I actually liked it. I don't think she should have to look less feminine (or more masculine) to be strong as heck, and the lips are a good hint. It's not like she was wearing a bunch of makeup, if any, and her lips weren't outrageously colored.

It just looks odd on her, it's got nothing to do with strength. It makes more sense on someone like Christa anyway.

In the same scene in the manga, she had deadened, empty eyes, as though all joy had been sucked from them.

In the anime, however, she had lively, sparkling eyes, as though she were in an upbeat shounen series instead of where she actually was.

Pretty sure the anime's not using the flattened, mono-color eyes to indicate emptiness for others, either. I'd say it gets a pass. The real test for how well that stylistic choice works with out hasn't happened yet IMO.

And even so it's such a minor complaint, since the anime looks well-executed. Since they now have motion and audio to work with, they can convey character traits somewhat less straightforwardly visually. I think they get the point across with the way she carries herself.

Please stop arguing about my anime wife. None of you can possibly understand what she has been through, what she is still going through. My anime wife is flawless, her lips are pink and her eyes sparkle because she is a queen; the queen of my heart.

Her manga era eyes were just a phase. This is who she is now. Please respect her wishes and respect her as she changes on this journey through life and anime.

It's just one light reflection, I wouldn't really call that lively and sparkling. Both the manga and the anime examples fit their respective art styles, they're both pretty distinct. Still, out of curiousity, let's remove the reflections.

I don't know about you, but I think this looks a bit out of place.

Mikasa looks older, though I'm not sure if it's the eyes, lips, or shape of the face. She's only meant to be twelve or thirteen and seems a good few years older. The anime seems to be going for more cheerful and funny moments whenever it can (hardly ever) with this, the OP and Sasha's dinner.

On the other hand I'm liking pretty much everything else, especially slowing things down in episode 2 and giving the armoured titan his, er, due. I felt that sequence was skipped over a little compared to the skinless one kicking the first wall in, which was rather less monstrous in terms of its effects.

The potato scene was pretty great though. I feel like for a minute there the drill sergeant went from being impressed with her to kinda touched. Of course he immediately made him run a bunch of laps but still.

I always read that scene as the drill sergeant thinking "How can this girl be so god drat stupid?"

Given that they explicitly had her standing towards the sun and even drew the rays in her face, I think the gleam makes sense, you can see it on her hair and everyone else's too. I think the black on black eye color is enough to convey that dead look in her eyes. Also she's not smiling (she has no reason to, really), though I do think the glossy lips were out of place.

That is a little worrisome. I thought this was being done by Production I.G., and they are a fairly large studio. I would think that for a show this big they would have had all the staffing and stuff in place for the full 25 episodes.

I never read the manga, but I saw it as her life being so food-oriented (and her being so dumb) that she thought, "heh, I gave this guy some of my food, that ought to get him off my back so I can finish my potato. Now please leave while I continue to stuff my face, please???"
