cold"

"It was before I met you" she says at him, still smiling and without missing a heartbeat. "And also, what made you think we are exclusive?"

The guy says nothing, but turns a bit red and goes away in a huff. "Good riddance" She says, apparently uninterested. "Are you new in town, dearie? Do you have anything to do? I can give you a tour of the place"

To Ray

You're still a bit stunned at the speed with which Leo has taken control of the situation. He is definitely a manly guy, some would call him attractive, but from the girl's reaction, you'd think he is the protagonist of a particularly corny shoujo. That was impressive.

You keep your position and watch the man angrily retreating, wondering if you should try your luck interrogating him, or keep watching Leo's soft pickup artist moves.

Leo

Did she just....call me dearie? Is this a 70 year old grandma in a young woman's body?

"We're finding our way around pretty well I think. When was the last time you hooked up with Kyle, or K.W, and did he seem, you know...normal? Troubled by anything? I'm sure you weren't really doing any therapy sessions, just wondering if he said anything you found interesting or odd."

Ray

Ray grumbles a bit. So far today was involving both emotions and exercise, and he was a fan of neither. With as little fanfare as possible Ray breaks off and begins tailing after the man who had been with Sally, quickly whipping out his phone to send a brief text to Leo.

To Leo: "Do NOT go off alone with her! Wait for backup!" - for as impressive as Leo's pickup game was, 'subtlety' and 'tactics' might need to be topics for a later discussion. Ray quickened his pace, waiting until both he and the man were still within eyesight, but not hearing range, of Leo and Sally.

"Excuse me, sir? Sir?" Ray calls out after the man, hoping to catch his attention. "I'm sorry to bother you, but my name is James Buffet - I'm an outreach specialist with the dating app Slidr. I believe you recently became a member of our community?"

To Leo

You feel your phone buzzing in your pocket as Sally answers your question.

"Oh, like two weeks ago" she says, pensatively, before lowering her voice a bit. "He came and went. Between us, he wasn't too interesting. A bit childish. But he knew what he wanted. It was refreshing, in a way"

You get the impression that, under her friendliness, she's studying you intently.

"I've never seen you around, are you new here?" She asks in return. "Do you have a friend with you? I live right down the street, if you want to talk more privately"

Chris's interjection piques Simon's interest. Intrigued, he writes:

Managing an apologetic smile to Yuko, he adds hastily:

I'm curious about what he thinks looked like a ghost. It's probably nothing.

It doesn't seem like the elderly woman cares too much, but Simon takes precautions not to set off any alarms. Neko hasn't returned, and Simon has a mind to ask Chris a bit more about the cat later.

You put on your best Customer Support looking smile as the clearly angry man turns to look at you. You seem to pass muster, and he relaxes a little.

"No, but I may be interested. Tell me more" he grumbles. "Women"

The last word, you'd say, slipped right out of him. With the corner of the eye, you keep good track of Leo and the woman's movements, though the crowd of people around isn't making it easy.

Roll Manipulate (Charm) to try to convince him you're legit, or Act under Pressure (Cool) to spin a really good, convincing lie. Alternatively, try to word your way in.

Ray slips into customer service mode smooth as silk; real emotions were weird and hard, but fake ones? Ray had rolled enough D20s in his life to be pretty good at fake ones.

"Really? You're not..." Ray quickly yanks out his phone and unlocks it, pretending to swipe downward through a list. "... user bigbeefy420 at hotmail dot com? Registered nine months ago? That's weird, I'm going to have to check this in with our team supervisor."

Ray stuffs his phone back into his pocket and continues on quickly, purposefully not giving the man any time to respond. "Oh well, doesn't really matter I guess - kinda looks like you might be in the market for our services anyway," he says, head tilting back to indicate the direction of Sally and Leo. "Seemed like quite the spat... mind if I ask what happened?"

"It was REAL" Chris grumbles at his grandma, before getting to the task of deciphering all you wrote, his index finger running along the lines. Yuko also reads the note over his head, and looks apologetic.

"His grandpa said it was probably the lightning, and a big bush or something, but we don't know what he saw" she explains. "We don't like him running all around alone, but, well, you see..."

"Oh" the kid interrupts her, his reading concluded. "I dunno. In the forest? There is this really cool tree with all the sparrows' nests, and it's so big. You can see the river from it. I bet you couldn't climb it. I can"

He smiles at you, as if daring you to write anything else. When you don't, he continues.

"It was like monday but not this monday and it was all dark and there was a light like a light bug all down there by the ground, and it disappeared, and it was very dark and then there was a noise and it was loud and then this ghost all big and it was as big as the tree and it had blood all over and I saw its face and he was SKELETON" he puts emphasis in the word, as if he's telling a horror story by a campfire. "And then it disappeared"

His story apparently satisfactorily concluded, he turns to his grandma. "Nan can I go out?"

"Have you done your homework?" she responds, almost mechanically.

"No, but" he starts, before being dexterily interrupted.

"No more forest until you do" Yuko says, firmly, to Chris' huffing. "You can go see your friend later" She gets up and signals towards you to follow her to the door. "Thanks for entertaining Chris. He is a bit lonely, but he is a good kid"

If there are more questions or rolls, go ahead. If not, you'll get outside, to where Neko and Hendrick are.

Absorbing the somewhat vague information, Simon makes a mental note of it and shoots a friendly smile at the boy as Yuko herds Simon away. Doesn't seem like he has friends, except for a nekomata, eh? he wonders as he approaches the door. Thank you for your hospitality, he gestures. Miu, who's been enjoying a comfy nap while Simon wasn't jumping around too much, voices a quiet peep of agreement.

The man grumbles again and eyeballs you, but he doesn't seem to suspect a thing.

"Yesterday she told me we were going for a walk downhill to the river to see the sunset" he finally spits out. "Waited like a dumbass by the hotel bridge for more than an hour. In the cold, and hauling all the food and drink. And she never appeared. Not a call. Nothing"

He sounds slightly dejected now. ""I was jogging and got a bit muddy" I mean, right? Can't call or anything? No, she just left me there. And she was seeing other guys too? Sucks, man."

The man in front of you definitely seems like the gullible type, but he looks like he appreciates your masculine solidarity all the same.

"Oh, we were gym buddies. You know how it is" he says, apparently missing the signs that you don't, in fact, know how it is. "Share a shake, help with a machine, take a walk afterwards. She's new in town, so you show her around..."

Ray nods, listening intently. He did not know what it was like, but he'd played enough visual novels to give him what he thought was a solid grasp on the concept. He was also starting to come to the conclusion that pursuing this conversation any further might result in a dead end.

"Yeah, shame we don't all have access to save states, am I right?" he jokes, certain the man will get the reference because of course everyone has played a VN before. Duh.

"You said she's new in town? I was feeling like she was a long-time local type, just based off the vibes...."

"So what's the deal with you and the guy? Seemed like you two were having an intense conversation, what was he upset about?"

Leo notices the not quite friendly look he's getting and the attempts to lead him away. "Is there something in particular you think we need to know about privately?" It's tempting if it will help solve the murder so he tries to get a better idea of what Sally's intentions are.

To the home question, she looks straight at you. "You seem to have a lot of questions about me. I was thinking we could get a bit more... confortable. Introduce yourself, and all of that"
