You'd think that someone with a master's degree in history would have some mixed feelings about capitalism, being in student loan debt and probably willing to sell his soul for a $35k/yr assistant professorship.

Blank is actually a pro-socialism guy, I tried to match the colors up in social fixer since SF doesn't catch when someone just says a first name. Though looking at it, he never actually makes an explicitly pro-socialism argument, except in a kind of roundabout way at the end there.

Edit: Oh goddd okay I admit it, I'm the purple guy, blank, with the History degree, I'm so so sorry for the deception :ohdear:

UK House of Parliament debate on the potential of an invasion of Syria? A difficult global political situation in which any mis-step will result in thousands of deaths (and even the 'best answer' will still result in suffering)? Time for some bravado and facebook stupidity.

Key points:
- Government doesn't need a vote to go to war - the queen can rubber stamp it.
- We don't want politicians deciding who to invade. We need autonomous agents doing it instead.
- Snipers rule.

FEED ME SNAKES
This one's about a woman that was the secretary (she'd press the "administrative assistant" title on us quite a bit) at my workplace. She's a military wife with very little education and an obsession with the "urban" lifestyle, to put it bluntly. She has a massive tendency to air every bit of dirty laundry about the relationship she has with her husband, and constantly throws different flavored macros up depending on how her relationship is going each day. It's fascinating, yet irritating. Here's a taste.

She's one of those people that likes to change her relationship status quite often.

When things aren't going well, she throws up the classiest of macros.

This one cracks me up, considering the content of the macro.

...and sometimes she slips into gangsta mode for some reason. She's extremely white, married to a normal white E-6 in the Army. The entire family screams white.

It gets so bad I feel compelled to call her on it.

Now, I know there are plenty of people out there that were brought up with very little understanding of the English language, and where it's normal for them to speak in broken English like that. I know that it's a symptom of a societal issue. What I can't understand is why someone would want to emulate ignorance. I'm probably coming off as some kind of rear end in a top hat for posting this mess, but I found it fitting to the thread's purpose. Apologies if I offended anyone.

The first one is true, she vetoed the bill that would've taken the power to declare from her and given it to parliament.

I think this is one of those weird distinction things. Like in principle government can't form without royal ascent, but if the Queen actually stopped the party who can form government from doing so, she'd be out on her arse.

We might need the Royal OK to go to war, but the PM can't just skip parliamentary approval.

Are you people serious?

The Queen has a purely ceremonial role. The queen "invites" the party that won the election to form a goverment, and "signs off on" decisions like going to war. This is a matter of protocol, not of her actual involvement. Think of the Queen as a ceremonial hat: when you become Prime Minister, you put on the Hat. This does not imply that anyone actually gives a poo poo what the hat thinks. If you lost the hat, you would probably manage to struggle on regardless.

Bullshit, pay more attention to the news.

quote:

The new laws that were required to receive the seal of approval from the Queen or Prince Charles cover issues from higher education and paternity pay to identity cards and child maintenance.

In one instance the Queen completely vetoed the Military Actions Against Iraq Bill in 1999, a private member's bill that sought to transfer the power to authorise military strikes against Iraq from the monarch to parliament.

She was even asked to consent to the Civil Partnership Act 2004 because it contained a declaration about the validity of a civil partnership that would bind her.

In the pamphlet, the Parliamentary Counsel warns civil servants that if consent is not forthcoming there is a risk "a major plank of the bill must be removed".

"This is opening the eyes of those who believe the Queen only has a ceremonial role," said Andrew George, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, which includes land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales' hereditary estate.

"It shows the royals are playing an active role in the democratic process and we need greater transparency in parliament so we can be fully appraised of whether these powers of influence and veto are really appropriate. At any stage this issue could come up and surprise us and we could find parliament is less powerful than we thought it was."
