necrobobsledder posted:Overwatch flank to pin one or more enemies you can't get while you take out others with the rest of your squad. The hard part here is not triggering even more enemies in the process of flanking. I've been trying to abuse that more but sometimes it just doesn't seem to work. Is there some detail I'm missing? Like the "flanker" and "watcher" have to be different squad members? The AI has to see more than one target? And nothing seems to matter when the little bastards will still take long range shots at full cover squaddies and one-shot them. I think I'm going to try that Implassic mod for a step-up. Teleport bug still works with that beta patch for me. Got it on the first loving map of a new game, too

I had that happen to me on my ironman run. Only there weren't any mutons. Just two sectopods and a cyberdisc that decided they wanted to come out and play at once. Along with a squad of floaters. I was never so glad that I decided rocket launchers were the biggest priority in terms of survival on ironman than I was during that encounter. Having two heavies literally saved my squad. ... most of them, anyway.

I was on the battle ship, and had just move from the initial staging area, so my whole squad had it's back to it, and a two mutons and a berserker appeared in that spot! There was no way they could have moved there. Oh well, I try to deal with it as best I can with a squad of floaters in front of me. I throw a grenade to blow up their cover, it detonates, they both do their intimidate move and then the UI disappears and it kinda stays like that, with my turn not continuing. First time I've had that one.

In addition, that alien can not have a flanking/exposed shot on any of your guys. If you manage those two things (easiest by tossing a grenade to blow up cover, and then overwatching), you can just sit there for as many turns as you want, and it will do absolutely nothing.

I think I'm absolutely terrible at this game. I just got to the first terror mission, and had to deploy a single low-ranked support and three rookies (with nobody in the fifth slot) because literally everyone else was injured from something or another. Several countries were at 4 or 5 panic bars (none of which were on the continent I got the terror mission at, of course) despite my having launched five satellites already, I was constantly at next to no money, I never had any idea what to research, and my team got slaughtered by the blade bug things introduced in the terror mission. I restarted after doing the tutorial so I could get a less idiotic base placement and not get several of my guys killed for nothing, and I'd been prioritizing satellites, but apparently that wasn't enough? I'm playing on normal.

Research what you want, really, but it's good to get laser weapons imo. Two things I wish I'd known back then: Countries only leave at the end of the month, so save your satellites until just before the council report and launch them to anyone on 5 panic, or prioritise money/continent bonuses. Only use half-cover if there's literally no full-cover available.

Aliens you're trapping like this will totally shoot at anyone without cover bonuses.

Anyone have some general tips for finishing the final mission? I keep getting pasted, probably because of the wrong squad composition (2 assaults, 2 snipers, a heavy and a support) but I don't have a save I can roll back to and change it I usually make it to the final room with my guys at 1/2 health or so, but get absolutely wrecked once the etherals start mind-controlling all of my guys.

Hope you put ghost armor on at least 1 guy. Ghost him in there so he can play spotter for your squad-site snipers to pick things off from a distance. (you did take squad-site for both, right?)

The upgraded launcher is pretty nice for that as well, as the Ethreals can't reflect explosion.

SHIVs? I've never had a problem with them. My ironman impossible white whale continues. Decided to skip Slingshot and instead got the overpass council mission. I should've just turned it down. Maybe if I didn't play with randomized everything it'd be easier, but it's a lot more interesting to me when I can't predict funding or stats.

Well, that's fun. I/I, blew through the first mission no problem. Second abduction mission is the flooded street, and so far, at least one group of sectoids was activated without the little human eyes are on me! cutscene. So, I move from the starting position, see no aliens, overwatch everyone, then move on my second turn. First guy to move gets cut down by overwatch shots from nowhere. Goddamnit. edit: next mission had it too. Is this going to be a thing for the rest of the playthrough? Ravenfood fucked around with this message at 17:28 on Mar 11, 2013 |

After two death spiral games where I failed to get a UFO in before 20 days to the first Council report, I'm beginning to wonder if the beta tweaked that a bit to make the ton-of-satellites-in-month-one strategy less of a surefire cash cow. I'd be fine if it were, since no strategy in XCOM should be foolproof. I'm wondering if anyone else in the open beta has that problem.

Do you have enough troops with enough hitpoints to be able to survive a single round of combat? Combine any of the last three questions with the first one. A little tip that is not immediately clear that should probably change your strategy: Once you kill the special ethereal, you win. Ignore everything else. My snipers don't have squad sight, my only guy in ghost armor is a sniper (the other sniper is the volunteer wearing psionic armor), they both have the scanners, and assuming they don't get mind-controlled the two assaults can tank for quite awhile. Everyone else is in titan armor, the heavy doesn't have shredder rockets, and only 1 dude (an assault) is packing grenades.
