There was a True Blood billboard I saw here that had a hand holding a stake which looked exactly like an erect penis till you got pretty close.
Not sure if there's any pictures out there but it was amazing to see such an innuendo in broad daylight.

edit:
Here it is.

Maybe not as close to exactly looking like a boner as I remember.

It does look like a dildo, so it's still fairly phallic.

This is incredible - tells you everything about the themes and style of the movie without making some stupid reference to a scene that you'd only get if you'd seen the movie.

Yeah, I agree. A lot of posters and covers in this thread are just clever for the sake of being clever, but this actually tells you a lot about the movie in a visually interesting way.

To be honest I can appreciate both. From a purely "putting asses in seats" perspective, yeah, the in-reference posters and ads are pretty poor. But once you have seen the films, some of those "clever" ones, like the first American Psycho billboard, are just awesome.

There are a lot of minimalist posters that rightly catch flak for just being plain bad, for instance, but some (the ones done by professionals and not pretentious fans) are great. Criticizing a poster for doing a bad job as a marketing tool is legitimate, but it's still fair to appreciate ones that fail at that but are still awesome in general.

I posted a few of my favorite examples of this in the thread a few months ago:

Robert Denby posted:

"Armageddon":

I know this is a small and crappy image, but that poster was gigantic and supposed to be draped over the middle of a building to give the illusion that there was a massive hole in said building. It caused car crashes since people were distracted by it, and was quickly withdrawn.

I couldn't find the ones that for the American "Godzilla" that were everywhere when the movie was about to come out: They all said stuff like 'HIS FOOT IS AS LONG AS THIS BUS!' and 'HE'S AS TALL AS THIS BUILDING!'. "Fight Club" was going to use a variant as part of the vandalism shown in the movie where a building ad would say 'HIS PENIS IS AS TALL AS THIS BUILDING!' but for obvious reasons it never got used.

The fact that they used that song as a tagline makes me not care. I don't give a drat if the movie sucks, my rear end will be in a seat on opening day.

Fight Club in general had a pretty great ad campaign. One of my favorite things were the PSAs that were shown in theaters before movies.

In regards to the first post and the hills have eyes 2 posters:

The reason the second poster made it through the mpaa was because the person could be dead. The first poster has the person clinging to the sand and this shows life. I don't like it but that's how they work.

I worked on a film about 5 years ago that was a torture porn film and had someone being skinned alive during the intro (lulz). The person was medicated so there was no reaction to this but during the final moments of the scene the person gasps for air.

Because of this 1 shot of the person gasping for air after being skinned the film got tagged nc-17 for violence. We went in and removed this shot of breathing (still left the skinning alive mind you) and did a couple other tweaks and got our R rating.

From the dotted thing it's probably by the same illustrator as this, which I guess was preferred.

Which makes the movie look like it's about aliens.

I can't remember if I got it here or from reddit, but it's from a series of Saul Bass's poster concepts for The Shining.

That'd look bitchin' on an eight year-old's wall but it really doesn't quite convey the tone of the movie quite like the original does. That sleek corporate logo promising adventure, it's pretty much perfect.
