They did give you Houndour in Platinum, which is like the first time it's been available before the E4. So that's cool. Fire types are pretty rare, I think, so 3 or 4 families (plus starters) is ok for a game. But yeah, D/P was pretty awful to fire type enthusiasts.

Darmanitan was fun, but Chandelure is my favorite fire type. (Favorite ghost type too.)

The one lesson Gamefreak learned and actually did not forget the immediate next game: variety is GOOD. Giving me lots of options also gives the game extreme replayability, I can just play again and use whatever other gimmicky team I could think of! B2W2 is great entirely because of that, so many choices. Of course, I'm expecting Chorocojo to once again show me the weirder, less used choices, since those seem to be his style (seriously, a Mawile before XY? Maractus? You are great, man).

Blaze Dragon posted:No, it's definitely not okay. You know what B2W2 did well, and why I'll defend this game to the bitter end despite the insanely lovely attempt at a plot and annoying rival? It was the first game in the history of Pokemon (five generations!) to allow me to do a full Fire run, something I'm pretty sure it's possible in XY too. Having 3-4 fire types to choose from if I don't want the starter is generally enough. It's perfectly "OK". Is more better? Yes. That doesn't mean 3-4 is bad.

I really like the design of Roxie's gym. It's very simple but has good atmosphere, and just seems like what some punk rock band would throw together. No cannons or indoor swimming pools or haunted houses, just a cool little thing with a neat track. Also Roxie's bass guitar is a Scolipede. I always thought that was a neat little touch.

It goes back to my point that B2/W2 gets that bullshit gimmicky puzzles are not what we play Pokemon for. That's not to say they aren't excluded, but only when it fits with the Gym Leader. Sadly, this is yet another thing that X/Y forgets...along with the Gym-remixes

Rude Semprini posted:Good reminder. Guess there were some if you were actually interested in them. I think I forgot them because I would only play through with a fire type if it was Litwick or Darumaka. Awesome pokemon, they are. They had to do the same thing for the Ice and Electric gyms at first. Which was really stupid because they didn't even get to use pokemon of the type that had gotten new evolutions in the game because Gamefreak had some really strange ideas about what should or should not be available before the elite four in that gen. If you don't have enough pokemon of the type to make a full team, don't go making visible specialists when you have other options. Especially when you have a type that's never gotten a gym (poor, poor Dark types).

In gen 1 Flareon had a special stat of 110, giving it a very hard hitting Fire Blast. Add that to it's monstrous Attack stat and some good normal type attacks, and it wasn't that bad. Of course, then the special split happened.

Magmar is great and I won't hear anything else, really. This is definitely not a statement borne from the cognitive dissonance of wanting an electabuzz but having Blue version.
